Definitions
- a further object is to provide a frame for a filter bag opening and t 1 which, when moved toward closed position, has first members bowed away from each other and second members bowed toward each other, and clamping means securing the first members together in a straight'line and forcing the second members together in a straight line closed position.
- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a suction cleaner embodying the new filter bag
- Figure 2 is a plan view of the bag opening frame in closed position
- Figure 3 is a side view showing in full lines the position of the frame members in different planes when in closed position, and in dottedlines the position of some of the frame members 'upon movement into the plane of the other members;
- Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the bowed arrangement of theframe members during movement to open and closed positions
- Figure 5 is a top perspecive view of the bag opening frame in open position
- Figure 6 is a section along the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
- a suction cleaner embodying the improved bag 10 comprises a body 11 including a nozzle 12, a housing 13 for an unshown motorfan unit, and a fan chamber exhaust conduit 14.
- the cleaner body is supported on front and rear wheels 15 and 16 respectively, and a handle 17 is pivotally mounted at 18 to the cleaner body 11.
- the lower end of the bag 10 is provided with an inlet 19 detachably secured to the exhaust conduit 14 and the upper end of the bag has a top opening 20 which is closed by a resilient U-shaped clamp 21 and the latter is suspended from the handle 17 by a spring 22.
- the top opening 20 of the bag is formed by a frame having a pair of large members 25 and a pair of smaller members 27.
- Each of the members are of resilient material formed to inherently assume the bowed contour shown in Figure 5.
- the adjacent ends 2'9-29 of the large members 25 are pivotally connected by a hinge 30, the opposite ends 31-31 are secured to the ends 32-32 of the smaller members 27 by hinges 33, and the adjacent ends 34-34 of the small members 27 are pivoted together by a hinge 35.
- the construction of the hinges 33 is clearly shown in Figure 3 and comprises lugs 36 and 37 on the members 25 and 27respectively, and the lugs are arranged at an angle of 45 degrees with these members.
- Each of the lugs 36and 37 is provided with a bore in which is rotatably mounted a pin 38 to pivotally connect the adjacent ends of the members 25 and 27.
- the hinge pins 38 guide the movement of the small members 27 and the hinge for rotation through an angle of 90 degrees relative to the members 25 as shown in full 21mm ree Patented Nov. 2, 1954 and dotted lines in Figure 3, and the path of movement of hinge 35 is shown by the dot and dash line 39.
- the hinge 35 has an elongated opening 40 in one of the members 27 to provide a loose connection for movement of the hinge 35 through the compound angle into and out of the plane of the large members 25.
- the frame is arranged in a hem 41 at the top of the bag, the large members 25 being disposed in a hem portion 42 and the smaller members 27 in a hem portion 43.
- a strip of soft material 44 Arranged along the interior of each of the large members 25 is a strip of soft material 44 which forms a dust-tight joint when the frame members are in closed position.
- the small frame members 27 are disposed downwardly and inwardly of the bag 10 and normal to the large frame members 25.
- the large members 25 are held together in a straight line against their inherent tendency to bow away from each other by sliding the resilient U-shaped clamp 21 on the ends 29 of the members 25 throughout the length of the latter to beyond the hinges 33 as shown in Figure 1.
- the clamp 21 also holds the small members 27 in dust-tight relation by forcing the ends 32 together against their tendency to move away from each ot er.
- the clamp 21 is slidably removed from the large members 25 to release the latter and the small members 27, whereby the members 27 assume their inherent bowed configuration and move their ends 32 about the hinge 35 and the large members 25 about the hinge 30 to the position shown in Figure 4.
- the small members 27 are pivoted about the inclined hinges 33 to move the members 27 into the plane of the large members 25. During such movement of the small members 27, the latter also pivots about the single hinge 35 and the bowed direction of the members 27 relative to each other is reversed from the bowed position shown in Figure 4 to the contour shown in Figure 5.
- the dirt is removed from the bag by placing the expanded frame upon a piece of newspaper and elevating the inlet 19, which has been removed from the exhaust conduit 14, and shaking the bag whereupon the dirt will fall through the opening 20 onto the paper which is disposed of in any suitable manner.
- the hinge 35 is moved inwardly of the frame causing the members 27 to move downwardly and inwardly of the bag 10 by'pivoting about the inclined hinges 33.
- the hinge 35 holds the adjacent ends 34 together.
- the large members 25 are then moved toward each other to permit the clamp 21 to be telescoped about the ends 29, and thereafter the clamp is moved alon the large members to also enclose the hinges 33.
- the clamp 21 has completely telescoped the large members 25, the latter are held together in a straight line and the soft material 44 is compressed to form an air tight seal.
- the clamp 21 also holds the small members back to back in a straight line to form an air tight seal, the hinge 35 securing the ends 34 of the members 27 and the clamp 21 securing the opposite ends 32 against their inherent tendency to bow away from each other.
