LEATHER TRIMMING MACHINE Filed Dec. 30, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet l IIIIIII IIIIIIII] INVENTOR Oct. 26, 1954 A. w. SMITH 2,692,399 I LEATHER TRIMMING MACHINE Filed Dec. 30, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 FIG. 3.
INVENTOR Patented Oct. 26, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LEATHER TRIMMING MACHINE Arthur W. Smith, Little Rock, Ark.
Application December 30, 1952, Serial No. 328,705
3 Claims. -1
This invention relates to a leather trimming machine and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a leather trimming machine consisting of a base atop which is affixed a vertical standard upon the upper portion of which is mounted a motor having a drive shaft extending vertically upwardly therefrom.
Upon the other side of the upper portion of the standard is a frame having mounted therein a vertical shaft atop which is a pulley which pulley is connected with the pulley on the drive shaft of the motor by means of a belt. The frame is equipped with reduction gears connected with the upper portion of the vertical shaft and with a drive gear at the lower end of the shaft. The, drive gear at the lower end of the shaft connects with a bevel gear at the lower end of a driven shaft atop which is a circular cutting blade. Connected by means of a universal joint is a shaft emanating from the reduction gearing to further gearing which drives an angularly disposed shaft at the lower end of which is a feed wheel. The feed wheel is placed immediately adjacent the cutting knife and the apparatus is such that a shoe may be held with the plane of its sole in a vertical direction and trimmed in one operation by feeding the same and guiding the same to the feed wheel whereupon the sole will be trimmed in a neat and workmanlike manner.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide an apparatus of the character set forth which is comparatively simple in construction, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel angularly disposed cutting and angularly disposed feed wheel both forming parts of the invention.
A still further object of the invention is to provide, in an apparatus of the character set forth, novel gearing forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view similar to Figure 1 but showing certain elements of the invention in greater detail, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a base It to which is affixeda vertically extending standard .II having a reduced upper portion I2.
To one side of the portion I2 there is aflixed by bolts I3 or the like a motor I4 having a vertically and upwardly extending drive shaft I5 provided with a pulley I6 at its upper end.
A frame generally designated at I! is affixed to the other side of the portion I2 of the standard II by an interconnecting web plate I8. The frame I I has connected to the upper side thereof in vertically spaced relation thereto by means of a plurality of bolts 20 or the like a horizontally extending plate I9. Vertically extending through plate I9 and the inner portion of the frame I! is a shaft 2| having a pulley 22 mounted upon the upper portion thereof, which pulley is interconnected with the pulley I6 by means of an endless belt 23. A spacing collar 24 is interposed between the pulley 22 and the plate I9.
Afiixed to the shaft 2| between the plate l9 and the upper end of the frame I! is a relatively small gear 25 which is enmeshed with a relatively larger gear 26 which likewise lies between the plate I9 and the frame I! and which is mounted upon a stub shaft 2! extending between the plate I9 and frame II. A relatively small gear 28 is likewise mounted upon the shaft 21 and is enmeshed with a relatively large gear 29 mounted upon a shaft 30 which is revolubly mounted in the plate I9 and frame I! and which extends downwardly to terminate in a universal joint 3I which connects the same with'an angularly disposed shaft 32 which is journaled in an inwardly and downwardly extending arm 33 carried by a vertical arm 34 forming a part of the frame IT.
A gear 35 is affixed to the shaft 32 and is enmeshed with a gear 36 extending through a bearing 31 formed at the free end of the arm 33. The lower end of the shaft 38 which carries the gear 36 is provided with a feed wheel 39 having attached to the outer end thereof a guard plate 40. A block M is formed integrally upon the outer side of the lower portion of the frame I! and has angularly and upwardly disposed therein a shaft 42 to the upper end of which is aflixed a circular blade 43 and to the lower end of which is affixed a bevel gear 44 which is enmeshed with a gear 45 carried by the lower end of the shaft 2 I.
In operation, it will be apparent that when it is desired to trim, for example, a sole 46 which. is attached to the welt 41 of a shoe generally designated at 48, it is only necessary to maintain the plane of the sole 46 in a vertical condition while at the same time manipulating the shoe 48 by hand so that the feed wheel 39 will maintain the same in proper contact with the knife 43 thus severing from the sole 46 the surplus portions thereof, as indicated at 49 in Figure 3. It will also be apparent that the reduction gearing 25, 26, 28, 29 will act to drive the shaft 30 and consequently the shaft 32, the gears 35 and 36 to thus revolve the shaft 38 and the feed wheel 39 at a much slower rate and in an opposite direction to the rate of speed of the knife 43 and the direction thereof.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it Will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An apparatus of the character described comprising a base, a vertical standard mounted on said base, a motor mounted on one side of the top portion of said standard, a frame, a web interconnecting the frame and the opposite side of said upper portion of the standard, a drive shaft extending vertically upwardly from said motor, a pulley at the upper end of said drive shaft, a vertical driven shaft carried by said frame, a pulley at the upper end of said driven shaft, a belt interconnecting the pulleys, feed wheel means carried by said frame, reduction gearing carried by said frame and driving said feed wheel means from said vertical driven shaft, and a rotary knife mounted on said frame and driven by said vertical driven shaft, said knife and said feed wheel means being adjacent each other.
2. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said knife is angularly disposed with respect to said feed wheel means.
3. An apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein said feed wheel means is adapted to move at a speed relatively slower than the speed of said knife and wherein said wheel means and said knife are driven in opposite directions.
