Claims priority, application Austria October 16, 1950 4 Claims.
1 The numerous suggestions in connection with the development of devices for introducing the lubricants into the mould for the continuous casting give evidence of the paramount impor-.
tance which is attributed in ascertaining a satisfactory lubrication.
With the devices hitherto known it is, however, not possible to ascertain a lubrication which meets all demands with regard to reliability in service. In particular an appropriate automatic dosage of the lubricant during the casting process was so far not achieved, and furthermore the uniform distribution of the lubricant on the inner surface of the mould met with difiiculties.
Suggestions as for instance the use of a porous metal ring inserted in the inner wall of the mould with an adjacent lubrication chamber, which is connected to a lubricant container, did not perform reliably, because such constructions are subjected to unavoidable sooting, thus causing soon an unequal distribution of the lubricant. Besides, with such arrangements no automatic dosage of the lubricant, adjusted to the progress of the casting, has so far been provided.
The existing disadvantages can be eliminated if, according to the invention, a ring groove in the upper end of the mould is provided, which is subdivided into sections by inserted pieces, whereby the lubricant is led uniformly into these segments, independently from each other, by means of admission channels.
It is of particular advantage to use for the supply of the lubricant a variable delivery lubrication pump which secures a uniform delivery to all the ring groove segments, the pump being preferably directly coupled with the billet lower= ing gear. By this arrangement it is possible to increase the lubrication supply for greater billet lowering rates, and to lessen the lubrication supply when the lowering rate decreases.
A practicable construction of the device according to the invention is shown below in a drawing. As shown in Fig. 1 (cross-section) and in Fig. 2 (plan view) a ring groove 2 is provided in the chamfered upper and flanged end of the mould l which is subdivided by inserted pieces 3. The sections 4 of the ring groove (groove segments) are filled with the lubricant in dosed quantities through the admission channels 5 which extend radially through the flanged end. In each ring groove section the lubricant is spreading uniformly and flows off over the lower edge 6 of the ring groove. The ring groove 6 is closed up, for example by a screwed-0n cover I,
2 which leaves a narrow slot 8 open for the discharge of the lubricant along the ring groove segments.
In subdividing, according to the invention, the ring groove, which is in a plane vertical to the axis of the mould, in possibly small sections which can, independently from each other, be uniformly supplied with lubricant, the influence of a possible occurring slanting of the mould on the uniformity of the distribution of the lubricant is practically eliminated. Sooting does not appear to be important at all with this construction as even traces of soot that may deposit will continuously be rinsed away by the lubricant.
Furthermore a particular advantage of the device according to the invention derives from the possibility to dose the lubricant, this depending upon the lowering rate of the billet. Moreover this device can be applied or adjusted to any cross section of the mould.
We claim:

Device for introducing a fluid lubricant into the upper end of a mould for the continuous casting of high temperature melting metals, more particularly iron and steel, including a mould body having an open upper end forming a mouth the surface of which is chamfered and provided with an annular groove, inserts in said groove subdividing the same into sections, admission channels extending inwardly through the wall of the mould body and communicating with each of the groove sections for passing lubricant directly to the inner edge of the mouth, and means for substantially closing the upper edge of the groove, said means projecting in- Wardly from the groove leaving a narrow annular space above said chamfered surface of the mouth in order that the lubricant may flou directly into the extreme upper part of the mould body.
2. A lubricating device for moulds for the con tinuous casting of metals including a mould body having an open upper end provided with a lateral flange thereabout, the opening being chamfered and the upper surface of said chamfer being provided with an annular groove, inserts in the groove dividing the latter into sections, admission channels in the flange the inner ends of each of which communicate with a section of the groove, and a cover substantially closing the upper edge of the groove and slightly spaced from the lower portion of the chamfered surface to allow passage of the lubricant from the groove sections into the inner surface of the body of the mould.
3. A lubricating device for moulds for the continuous casting of metals including a mould body having an open upper end provided with a lateral flange thereabout, the open upper end being internally chamfered and provided with a vertically disposed annular groove in the chamfer, the flange portion of the mould at the upper surface being provided with a recess communicating with the upper edge of the groove, a plurality of inserts in the groove having inclined upper surfaces, said inserts extending respectively to the bottom of the recess and above said chamfered portion of the open mouth and dividing the groove into sections, admission channels in the flange, the inner ends of which communicate with the sections of the groove for delivering lubricant thereto, a cover including an annular portion seated within the recess and flush with the upper surface of the flange, and a conical portion engaging the inclined surfaces of the inserts and spaced above the lower chamfered surface of the mouth and terminating in an annular opening aligning with the walls of the mould body.
4. The device of claim 3, in which the annular opening aligning with the walls of the mould body is of such width as to provide an area approximating the area of the admission channels whereby the lubricant will be uniformly supplied at every point of the annular opening.
