MACHINE FOR WINDING FENCE-WIRE.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. KNIGHT, of Colfax, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Winding Fence-Wire and I do hereby declare that the i'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description oftheinventiomwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective View of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the reelcrank and a part of the wheel removed to show the arrangement of the retaining-spring, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.

One of the heads or end disks, D2, of the reel has a series of circumferential perforations, f, through any one of which a pin or plug, g, may be inserted from the inside, with its outer end abutting against arm dof standard C on that side of the machine to prevent the reel from turning.
G is a stiff spring, which is fastened by a bolt, h, to one of the uprights C, with its free end bearing against the projecting squared (Model.)

L is the tongue, which may be provided with a hinged support at its outer end to keep the machine, when in use, in its proper upright position. f
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the use' and operation of this machine will readily be understood. The wire is wound upon the reel by turning crank E, which is at such aheight from the ground that a man will get a good purchase in working it. It is prevented from slipping back (by the strain or tension of the wire) by spring G, the machine being steadied upon the ground by the braces H. The reel may be xed at any point-by inserting the pin or plug g through its appropriate aperture fin the reel-disk. Unwinding of the wire is effected in the `same manner by reversing the machine and turning the reel in` the opposite direction.
I am aware that the combination of a suitably-constructed portable frame, a reel hung in said frame, and means for rotating the reel is not new, nor do I claim such construction and combination, broadly; but
