UNITED STATES, PATENT, OFFICE.
GEORGE MILES, OF VVELLESLEY HILLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,923, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed March 4, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE JMILES, of \Vellesley Hills, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement; in steamBoilers, of
Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in steam-boilers, whereby I am enabled to effect great economy of space and a considerable saving of fuel, and also to provide for the reception of any sediment or deposit and ready removal of the same without the necessity of cleaning out the entire boiler. I also provide a means for allowing the proper expansion and contraction of the boiler-shell and steam drum or space.
' My invention consists of a multitubular boiler-shell placed at an inclination from front to rear, in connection with a steain-drun1 arranged horizontallyover the inclined shell, and to which it is connected by a neck or enlarged tube at the front and by a series of vertical tubes at the rear, in such a manner that a completecirculation through the inclined shell and steam-drum is effectually insured.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a iront elevation of a steam-boiler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
A represents a brick-work casing. and sup- I port, which may be of anysuitable size or construction.
B is an inclined shell, provided with a series ofiflne-tubes, b. The tront lower end of the inclined shell B is supported on a projection, H. The shell B is inclined from front to rear,
as shown.
At the lower rear end of the shell B ,is a chamber or receptacle, F, forming a part of the boiler, for the purpose of receiving any sediment or deposit forming in the boiler, and which would naturally fall down into the said receptacle. The receptacle F is provided with (No model.)
a suitable pipe,f, for blowing off the sediment,
G is the steam chamber or drum, arranged over the shell B, and extending the whole length of the same, forming a part of the boiler. The said steam-drum is connected to the shell B at the front end by an enlarged tube or neck, I), and at the rear end by a series of tubes, E, inserted in the extensions K otthe steam-drum and L of the inclined shell B. By means of this connection of the tubes E with the shell B and steam-drum, allowance is made for the expansion and contraction of shell and steamdrum.
G is the furnace-grate, and I the exit-pipe for the escape of the products of combustion. Thearrows marked 1 indicate the course of the products of combustiomand those marked 2 the circulation of the water through the shell and steam-drum. The water in the shell B, coniing'in contact with the flue-tubes b b, becomes more highly heated in the upper inclined portion than at thelower portion, consequently causinga circulation of water up through the neck D into and through the steam-drum, and down the pipes E back to the inclined shell, and so continuing and causing a complete and continuous circulation of the water.
What I claim as my invention is- A steam -boiler composed of the shell B, downwardly inclined from front to rear, and the flue-pipes b, in combination with the steamdrum 0, the enlarged tube D, and expansiontubes E, the spaces inclosing the boiler and steam-drum being separated by a portion of the casing A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE MILES.
