ANDREW WALKER, JR., OF UNITY, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
STOVE FOR COOKING, HEATING, AND ILLUMINATING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,695, dated June 27, 1842.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW WALKER, Jr., of Unity, in the county of Sullivan and State, of New Hampshire, mechanic, have invented a new and useful stove, called lValkers Gas-Stove, for the purpose of cooking or warming a building and generating gas by the same fire, of which the following is a true, full, and exact description.
In the annexed drawings of my stove, a, as represented in Figure 1, is the door for introducing the fuel into the stove.
b, b, are the smoke fines.
c, is the oven case. (Z, is the gas pipe to conduct the gas ofi to the purifier 3 and gas reservoir 4 which may be placed in the same apartment with the stove, or in another apartment as may be most convenient.
In Fig. 5, 9, represents the oven; 6, 25', the space above and under the oven for the circulation of hot air for heating the oven, a similar space being left in front and rear between the oven and the oven case for the same purpose. It is represented in Fig. 4, by a, 1:, t.
In Fig. 2, e, c, c, and f, f, represent the boiler holes for cooking vessels. Those represented by e, e, 6, being placed partly over the gas retort, and those represented by f, f, being directly over the fire.
In Figs. 4 and 5, j, y, j, y', represent the gas retort, and i, the cover or stopper which is fitted to the opening at the end of the retort by a screw form, and is unscrewed and taken out to introduce into the retort the wood or other materials from which the gas is to be generated.
The apparatus is so constructed that the same heat which is used for cooking and for warming the apartment also serves the purpose of generating the gas to be used in lighting the apartment, or for any other purposes. When the apparatus is used merely for cooking and not for generating gas, the fire does not pass around the retort. The damper 7c, 70, in Fig. 3, is drawn out by its handle u, so that smoke and heated air pass off over the gas retort to the fines b, b, and so to the oven 5/, as in Figs. 4 and 5. When gas is to be generated that damper is closed, the same as now represented in Fig. 3, thus closing the hole which is through the plate L, L, L, which closes the opening between the top of the retort and the top plate of the stove, T, T, in Fig. 2. The damper 70, 7c, slides in a groove which is attached to the plate L, L, L, and is represented clearly in the drawing, Fig. 8, and the smoke and heated air passes down between the plate at the back of the fire andthe retort. It passes in, at the openings 1", 0*, represented in Fig. 6, and when it. passes in, at r r, the space is open around the retort, until you come to the plates 0, 0,0, 0,which lies on top of the retort, and shut the opening between the retort and the back of the stove, and the fire passes around the retort in the space m, m, m, as represented in Fig. 4, and comes. out at the opening 7), p, at the back of the stove, the
damper n, n, being slid inward by itshandle S, leaving the space 70, 2), open as represented in Fig. 6, and the smoke and heated air passes forward around the end of the partition h, h, as represented in Fig. 6, and so to the smoke fiues 7), b, as in Fig. 5, thus heating the retort for the purpose of generating the gas.
I claim as my invention, and ask a patent for The combination of a gas generating apparatus with a stove, in the manner and by the method, structure and arrangement of its parts above described.
In testimony whereof I the said ANDREW IVALKER, Jr., hereunto subscribe my name in presence of witnesses whose names are hereunto subscribed this seventeenth day of June A. D. 1842.
ANDREIV IVALKER, J R.
