MEDICAL COMPQUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,145, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed October 18, 1882. (No specimens.) I
T061, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. H. VVHEAL- 'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orislield, in the county of Somerset and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and use 'ul Improvements in Medical Compounds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a medicinal compound to be used in the treatment of consumption and chronic dyspepsia.
The compound consists of the following ingredients, united in about the proportions stated, viz: best old West India rum, one gallon; shavings of light-wood, or pine-knots, eigh t ounces; common table-salt, two tea-spoonfuls. These ingredients, when mixed, are allowed to stand for about three or four weeks, after which the liquor is poured 011' and hottled for use.
The light wood or pine-knots should be of great age, and before being used for the purpose above mentioned they must be buried in a salt pond, so as to remain covered with wa ter for a period not less than seven years, during which time they will become thoroughly impregnated with salt. They are now ready for use and may be cut into small shavings by any suitable means. The quantity of these shavings used with a gallon of rum is preferably about eight ounces, though the precise quantity may be varied to suit different cases.
