BOLTlNG-CHEST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 269,017, dated December 12, 1885.,
- Application filed July 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS CORNELIUS, ot' the city of St. Louis, in the State ot'Missouri, have. invented a certain Sectional Bolting-Uhest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvement consists in a sectional bolting-chest constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chest with the driving mechanism removed and part broken out. Fig. 2 is a transverse section enlarged. Fig. 3 is a perspective inside view of the two sections that make up an end, showing the sections disconnected from each other. Fig. .4 is a detail perspective view illustrating part of the interior construction, and Fig. 5 shows the parts represented in Fig. 4 disconnected from each other. Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the ends of the side bars, showing the male fastenings.
My improvement in its simplest form may be applied to a single-reel boltingchest.
The improvement is described as applied to a four-reel chest.
Each end of the chest consists of two sections, A and B, A being the lower and B the upper section. These sections are connected by metal plates 0 and 1), that lap the horizontal joint between the sections. The plates have side flanges that embrace the upright corner-timbers A and B.
E are bolts passing through the plates 0 and D and through the uprights A and B. Each of the inner plates, D, has a dovetail mortise, d, to receive a dovetail lug, f, at the end ofthe side bar, F. Each of the side bars, F, extends from the corner-post A B to a central post, G, to whichit is connected in the same manner as to the corner-post A B.
H are locking-plates attached to the ends, havingdovetail mortises or orifices similar to the plates D, for attachment of the intermediate side rails, I, and top rails, J, said rails having similar connection to the central post, Gr. These fastenings are similar to those used in connecting the side rails to the head and foot frames of bedsteads, and, being well known,need no detailed description. The side walls, K, of the chest are attached to the longitudinal rails.
L are the doors by which access is bad to the reel-chambers. These doors consist of panel-frames covered with linen for ventilation.
M is the top decking, and N the central decking. 7
At ()is shown a sill-rail,of which there may be one' upon each side, connecting the ends together.
The conveyer-boxes are shown at P. These are made in sections of a length to permit of ready handling and transportation. They are shown with an upper and lower trough or channelpseparated by cut-oft slides Q. The
upper edges of the conveyer-boxes are beveled so as to form an acute edge, P, that fits in a channel formed at the lower edge of the cantboards 1%, between the'same and a strip, R, to which the boards are secured. The upper ends of the cant-boards are secured to a strip, R of triangular section,that rests upon the top of one of the longitudinal rails 1 in the case of the outer line of cant-boards. The
two inner lines of cant-boards bear against each other at the center of the chest and give mutual support to each other, forming an an gle or edge upon which sets the lower edge of the-partition or hog-back S. The boards of which this is composed stand vertically, and have their lower ends beveled to fit the cantboards upon one side of the edge, and are secured to a strip, S, that is formed to fit the cant-boards upon the other side. The partition extends up between the two reels T, so as to'completely separate the reel-chambers. The upperedge of the partition is supported by the decking. The pieces of board forming the cant-boards and partitions are tongued and grooved at the edges, so that the-sections can be put together with absolutely tight joints.
My present invention does not apply to any of the driving mechanism or to the bolts or conveyers, per se, but to the chest'prop'er, the same being made in detachable sections, that are marked in such a manner that they can be put together and the chest put up by any mechanic. In two-reel bolting-chests, where one reel is over the other, and in single-reel bolting-chests,the partition S would of course be absent.

3. The combination, in a bolting-chest, ofthe conveyer-boxes and can't-boards, made in detachable sections, and the supporting side rails, I, of the case.
4. The combination of conveyer-box P, detachable cant-boards supported thereon and on the side rails, I, and detachable connections for securing said side rails to the ends of the chest, substantially as set forth.
