Description

Dec. 21, 1954 c.'w. CHENEY SLIDABLE BOLT FASTENING Filed NOV. 27. 1951 In v'entor.- 0mm M11/M Kfm/ff Attorneys Unite States Patent O SLIDABLE BOLT FASTENING Charles William Cheney, Hockley, Birmingham, England Application November 27, 1951, Serial No. 258,350
Claims priority, application Great Britain February 9, 1951 3 Claims. (Cl. 292-173) The invention relates to fastenings of the kind used on attach and suitcases and comprising a bolt-member slidable within a fiat form of casing by hand and by spring and with which co-operates a hasp member having a loop to be engaged by the nose of the bolt.
The invention provides an improved construction of bolt-member providing a combination of parts distinguished by a knob fixed on the front of the casing and by a swingable two-armed lever pivoted within a front opening of the fixed knob for hand operation to retract the bolt against spring loading projecting the bolt and also swinging the lever automatically in one direction.
rThe hinged lever is pivoted to the knob to swing outwardly on the fixed knob by hand operation in one form of the invention and to swing inwardly on the fixed knob by hand operation in another form of the invention, as will be hereinafter clearly set forth.
By the accompanying drawings the two forms aforesaid of the bolt-member invention are illustrated.
Fig. l is a plan of one form of bolt-member.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the other form of bolt-member.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 3.
With reference to Figs. l and 2 the fiat casing of the bolt-member is provided by the rigidly connected front plate 1 and back plate 2, the bolt 3 having a nose 3a adapted for hasp-loop engagement and being arranged slially guided in a space between the two plates 1 an A knob 4 is fixed to the outer face of the front plate 1 by clinching lugs indicated at 5. Pivoted within an opening of the otherwise closed front wall of this knob by a cross pivoting pin 6 on the knob 4 is a two-armed swingable lever '7 one arm engaging permanently a slot 8 in the bolt 3 and the other arm adapted for finger operation at 9 in direction of the arrow 10 against a tortional spring il mounted loosely upon the pivoting pin 6 of the lever and pressing by its arms 12 and 13 respectively against the lever 7 and against the knob 4. The tortional spring ll is adapted to shoot the bolt 3 into operative position and the hand operation of lever 7 outwardly by a forward swing in the direction of the arrow lll is adapted to retract the bolt 3 against operation of said spring 1l.
in Figs. 3 and 4 the pivoted lever 7 operates 0n the bolt 3 by hand pressure of it inwardly for a rearward swing (as indicated by arrow 14) instead of by forward swing as in Figs. l and 2. A separate bolt spring 15 operates within the casing between a fixed stud 16 of the back plate and an abutment ledge 17 at the bolt rice nose 3a and this spring 15 serves also as the spring for the lever byreason of the inner arm 18 of the lever 7 engaging permanently a slot 19 in the bolt 3 and freely through an opening in the front plate. In this form of the invention the knob 4 is fixed to the casing by clinchings 5 and the lever 7 is pivoted upon a pivoting pin 6 of said knob. The casing is provided by the front plate 1 and back plate 2 as in Figs. l and 2 and the bolt 3 is very similar to the one in Figs. l and 2. In both forms the lever 7 closes the opening in the front wall of the knob 4.
I claim:
l. A slidable bolt fastening of the kind described, comprising a front plate and a back plate rigidly connected by clinchings to provide a casing of flat and elongated form and having through it an opening adapted to receive a co-operative hasp loop, a bolt having a nose and slidable Within the casing with its nose normally crossing the opening in the casing, a knob-like member clinched to the face of the casing and having an opening in its otherwise closed front wall, a two armed lever pivoted on a fixed pin mounted in the knob-like member adjacent to the said opening in the knob like member with its inner arm in operative engagement within an opening in the bolt, and its outer arm extending from the said opening in the knob-like member for finger operation to retract the bolt and spring means mounted between the lever and the casing to normally project the bolt nose across the opening in the casing and to swing the lever into its normal position.
2. A slidable bolt fastening according to claim l and in which the lever is arranged to retract the bolt by an outward movement of its outer arm against said spring mounted between the lever and the casing.
3. A slidable bolt fastening of the kind described, comprising a front plate and a back plate rigidly connected by clincliings to provide a casing of fiat and elongated form and having through it an opening adapted to receive a co-operative hasp loop, a bolt, having a nose, sl idable within the casing with its nose normally crossing the opening in the casing, a knob-like member clinched to the face of the casing and having an opening in its otherwise closed front wall, a two armed lever pivoted on a fixed pin mounted in the knob-like member adjacent to the said opening in the knob-like member With its inner arm in operative engagement with an opening in the bolt and its outer arm extending from the said opening in the knob-like member for finger operation to retract the bolt, and spring means mounted between the bolt and a fixture in the casing to project the bolt nose across the opening in the casing and to swing the lever into its normal position.
