This invention relates to an article of furniture which is adapted for use as a love seat, chair, couch and the like and which may be converted into a bed.

The invention has particular reference to an improvement which provides a pillow rest when the article of furniture is employed as a bed and which retains the upper end of the mattress in upwardly projecting relation when the article of furniture is in couch or seat forming relation.

Another object of the invention is to provide a foldable frame adapted to be respectively disposed in bed forming and seat forming relations and to which a cross member is swingably connected for movement from upwardly disposed angular relation forming a pillow rest when the frame is in bed forming condition to depending relation for retaining the mattress in folded position when the frame is in collapsed or seat forming condition.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

Fig. 1 is a top plan View of an article of furniture provided with a foldable frame constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the same in extended bed forming relation.

Fig. 2 is a side view of the frame with portions of the furniture frame shown in vertical section.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side view of the inner portion of the frame with a portion of the furniture frame shown in section.

Fig. 5 is a side view of the frame shown in fully folded condition within the love seat, chair, couch and the like and with the latter shown in vertical section.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the article of furniture shown therein is a love seat but which may be a chair, couch and the like. Pivotally connected to the opposite sides of the rigid frame A of the love seat, chair, couch and the like is a foldable metal frame l0 consisting of a plurality of hingedly connected sections which are adapted to be disposed in aligned relation for supporting a mattress so as to serve as a bed and which are adapted to be disposed in collapsed relation within the confines of the furniture frame to constitute a support for seat cushions so as to serve as a love seat. As illustrated the foldable frame consists of four sections, namely, an inner end section II, an intermediate section [2, a connecting section I3 and an outer end section l4 each of which is of angle iron construction consisting of a vertical flange and a horizontal flange extending inwardly from the lower edge of the vertical flange.

The foldable frame It also includes a cross member I 5 which is pivotally connected with one of the sections for movement therewith from inclined relation forming a pillow rest when the sections are arranged in bed forming condition to depending relation for retaining the inner end of the mattress in upwardly disposed relation when the sections are in collapsed condition.

The inner end section ll consists of spaced parallel side rails I! and H! which are connected together at the inner ends thereof by an angle bar I9. The side rails are pivotally connected at their outer ends to oppositely disposed side rails 20 and 2| of the intermediate section 12 by pivot pins 22 extending through the vertical flanges thereof and with the vertical flanges of the side rails ll and E8 of the inner end section I 1 arranged within the vertical flanges of the side rails 20 and 2| of the intermediate section 12. The inner end section I! is supported by the furniture frame for pivotal swinging movement by means of upwardly extending arms 23 pivoted at their lower ends to the vertical flanges of the side'rails l! and it on pivot pins 24 and pivoted at their upper ends to the upper ends of flat bars 25 on pivot pins 26 which bars are bolted or otherwise secured to the inner faces of the side panels 21 and 28 of the furniture frame. Links 29 are pivoted at their inner ends to the arms 23 on pivot pins 38 and at their outer ends the said links are pivoted to the projecting ends of the vertical flanges of the side rails 20 and H of the intermediate section [2 on pivot pins 3E.

The side rails 26 and 2! of the intermediate section. 12 are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the vertical flanges of the side rails 33 and 34 of the connecting section [3 on pivot pins 35 with the vertical flanges of the intermediate section disposed outwardly of the vertical flanges of the connecting section IS. 36 and 37 of the outer end section M on pivot pins 38 extending through the vertical flanges thereof and which sections are arranged with the vertical flanges of the outer end section it disposed outwardly of the vertical flanges of the connecting section [3. The side rails 36 and ill of the outer end section I4 are connected together by suitable cross bars at the outer ends thereof.

A wire mesh spring 4| of any desired construction is connected with and stretched between the inwardly directed flanges of the side rails and end bars of the foldable frame II] for supporting a mattress M when in extended bed forming relation and which spring is adapted to fold with the folding of the sections into 001- lapsed condition within the furniture frame and to retain the mattress M in folded relation between the sections with the upper end of the mattress extending upwardly at the inner end of the inner end section II.

In order to rigidly support the foldable frame when in extended bed forming relation, two pairs of

legs

3 and 44 are provided which are respectively connected with the intermediate section I2 and the outer end section I adjacent their outer ends. The upper ends of the legs 43 are pivoted on pivot pins 45 to lugs 36 rigidly secured to and depending from the side rails 29 and 2! of the intermediate section !2. A cross bar '41 extends between the legs 43 and is secured to the inwardly directed flanges thereof.

36 and 31 of the outer end section I4 on pivot pins 48 extending through the vertical flanges thereof. The legs 44 project above the outer end section I4 and terminate in forwardly directed upper ends 49 to which the outer ends of links 59 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 51 with the inner ends of the links pivotally connected with the side rails 33 and 34 respectively of the connecting section IS on pivot pins 52. The side rails 36 and 3'! of the outer end section M are provided with outwardly projecting pins 53 adapted to engage in notches Si in the inner longitudinal edges of the legs 44 when the legs are in collapsed relation with the frame for limiting the collapsing movement of said legs.

The legs 43 are braced by diagonally extending bars 56 which are pivotally connected thereto substantially medially thereof on pivot pins 51 and at their upper ends the said bars are pivotally connected to the outer ends of bent bars 58 on pivot pins 59. The said bars 58 are pivotally connected to the outer faces of the

20 and 21 respectively of the intermediate section I2 on pivot pins 60 and have their inner ends rigidly affixed to short bars 6|. The short bars 61 are pivoted to the inner faces of the side panels 21 and 28 of the furniture frame on pivot pins 62 and the same are tensioned by coiled contractile springs 63 secured at their inner ends to lugs 64 pivoted on pivot pins 65 to brackets 56 secured to the inside faces of said side panels 21 and 28 respectively. The outer ends of the springs 63 are secured to lugs 61 pivoted on pivot pins 58 to the free ends of the short bars 6|. The springs 63 are in stretched tensioned condition when the sections of the foldable frame are in collapsed relation with the furniture frame and function to facilitate movement thereof from a lowered collapsed condition within the furniture frame to an elevated relation in which the sections are arranged in aligned bed forming relation.

In order to connect the sections together for effecting collapsing thereof within the confines of the furniture frame by the upward swinging movement of the outer end section I4, a pair oZangulated links I8 and II is arranged at each side of the foldable frame, the links 70 being their outer ends.

The links II are connected at their inner ends with the links I0 intermediate the ends thereof on pivot pins I3 and the said links ii! are formed with rectangular notches I'll in the upper edges thereof adjacent Links l5 are also provided at each side of the foldable frame which are pivoted at their outer ends against the inside faces of the vertical flanges of the side rails 20 and 2| respectively on pivot pins I6. The inner ends of said links are provided with headed pins 11 which slidably protrude through slots I8 in the vertical flanges of the side rails 20 and 2I respectively of the intermediate section I2, the enlarged heads at the outer ends of said pins retaining the same in engagement in said slots and which links I5 limit the folding of the connecting section I3 into right angular relation with the intermediate section l2 as shown in Fig. 5 by the engagement of the headed pins 71 against the ends of the slots T8.

The cross member I5 is rigidly afllxed at its ends to end members 93 which are pivoted at their lower ends on pivot pins 94 to the upper ends of the plates 95 riveted or otherwise secured to the vertical flanges of the side rails I! and I8 of the inner end section II. Links 96 are pivotally connected at their inner ends to the end members 93 on pivot pins 91 and at their outer ends the said links are pivotally connected to the projecting ends of the vertical flanges of the side rails 28 and 2| of the intermediate section I2 on the pivot pins 3!.

f'his disposes the cross member I5 in inclined relation toward the back of the article of furniture when the collapsible frame It is disposed in bed forming condition and with the cross member spaced above the frame for accommodating the forward end of the mattress M therebeneath.

In moving the foldable frame I0 from an extended bed forming relation to a collapsed condition within the furniture frame, the outer end section I4 is swung upwardly on its pivotal connection with the connecting section I3. The upward swinging movement thereof causes the legs 44 to swing inwardly about their pivotal connection with said section so that the legs are swung into substantially parallel relation therewith to dispose the notches 54 in engagement with the pins 53 to thereby prevent further inward collapsing movement of said legs. The outer end section I4 is then moved inwardly to rock the connecting section I3 on its pivotal connection with the intermediate section I2. This raises the links I5 from aligned position with the sections to an angular position and when the headed pins H of the links 15 engage against the inner ends of the slots 78, the connecting section l3 will be disposed in right angular relation to the intermediate section I2 and the outer end' section I4 will be parallel with the intermediate section I2. The intermediate section I2 is then tilted into an inclined position and swung inwardly and downwardly about its pivotal connection with the inner end section II to dispose the said inner end section II in vertical relation as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This movement of the intermediate section I2 causes the bent bars 58 to rock about the pivot pins -60 and the short bars BI to rock about the pivot pins 62 whereby the intermediate section I2 is located within the furniture frame at the rear of the front panel I06.

Swinging of the intermediate section I2 about its pivotal connection with the inner end section II lowers the three outer sections to the position shown in Fig. 5 whereby the outer end section I4 is at the proper elevation for receiving seat cushions S shown in broken line in Fig. 5 for use as a love seat or the like. The mattress M folds with the foldable frame ID to dispose the outer section of the mattress in doubled relation upon the inner section thereof and with the inner end of the inner section moved to an upwardly extending position within the back of the furniture frame. This movement of the inner end section II and the intermediate section I2 swings the cross member I5 from the inclined relation shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings to the depending relation shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. As the mattress M is being moved to the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the cross member I5 swings downwardly thereagainst to retain the upwardly directed portion between the same and the inner end portion of the wire mesh spring 4| and with the upper end of the mattress abutting against a cross head I137. The cross head I!" is secured to the angle bar I9 at the inner end of the inner end section I I to form a head or stop for the inner end of the mattress.

What is claimed is:

1. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable seat and bed forming frame composed of an inner end section, an intermediate section, a connecting section and an outer end section, means pivotally connecting said sections together in end to end relation, means swingably connecting said inner end section to the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from a collapsed folded condition within the furniture frame in which the inner end section is in upright relation to an extended condition in which the sections are arranged in end to end bed forming relation, side members rigidly affixed to the opposite sides of said inner end section in spaced I relation from the inner end thereof and extending upwardly therefrom when the sections are in bed forming relation, a frame including end members and a cross member aflixed to said end members, said end members being pivotally connected to said side members respectively in spaced relation with reference to said inner end section for receiving under said cross member a mattress disposed in supported relation on said foldable frame, and links pivotally connected with said intermediate section and with said end members for swinging movement of the last mentioned frame from upstanding relation to constitute a pillow rest when the foldable frame is disposed in bed forming relation to a substantially right angular relation with the side members to dis pose the cross member against the mattress when the inner end section is moved to said upright relation by the movement of the foldable frame into seat forming relation.

2. In an article of furniture of the character described, a furniture frame, a foldable seat and bed forming frame composed of an innerend section, an intermediate section, a connecting section and an outer end section, means pivotally connecting said sections together in end to end relation, means swingably connecting said inner end section to the furniture frame for movement of the foldable frame from a collapsed folded condition within the furniture frame in which the inner end section is in upright relation to an extended condition in which the sections are arranged in end to end bed forming relation, side members rigidly affixed to the opposite sides of said inner end section in spaced relation from the inner end thereof and extending upwardly therefrom when the sections are in bed forming relation, a frame including end members and a cross member afiixed to said end members, said end members being pivotally connected to said side members respectively in spaced relation with reference to said inner end section for receiving under said cross member a mattress disposed in supported relation on said foldable frame, said intermediate section including side rails having free inner ends extending inwardly beyond the pivotal connection of said section with said inner end section, and links pivotally connected with said free inner ends and with said end members for swinging movement of the last mentioned frame from upstanding relation to constitute a pillow rest when the foldable frame is disposed in bed forming relation to a substantially right angular relation with the side members and in substantially parallel relation with said inner end section to dispose the cross member against the mattress when the inner end section is moved to said upright relation by the movement of the foldable frame into seat forming relation.
