UNTTED STATES PATENT O F C RICHARD W. BURT, OF PEDRIA, ILLINOIS.
HORIZONTAL WIND-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming'partof Letters Patent No. 269,511, dated December 26, 1882,
- Application filedoctoberlfi, 1882. (No model.)
To all. whom it may concern Be it known that I, ltlcrma'o W. BURT, of
' Peoria, in the county of Peoria, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Horizontal Wind-Wheel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed-drawings, making apart of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation through :r a, Fig. 2; Fig. .2 represents a sectional plan through y 3/, Fig. 1.
The object ot' my invention is the construction of a governing device for wind-wheels ot' the kind in which a horizontal fan-wheel is surrounded by a wind-directing casing.
My invention consists essentially of the fanwheel Z, having vertical axis A, gearing with a ball-governor, D, which by means of suitable levers closes more or less the screens M L of the case surrounding the fan-wheel.
In the drawings, Z Z represent the radial arms of the wind-wheel, to the extremities of which are secured the V-sha-ped fans Z Z. The vertical 8XlS A ot' the wind-wheel communicates, through the gears O U and the shaft B, a somewhat accelerated motion to the governor-shaft D. The upward pull of the collar E, when caused to rise by the too rapid rotation of the governor, gives through the lever F, pivoted at F, a downward pull to the rods C four in number. To the upper end of each of said rods G is pivoted a rocking brace, H, and a rod, J.
Each of the four sides of my surrounding case consists ot'one-third fixed screen and twothirds (more or less) of a movable screen, M L. Said screen M L consists of top and bottom strips, M M, rigidly fixed to the vertical axis 0, having bearings at top and bottom in the horizontal beams of the case. Between said two strips M M are pivoted three leaves, L L L -L at the point P, and having a small chain or cord attached to its free edge-to prevent its opening too far; L pivoted to a small vertical bar K, which not only joins both strips M M, but extends downward to the rod J, to which it is connected; and L pivoted near its center at P. Said leaf L is kept from turning too far by coming in contact with the small rod or wire W, secured at one end to the vertical beam U of the case andat its other to the axis. An eye, fixed in the edge of said lcaf'L and sliding along said wire or rod W, obliges said leaf to turn when the screen M L is turned, asshown in Fig. 2, and when M L is turned flat with its side of the case the leaf L is caused by said wire W to coincide therewith also. The leaf L is caused to close and is kept from opening too far by the wire or small rod W, fixed at O and U. Said rod W causes the leaf L also to close when the screen M L is closed. The leaves L and L are made wider than the spaces they fill that they may not be able to swing outwardly.
In Fig. 2 the wind is coming from the upper side of the drawing, the screens being all wide open. The leaves L, L, and L of the upper screen will thereforebe wide open, (far as their construction permits,) and also the leaves otthe right-hand screen, the leaves L ot'all the screens being opened'by the wires W, and the leaves Land L of said two screens being opened by the pressure of the wind. The leaves L and L of the left and lower screens, M L, are, however, closed by thcwind. It will now be readily seen thatthe wind, coming between and being directed by the leaves L L L of the upper screen, impinges against the concave sides of the fans Z and causes the wind-wheel Z to rotate in a direction opposite to the hands of a i watch. The leaves of the left-hand screen gather air-current coming in contact therewith, and direct it against the concave sides of the fans Z, thus adding to the force of rotation of the windwheel. The current of wind having done its work of rotating the wheel Z, escapes through the open screens atthe right and lower sides of the case. Now, if the velocity of the wind increases and the windwheel is caused thereby to move with too great rapidity, the governor I), acting through the lever F, rods Gr, rocking braces H, and rods J, attached to the lower extremity of the bars K of the screens M L, closes said screens until the workrequired.
I have described this windwheel asactcd ires \V W, in combination with suitable upon by the air-current coming against the upper side of said mill; but the action of the leaves and screen is practically the same, whatever the direction of the wind.
What I. claim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In enveloping cases for horizontal windwheels, the top and bottom strips, M M, having vertical axis 0, in combination with one ,or more leaves, L, pivoted at- P to said strips M M, and controlled by a small rod, W, fixed to the said axis 0 and to the frame-Work of the case, and the leaf L pivoted at P to said strips MM, and controlledby a small rod, W, fixed to the axis 0 and to the frame-work ot' the case, substantially as set forth.
2. The horizontal strips M M, having approximately-central axis 0, the horizontallyswinging leaves L, L, and L and the rods or frame-Work and the wind-wheel Z, having V-shaped fans Z, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The Wheel Z, having V-shaped fans Z, and the vertical axis A, a partially-enveloping case, and the horizontally swinging approximately centrally pivoted screens M L, in combination with the bevel-gear O and C, shaft B, ball-governor D, lever F, having fulcrum F, rods G, rocking braces H, and rods J, secured to said screens M L, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing inday of October, 1882.
