The present invention relates to double twist spindles.
The present application is a continuation-in-part of U. S. patent application serial No. 241,850, tiled on August 14, 1951 and entitled Double-Twist Spindles.
In the above referred to application, there is a doubletwist spindle in which a ring-shaped member for guiding the thread is located between two core members which are surrounded by a tubular member. When it is necessary to change the ring-shaped member, because of breakage or wear of the same, for example, it is necessary to disassemble the core members from the tubular member and to reassemble the same with a new ringshaped member. This assembly and disassembly of these parts creates an undesirable inconvenience.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to overcome this inconvenience by providing a construction where the ring-shaped member is removable from the parts supporting the same while these parts remain assembled.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus of the above type with a means for supporting the ring-shaped member in such a way that it may be removed from and inserted into its supporting structure from two different parts thereof.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a means for wedging the above referred to core members and tubular member to each other.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a means for removably supporting a ring-shaped member of the type referred to above, in such a way that no fastening members are required to hold the ringshaped member and no parts other than the ring-shaped member are required to be moved during replacement of the latter.
' With the above objects in view, the present invention mainly consists of a double twist spindle apparatus which includes a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members,
said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member and opening onto the end surface of said end portion thereof; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said rst and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said rst and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be buided through said bore of said rst core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having a cross section smaller than said end portion of said slot so as to be insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a spindle core member 1 which is bored along its axis at 5 and a spindle core member 2 which is provided with two sector shaped cutouts in the end portion thereof #located adjacent to the spindle core member 1. The spindle core members 1 and 2 are spaced from each other fixedly mounted in a tubular member 3 so as to be supported thereby. As is clearly apparent from Figs. 2 and 3, the parts 1, 2, and 3 are conical so that the core members 1 and 2 may be fixed to the tubular support 3 by being tightly wedged thereto. The tubular member 3 is `provided with two slots 7 which are aligned with the eutouts in the upper end portion of the spindle core member 2 (Fig. 4). As is apparent from the drawings, the upper end of portion 18 of slot 7 has an enlarged circular shape and overlaps both the core members 2 and 3 while extending across the space therebetween. Located between the spindle core members 1 and 2 is the ring-shaped member 6 which may be made of steel, which may be chrome plated, or of a ceramic material or of porcelain. This ring-shaped member 6 has a central aperture aligned with bore 5 and overlapping the cutout of spindle core member 2, the end of this aperture located adjacent to core member 1 being smaller than the opposite end of the aperture located adjacent to core member 2, and the aperture being smoothly curved between the ends thereof. The ring-shaped member 6 is provided with a smooth surface at least at the aperture thereof, and the member 6 is of a rectangular shape and of a width smaller than the width of circular end portion 18 of slot 7. As is apparent from Fig. 2, the side edges of the ring-shaped member 6 frictionally engage the tubular support 3 in each of the cutout portions 18 thereof along four lines, and this friction is suicient to hold member 6 in position while permitting the same to be easily removed and replaced simply by being moved to the right or left, as viewed in Fig. 3. It is apparent that no special fastening ing means need be applied or removed during replacement of a member 6, and that the parts 1, 2 and 3 may remain in their assembled relationship during replacement of the member 6.
The tubular support member 3 is mounted on the member 8 which has two or more cut away portions 8a located between parts 8b and 8c of member 8 and aligned with the slots 7 of tubular member 3. As is evident from Fig. l, part 8b of member 8 overlaps member 6 so that the latter cannot ily out through end portion 18 of slot 7 during rotation of the apparatus. Also, if desired, the width of cut away portions 8a may correspond to that of slots 7 to further prevent ying out of ring 6, and in this latter event the member 8 must be completely separated from member 3 and the parts carried thereby to allow ring 6 to be removed and replaced. Mounted above the member 8 is the dish-shaped member 9 which has a hollow central projection in which the ball bearing 11 and the roller bearing 10 are mounted, as shown in the drawing. These bearings interconnect the dish-shaped member 9 with the spindle core member 1, and the ball bearing 11 is mounted directly above the tubular support member 3.
The operation of the structure illustrated in the drawing is believed to be evident. The dish-shaped member 9 is intended to remain substantially stationary and to support the spool of thread to be twisted on the central projection thereof, while the parts 1, 2, 6, and 8 all rotate together. The thread 4, from a spool (not shown) ice Vinounted on the centralprojection of dish-shaped member 9', passes through the bore 5 of spindle core member 1, through the central aperture of ring-shaped member 6, through a cutout of spindle ,core member 2, through a slot' 7 of tubular member, and'through'one-of thencut away portions of the member 8. This latter patlrfforfthe thread to be twisted 'forms a conduit means for the, thread, 'and the smoothly curved aperture ofy ring-shaped inem'- ber 6 provides a smooth surface at the sharp bend inthe conduit means so that a minimum of wear is caused on `the thread to be twisted. Triv other knownl devioeso' this type, the thread must pass over a relatively sharp'corner at the bend in the path through which'it moves, and this sharp corner causes damage and'wear on the thread to=be twisted. These latter defects and disadvantages -areicomf pletely eliminated bythe structure described above,v and in particular by ring-shaped memberv V6.
It will be understood thateach of the elements described above, or two or more together, may, also find a useful application in other types of double twist'spindles differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in double twist spindles having a lremovable device for reducing to a minimum the wear on the thread to be twisted, it is not intendedto be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing `in any Way' from the spirit of the present invention;
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so 'fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt Ait for `various applications without omittingV features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured'- by Letters Patent is: f
1.` In a double twist spindle, in combination, a -first elongated spindle core member formed'with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member `coaxial `with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form ya space between said first and second core members,A said second core member having an end portion located adjacent'said Vfirst core member and formed with atleast one cutout extending into said second core lmember from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a
Vtubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, `said tubular member being formed with at least one slot 4passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger'size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in saidv tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture rof said ring member being aligned with said bore of said rst `core `member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread *may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of-said'second core member and through said slotof said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of Asaid slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot so that said ring member is insertable into and removable yfrom said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot.

In a double twist spindle, in combination, a lfirst eiongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said rst core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said rst and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located ad'- jacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slotpassing through thewally thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout;.and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space betweenV saidfrst and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of Ysaid fus-t core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through .saidbore of said first core 'memben through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said siot'so that said ring member 'is'inseit'ableinto and removable from said space betweeny said core'lmembers through said end portion offsa'id slim-andy said aperture of said ring member having one end, located adjacent said first core member, of a smaller size'than an opposite end of said aperture located adjacent said second-core member, said aperture being smoothly curvedbetween said ends` thereof.

In a double twist spindle, in combination, afiirs't elongated spindle core member formed' with a bore Yextending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated `spindle core member coaxial with said first vcore member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second vcore members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said'v first core member; a tubular support member' embracingvv said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at vleast one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end .portion extending beyond 'said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot so that said ring member is insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot, and said aperture of said ring member having one end, located adjacent said first core member, of a smaller size than an opposite end of said aperture located adjacent said second core member, said aperture being smoothly curved between said ends thereof, and said ring member having a thickness which is smaller than lthe distance between said first and second core members.
5. ln a double twist spindle, in combination, a rst elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member trom the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member,'through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot so that said ring member is inserb able into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slotv and said aperture of said ring member having one end. located adjacent said first core member, of a smaller size than an opposite end of said aperture located ady jacent said second 'core member, said aperture being smoothly curved between said ends thereof, and said ring member having a thickness which is smaller than the distance between said first and second core members, said ring member being made of hard steel.

In a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacert said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said firstl core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same` said tubular member being formed with at least orc slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally ape"n tured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core menbers, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a-thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion or' said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot so that said ring member is insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot, and said aperture of said ring member having one end, located adjacent said rst core member, of a Smaller size than an opposite end of said aperture located adjacent said second core member, said aperture being smoothly curved between said ends thereof, and said ring member having a thickness which is smaller than the distance between said first and second core members, said ring member being made of hard steel and being chrome plated at least at said aperture thereof.

In a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along 'its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said rst core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout', and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot'so that said ring member is insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot, and said aperture of said ring member having one end, located adjacent said first core member, of a smaller size than an opposite end'of said aperture located adjacent said second core member, said aperture being smoothly curved between said ends thereof, and said ring member having a. thickness which is smaller than the distance between said first and second core members, and said ring member being made of porcelain and having a. smooth surface at said aperture thereof.
8. In a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members. said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided. through said boreof said'rst core member, through said apertureof said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and: through said end portion of said slot cross. sections which Vare all smaller than said end portion of said. slot so .that said ring member is insertable into and removable from said space between said core members throughV said Vend portion of said slot, and said aperture of said ring member having one end, located adjacent said first core member, of va smaller size than. an opposite end of said aperture located adjacent said second core member, said aperture being smoothly curved Lbetween said ends thereof, and said ring member having a thickness which is smaller than the distance between said first and second core members, and said ring member being. made of a ceramic material and having a smooth surface at least at said aperture thereof.

In a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core memlber and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second .core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a rotatably mounted tubular support member embracing said rst and second core members and supporting the` same for rotation therewith, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said secondcore member, said slot having an end portion extending beyond said cutout and opposite said space between said first and second core members, and said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular memberI in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ringr member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said aperture ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot so that said ring member is insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot, and said aperture of said ring member having one end, located adjacent said first core member, of a smaller size than an opposite end of said aperture located adjacent said second core member, said aperture being smoothly curved between said ends thereof, and said ring member having a thickness which is smaller than the distance between said first and second core members.

14. ln a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having a circular end portion extending across said space between said core members and overlapping the latter, said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot so that said ring member is insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot.

In a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having a circular end portion extending across said space between said core members and overlapping the latter, said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second'core member so that'a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular support member, said apertured ring member having transverse to a line extending across said ring member and through said end portion of said slot cross sections which are all smaller than said end portion of said slot so that said ring member is insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot and said ring member having an end portion located in said end portion of said slot and engaging said tubular member at said end portion of said slot thereof.
16. in a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having a circular end portion extending across said space between said core members and overlapping the latter, said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said eutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said first core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular supporting member, said ring member being rectangular in shape and having a width smaller than the width of said end portion of said slot so as to be insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portion of said slot.

In a double twist spindle, in combination, a first elongated spindle core member formed with a bore extending therethrough along its axis; a second elongated spindle core member coaxial with said first core member and being located apart from the same to form a space between said first and second core members, said second core member having an end portion located adjacent said first core member and formed with at least one cutout extending into said second core member from the end and side faces thereof adjacent said first core member; a tubular support member embracing said first and second core members and supporting the same, said tubular member being formed with at least one slot passing through the wall thereof and being aligned with said cutout of said second core member, said slot having a circular end portion extending across said space between said core members and overlapping the latter, said end portion of said slot being of a larger size than said cutout; and a centrally apertured ring member mounted in said tubular member in said space between said first and second core members, the aperture of said ring member being aligned with said bore of said rst core member and overlapping said cutout of said second core member so that a thread may be guided through said bore of said first core member, through said aperture of said ring member, through said cutout of said second core member and through said slot of said tubular supporting member, said ring member being rectangular in shape and having a width smaller than the width of said end portion of said slot so as to be insertable into and removable from said space between said core members through said end portionv of said slot and said ring member having an end portion located in said end portion of said slot and engaging said tubular member at said end portion of said slot thereof.
