LEVER OPERATED, SLIDING JAW MOP HOLDER Filed Agril 27. 1946 Inventor WJPARKER.
Patented Nov. 1, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEICE LEVER" OPERATED SLI-DING 'J MOP HOLDER:
, This' -inventionzt relates totnew and usefulim! provements and:structural refinements in mop. holders, andv the principal. object of. the invention is to provide a=device of the character herein described, such as may be efiectively and conveniently employedtforrthe attachment of mops and the like. to" the. handles v.usually. usedin .association with the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mop holderin' which the mop may be readily applied-or removed.
Another object of the inventionuis to provide a mop holder. which is simple.-in-constructionand operation,- and which cannotabe. easily damaged.
An additional object of the invention isto-provide a: mop-holder which .will. readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken in the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a cross sectional View, taken in the plane of the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention embodies in its construction a one-piece wire rod angulated to form spaced parallel side members II] and a cross member l I at one end of said side members, said members as a Whole, defining a frame designated by the general reference character l2.
The free ends of the side members ID are convergently angulated as at l3, and terminate in a relatively narrow yoke I4, at the remaining end of the framework I2. It will be noted that the rod forming this yoke is looped to provide a pair of aligned ears [5 on the sides of the yoke, the purpose of which will be more fully hereinafter described.
A further one-piece rod extends between the side members I 6 and constitutes what may be referred to as a movable jaw l6, the same being provided intermediate its ends with an offset portion forming a detent, so to speak, IT.
The end portions of the jaw l6 are coiled to providepairseof eyes l6, the. latter being slidably,
positioned. on the side members I!) as will be clearly :appa-rentfrom the accompanying drawings;
- The extremities of the yoke 14 are suitably em-- beddedein-thewendof aconventional mop handle l6; and. an additionalone-piece rod is employed to -form: a double arm crank designated generally by, therreferencex character 26;
In effect, this'crankr consists of a looped portion 2! formed betweena relatively long. arm 22 and a relatively short arm 23-of the crank 20, the arm 22 extending generally in the direction of the handle l9 and being angulated to provide-a fingerpiece 24 and antarcuated retainer 25. It will be noted that the retainer 25 is complementary to the cross section of the handle l9 and the purpose of the components 24 and 25 will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
The crank 20 is pivotally connected, so to speak, to the frame l2 by means of a wire rod or pin 26 extending through the eyes l5 and through the loop 2|, the pin 26 being angulated as is best shown in Figure 4, in order to retain itself in position.
The free end of the arm 23 is arcuated and pivotally connected to a further arcuation provided at the end of a bar 21, this pivoted connection being collectively designated by the reference character 28.
The remaining end of the bar 21 is similarly coiled as at 29 around the detent I! of the jaw I6, whereby a pivotal connection of the bar 21 to the jaw is obtained.
When the invention is placed in use, the retainer 25 of the crank 20 is disengaged from the handle l9, and the crank 2|] is swung or rotated in the direction of the arrow 3|], to a position designated by the phantom lines 3!.
This movement will, of course, be accompanied by a corresponding movement of the bar 21 as indicated by the phantom lines 32, and it will be noted that the jaw I6 will be slid along the side members ID of the framework I2, as is indicated by the phantom line 33.
The mop, or the like, (not shown) may now be inserted between the cross member I l and the jaw l6, whereupon the crank 20 is again manipulated so that the retainer 25 engages the handle 19, as is best shown in the accompanying Figure 2. This action will, of course, result in the gripping, so to speak, of the mop between the cross member I I and the jaw l6 whereby the mop will be firmly and securely retained in position.
It is believed that the use and the advantages of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this ing end of said frame, said rod being looped to form a pair of aligned ears on the sides of said yoke, a further one-piece rod extending between said side members and constituting a movable jaw, an offset portion forming a detent intermediate the ends of said jaw, the end portions of said jaw being coiled to provide pairs of eyes slidable on said side members, a double-arm crank positioned between and pivoted to said ears, one arm of saidcrank constituting an operating lever, a bar pivotally connected to the remaining arm of said crank and to the detent on said jaw, and a handle secured to'said yoke.
, 2. A mop holder comprising in combination, a
one-piece wire rod angulated to form a pair of spaced parallel side members and a cross member,
at one end thereof, said members defining frame, the free ends of said rod being convergent and terminating in a relatively narrow yoke at the remaining end of said frame, a handle secured to said yoke, said rod being looped to provide a pair of aligned ears on the sides oil said yoke, a pin extending through said ears, a further one-piece rod extending between said side members and constituting a movable jaw, an offset portion forming a detent intermediate the ends of said'jaw, the end portions of said jaw being coiled to provide pairs of eyes slidably positioned on said side members, an additional one-piece rod forming a double-arm crank, a loop provided between the arms of said crank, said loop of said crank being pivotally mounted on said pin between the ears of said yoke, and a bar pivotally connected at one end thereof to one arm of said crank and pivotally connected at the remaining end thereof to said detent on said jaw, the remaining arm of said crank being angulated to provide a finger-piece and terminating in a retainer, the mop' being receivable between said cross member and said jaw, and said retainer being releasably engageable with said handle.
