W58 INVENTOI? EINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIGMUND EDINGEI}, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR WASHING A COMBINED URINAL AND PRlVY-QOVtR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 269,648, dated December 26, 1882,
Application tiled September To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND EDINGER, of
New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinveuted certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for \Vashing a Combined Urinal and Privy-Cover; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to makeand use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin water-closet attachments, and more particularly to devices adapted tointroduce waterinto a combined urinal and privy-cover for the purpose of washing the same, the object of the invention being to .provide devices of this character which shall combine simplicityand cheapness of construction with durability and eficiency in use With these objects in view, my invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure .1 is a plan view of a combined urinal and privycover embodying my invention, the auxiliary cover being elevated. Fig.2 is a view in vertical cross-section thereof, the auxiliary cover being represented in its closed adjustment. Fig. 3 is a view in section through the waterpipe connections; and Fig. at is a detached view of the auxiliary cover, showing its shield and a modified arrangement of flushing-pipes, as will be hereinafter referred to.
The combined privy-cover and urinal is composed of a frame, A, inclosing a pan, B, the bottom of which has arearward inclination. The said pan is preferably formed of sheet metal; but wood or other material may be employed in lieu thereof, and, ifdesired, the frame A may be dispensed with and a pan provided with a stiff flange be made to subserve all the functions of a urinal and cover. A pipe, G, leading into the most depressed part of the pan, is designed to conduct the matters voided. thereinto to the closet D, or to other conduit of escape. The pan itself is concealed and closedby an auxiliary cover, E, hinged to the rear section of the frame A. A shield, F, secured to the inner face of the auxiliary cover, is designed to protect the same, and to facilitate the deflection of the liquid into the pan,
the top and sides of the shield being slightly bent inwardly to assist it in the performance of this last-named function. A pipe, G, rising above the top of the closet D, and located in line with the hinges H, which secure the combined cover and urinal thereto, is designed to supply the water for washing the urinal, the water being conveyed to the same through the pipe I, which is movably connected with the pipe G by means of the collar J. The ends of the pipes G and I are closed, and respectively provided with perforations K and L, arranged to register when the combined urinal and cover is in its closed adjustment. The pipe I enters the frame A at a point a little in front of the rear section thereof, and extends along the sides and front of the pan B. It is provided with numerous perforations M, arranged to spray water over the pan, and also with perforations N, having an upward inclination, and hence adapted to deflect fine streams of water onto the shield F of the auxiliary cover E, which should always be closed when the combined urinal and cover is resting upon the closet D, this being the position in which the perforations K and L register to allow the water to flow from the'pipe G into the pipe I.
Inasmuch as it is not designed to continuously introduce water into the combined urinal and privy-cover when the same is in its closed adjustment, devices are employed to let on and shut off the water-supply through the pipe G. The ordinary cut-off for the closet may be utilized for this purpose; but a stopcock, G, or other suitable devices, may be employed, if desired.
Instead of washing or flushing the urinal and shield by the means above described, the perforated supply-pipe could be secured to the auxiliary cover on the sides and top of the shield, and by this means wash the shield and urinal at the same time; or, if desired, another jointed pipe can be secured to the shield in the manner above described, and act in conjunction with the perforated pipe secured to the urinal.
While my improvement is especially adapted to fulfill the twofold function of a urinal and privy-cover, it is apparent that it may be arranged to be used as a urinal alone without any essential changes in construction.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but that I consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as may fairly be considered to fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination, with acombined urinal and privy-cover consisting of a pan and an auxiliary cover, of devices to introduce water thereinto for the purpose of washing the same, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a combined urinal and privy-cover consisting of a pan and an auxiliary cover, of devices to spray water into said pan and onto the inner face ofits auxiliary cover, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a combined urinal and privy-cover, the same being attached to the seat of a closet, of a water-pipe and a pipe movably connected with the pipe aforesaid,
and extending into the urinal and privy-cover, the portions of the pipe located therein being perforated.
4. The combinatiomwith a combined urinal and privy-cover, the same being attached to the seat of a closet, of a closet water-pipe extending above said closet-seat, the end of the pipe being provided with a perforatimi, and a pipe secured to and extending into the urinal and privy-cover, the outer end of the pipe being movably connected with the pipe aforesaid, and provided with a perforation to register with the perforation thereof.
In testimony whereot'l have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
