GARBAGE CAN LID LOCK Filed May 19. 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 JNVENToR cfr/ez. c'. aan er GARBAGE CAN LID LoCK nited States Patent O Carl C. Dayley, Nampa, Idaho, assigner to Container Lock Lid Company, Gates, Greg., a partnership consisting of Carl C. Dayley and Oliver Willis The present invention relates to a garbage can lid lock and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a lock for holding the lid of a garbage can upon the can in such manner that if the same is tipped over, either accidentally or by dogs or the like, the lid will remain in position to prevent the contents of the can from scattering. The lid is provided with a conventional centrally disposed handle adjacent which is positioned a nger piece which is held in a normally upright position but which may be depressed by the thumb of the operator to release a movable plate which is mounted beneath the can top and to which is eccentrically connected a plurality of outwardly extending hooks which engage beneath the lip of the can when the plate is turned in one direction and which moves outwardly to disengage such lip when the plate is moved in the opposite direction.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a garbage can lid having a manually operable lock for attaching the same to a garbage can.
A further object of the invention is the provision of simple means, in a device of the character set forth, for operating a series of locking hooks forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2 2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating certain details of construction,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan View similar to Figure l but showing certain parts thereof advanced to other positions they may assume,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5--5 of Figure 2,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 6--6 of Figure 2,
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 but showing certain parts of the invention advanced to another position they may assume, and
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken along line 8-8 of Figure 7.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a garbage can 10 having a lip 11 at its upper edge. There is also provided a lid 12 having a dependent ange 13 and a centrally disposed raised portion 14.
An upper latch plate is mounted upon the raised portion 14 and has a central raised section 15 and a pair of integrally formed outwardly extending feet 16 and 17 A spacer plate 18 is affixed to the underside of the raised portion 14 of the lid 12 by means of rivets 19 or the like and a lower latch plate 20 is mounted upon the bottom side of the spacer plate 18.
A conventional handle 21 is provided with feet 22 and 23 and a bolt 24 extends through the plate 20 and thence upwardly through an arcuate opening 25 in the spacer plate 18, thence upwardly through an arcuate opening 26 ICC in the lid 12, thence through the feet 17 and 23, the upper end of the bolt 24 being provided with a nut 27.
A block 28 having a downwardly and outwardly sloping top is atixed to the upper side of the foot 22 of the handle 21. A lever having an upwardly extending arm 29 and a horizontally extending arm 30 has the point of juncture of said arms resting upon the top of the block 28.
An elongated bolt 31 extends upwardly through the lower latch plate 20, thence through an arcuate opening 32 in the spacer plate 18, thence through an arcuate opening 33 in the lid 12, thence through the feet 16 and 22, thence through the block 18 and the arm 31, and is provided at its upper end with a nut 34. A compression spring 35 surrounds the bolt 31 and bears against the arm 30 and the nut 34.
The outer end of the arm 30 carries a dependent locking pin 36 which is reciprocally disposed in a series of superposed substantially elliptical openings 37, 38, 39 and 40 which are formed, respectively, in the foot 22, foot 16, lid 12 and spacer plate 18, the longer axes of the openings extending radially with respect to the lid 12.
A bolt 41 extends vertically downwardly through the center of the upper latch plate, thence centrally through the lid 12, the spacer plate 18 and the lower latch plate 20 and is centrally threaded into a dependent latch plate 42 which is in parallel relation to the plate 20 by means of three bolts 43 each provided with a nut 44.
Three elongated outwardly extending hooks 45 are each provided with an eye 46 which encompasses one of the bolts 43 and each of which extends through an opening 47 formed adjacent the outer edge of the lid 12, the openings 47 being equidistantly circumferentially spaced in such lid. A spacing washer 48 surrounds each of the bolts 43 between its associated eye 46 and the plate 20 and a reinforcing strip 49 is aixed by rivets 50 or the like atop the lid 12 over each of the openings 47 and isr each case is itself provided with a registering opening In operation, it will be apparent that the lid 12 may be placed upon the can 10 in conventional manner by iirst grasping the handle 21 with the fingers and pressing downwardly upon the arm 29 with the thumb, which action causes the arm 30 to be raised against the action of the spring 35 to thus lift the locking pin 36 out of the openings 37, 38, 39 and 40, after which the handle 21 may be turned in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Figures l, 6 and 7. This causes the upper locking plate and the lower locking plates 20 and 42 to likewise move in such direction to thus force the hooks 45 outwardly of the lid 12. In such condition the lid 12 may be placed upon or removed from the can 10 in conventional manner.
Having placed the lid 12 upon the can 10 and desiring to lock the same thereon, it is only necessary to turn the handle 21 in a clockwise direction, also as viewed in Figures l, 6 and 7, whereupon the reverse of the action just described will take place, and when the locking pin 36 will drop into the registered openings 37, 38, 39 and 40 again through the action of the spring 35, the hooks 45 meantime having been brought upwardly into engagement with the underside of the lip 11.
It will be seen that whenever the hooks 45 are moved outwardly by the heretofore described action, that the locking pin 36 will rest upon the upper side of the raised portion 14 of the lid 12.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor forms thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A latch mechanism for the lid of a garbage can having an outwardly extending lip, comprising an upper latch plate revolubly mounted atop said lid, a lower latch plate revolubly mounted below said lid, said lid having a pair of arcuate slots therein, a pair of bolts interconnecting said upper and lower plates and each extending through one of said slots, a plurality of circumferentially spaced rods each pivotally and eccentrically connected at its inner end to said lower plate, said lid having a dependent portion, said rods slidably extending through said dependent portion, an inwardly directed hook formed on the outer end of each rod and engageable beneath the lip of said can, a handle axed atop said upper plate, said cover having a substantially elliptical opening therein, a block mounted on said upper plate adjacent one end of said handle, a lever pivotally and yieldably mounted on said block, a locking pin dependently carried by one end of said lever and receivable in said elliptical opening, and an upwardly extending actuating arm formed at the other end of said lever and lying adjacent said handle.
