CAR-COUPLING.
S?ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,354, dated December 19, 1882.
Application filed June 17, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONAI-I J. lumen, of Waveland, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and 1 do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 isa frontelevation of my improved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, of the same.
This invention has relation to an improvement in car-couplings, having for its object to effect the ready adjustment of the link according to the height of the bull-nose or draw-bar of the meeting car, while enabling the easy coupling and uncoupling of the cars; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as herein after more fully set forth and claimed.
in carrying out my invention I employ a draw-bar or bull-nose, A, having a rod, (1, projecting from its rear end and sliding in an apertured cross-bar, a, fastened to two longitudinal parallelbars, a secured to the under side of the car. This rod is provided with a spring, a to permit the draw-bar to yield as it meets the draw-bar of the approaching car, and to return to its normal position after counteracting the momentum of the meeting cars when being coupled together. The draw-bar is supported by a plate or bar,-a, fastened to the bars a near its forward end.
B is a cam-plate disposed directly under the projecting end of the draw-bar A, and having parallel curved arms or bars I) 1) extending rearward. These arms or bars I) I) move in guides c, fixed transverselyto the bars a*, and are limited in their movement by pins or stops 0, inserted through their rear ends. These arms or bars are curved in a vertical planein the arc of a circle, to permit them to have a movement in a like plane.
0 is a bifurcated lever, hungin slots in bars or projections d, projecting from the end of the car, with its lower ends connected to the arms of the cam B, and its upper or handled end capable of being conveniently operated by hand.
It will be noticed that by moving the lever O in one direction the cam or plate B will be caused to move forward and upward past the forward end of the draw-bar and affect the coupling-link so as to elevate or adjust its free end according to the height of the draw-bar ot' the meeting car. Of course this adjustment of the link is only resorted to when the draw-bars are of unequal height.
Dis the coupling-pin, chained or otherwise connected to a horizontal lever, E,and passed into an aperture in the upper side of the draw bar. The lever E is pivoted upon a headed pin, 0, between its head and abracket,e,fastened to the car, and is guided in its movement upon a bar,f, fastened to the opposite side of the car, and to a bracket, f, also fastened to the car.
To the free end'ot' the lever E is connected a rod, 9, passed up through an apertured guide, g, and capable of being conveniently grasped and operated by hand when it is desired to effect the coupling or uncoupling of the cars.
Having thusdescribed my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head A, bifurcated curved spring-plate B, working through guides 0 c, and having stops 0, and bifurcated arm 0, straddling the draw-head and connected at its lower end to the curved spring-plate B, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my own I have hereunto at'fixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JONAH J. VINSON.
