This invention relates to improvements in mop sticks and more particularly to means in the form of a head secured to one end of the mop stick by means of which a mop may be quickly and conveniently secured to or removed from the mop head.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a mop head which is of simple, eiiicient, durable, lightweight construction and wherein its several parts are automatically reinforced throughout their entire operative range against distortion and displacement of the mop secured to the head.

These and other objects will appear as my invention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring now more particularly to the drawmg:

The invention comprises a bracket generally indicated at i, made in two sections indicated at 2 and 3, and secured together and to a mop stick or handle 5 by means of rivets ii. The lower end of each section of the bracket is flared outwardly as shown and channeled as at l and 8, to receive and hold the upper terminal ends of leg numbers 9 and IE! of a frame member generally indicated at H and which comprises a cross member 32 formed as a horizontal continuation of the leg 9 and whose one end is adapted for removable engagement with an inwardly turned and channeled end portion 13 of the leg Hi. The upper end of the leg i0 is permanently secured by rivets, spotwelding, or any other suitable means as indicated at It, to the bracket I, while the elongated upper end of the leg 9 is rotatable within the cooperating channel portions of the flared end of the bracket through which it extends. This upper end of the leg 9 further extends vertically within the bracket l and terminates just below the bottom end of the handle 5 secured within the bracket. By this arrangement the upper end of the leg portion 9 of the frame may be rotated within the bracket I to move the cross member 12 into and out of engagement with the horizontal and channeled end portion it of the leg ill.

The two sections of the bracket I are held together not only by the rivets 5 extending through 2 the handle 5 but also by rivets, spot-welding, or other suitable means as at 15 extending through the web portions E6 of the bracket sections.

Also formed within each section of the brackets, centrally of the webbed portions thereof, are two cooperating channels ll Within which is securely mounted by means of a rivet, spot-Welding, or the like, as indicated at It, a depending threaded shaft I9 provided with a thumb nut 20.

Slidably mounted on the shaft IQ for vertical movement with respect thereto is a clamping element comprising a frame 2| of arcuate shape and formed with a central enlargement 22 which is formed with a central opening 23 so that the frame may move upwardly and downwardly along the shaft [9 according to the position of the thumb nut 20.

The bottom ends of the frame 2| are secured to or formed integral with a cross-head 2 2 whose outer ends are apertured as at 25 and 26 to slidably embrace

21 and 28 of the leg numbers 9 and [0, respectively. The lower surface of the cross-head 24 is formed with outward and downward extensions 29 to form an inverted channel for engaging the top end of a mop draped over the cross member I2 and for securing the mop to the cross member l2 by advancement of the thumb nut 2t on the threads of the shaft H9. The Clamping action between the clamping element or cross-head 24 not only secures the upper end of the mop to the cross-arm IE but also secures the free end of the cross-arm H2 in permanent engagement within the inwardly turned and channeled end portion 13 of the leg iii. At the same time the legs 9 and I!) of the frame are prevented from spreading, due to lateral thrusts of the mop head, by their extension through the openings formed in the ends of the cross-head 2 1.

By this arrangement, and as best illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the cross member 12 of the frame may be swung about the pivot established by leg 9 to either side so that a used or soiled mop may be conveniently detached from the cross member !2 and also a new or freshly laundered mop may be slid into place over the cross member I2 into proper position within the frame and subsequently secured thereto by means of the clamping element as aforesaid.

While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A mop holder adapted for attachment to one end of a mop stick, a head comprising in combination a bracket, means formed at one end of the bracket for permanent attachment to the mop stick, said bracket having a pair of diverging tubular openings formed therein at its opposite end, a frame comprising two diverging leg members, one of said legs being permanently and fixedly secured at one of its ends within one of said openings in the bracket and turned at right angles to itself at its opposite end, said turned portion of the leg having a channel extending throughout its length, the other of said leg members being rotatably attached at one of its ends Within the other of said openings in the bracket, the opposite end of said last mentioned leg being turned at right angles to itself into a horizontal portion adapted at its outer end for selective engagement with said channel in the inwardly turnedportion' of the first mentioned leg to'provide a support for a mop, a clamping element including a cross-head having an aperture formedin each of its ends and slidably and adjustably attached by means of said apertures to said frame to keep the legs thereof from spreading and for exerting pressure against the mop and locking pressure to the engaged ends of said legs" whereby removal of pressureof the clamping element from the mop said horizontal portion of said last mentioned leg will be free to become disengaged from the channel in the other leg and swung outwardly in a horizontal plane away from said other leg for slidable removal of the mop therefrom.
