simple and handy device for the use of needle women to be attached to the clothing or about the person of the user, and adapted to hold sewirig-implements, and to receive and support thread, silk, or yarn, whether in the form of balls or upon spools in such manner that the desired quantity may be drawn ott' as required for work.

It consists of a light frame having a fastening-pin or means for attaching the device to the person, and formed or provided with a reel or spool-holder from which the thread can be drawn oil, a socket to hold a thimble, and a cushion or receptacle for pins and needles.

It consists also in the combination, with the spool-holder, of a detachable cage or receptacle to hold and confine a ball of thread or yarn, by which the device may be made to receive and hold in a position for convenient use either a spool or a ball of material.

The device consists of a light wire frame formed by bending a length of wire, A, around a mandrel, so as to form in the center portion a spring-coil, l), and then by bending down the two ends of the wire toward each other to form the two jaws A A. The end portions, a a, of these parts being bent into a rectangular shape, the ends are carried in toward each other to be substantially in line together when the jaws A A are allowed to close. This loweror end portion of the frame thus constitutes a reel and holder for a spool.

In connection with the spool-holderI provide a cage, F, to contain and hold a ball of thread or yarn, so that the device is of service both where the thread or other material used is supplied on spools, and where it is in the form of balls. This cage F is made of two parts or halves, so that it is readily opened and separated to admit the ball. It is attached and secured to the jaws A, and in the rectangular frame or reel by means of small clips or springjaws g g, which engage with the wires a a, and by loops or eyes h h, through which the ends of the spool-holder are passed when the cage is fixed in place.

The two parts of thecage are formed in a very simple manner by securing curved wires ff in a radial position across a circular rim or ring, 2', as shown in Fig.3of the drawings, the two rings, when closed together, forming a spherical cage. A hinge or link,j, connecting the two rings together at the top, serves to pre vent the parts being separated and lost when they are removed from the frame, and a locking-catch can be employed to keep the two halves shut together, if it be necessary.

In using my device the spool of material is placed in the reel by spreading apart the jaws A A and inserting the ends of the wires in the apertures in the head of the spool, and then allowing the jaws to spring together. Theend of the thread is then carried up and passed through the eye at the top of the frame formed by the spring I), and the device is attached to the breast of theuser by means of the fastening-pin. If a ball of thread, yarn, or crochetcotton is to be held, thejaws are spread apart as before, and the cage F is fixed in place, onehalf on each side,and the ball being then putin place the cage is closed together around it, and retained in this position by the action of the spring, or by a catch, it one is provided.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
