In spools of the type and kind under consideration, it has been customary to form :the spool of a unitary body usually of wood and one of the-end fianges 'of the body has been slit to provide an anchorage :for the thread or strand end. The body parts J1, J1 can he ,formed in any desired manner. One method of procedure would be to mould .the same .from .wood Waste or other fibrous materials so that .the cost of producing these bodies would be relatively small. In moulding the rims 2-5,, :26 upon the .body parts M, H, relatively thick wall portions are .formed, as (at 21,- ;note Rig. .2, in alinement with the {abutting surfaces 32 5, so as to strengthen the rims at :these positions. The rims .26, 26' include outer surface portions 28 which fill the recesses 1 53 .and 12D and :have outer surfaces which are flush with the outer suriaces of "the walls l3 and I l-,;as will i clearly appear from a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing.

It will appear from :a consideration of Fig. 1 of the -,drawing that the final spool product will .be of arelatively light weight by virtue of the large 'hollowgchamber .30 .formed within the body portions, this in contrast *to spools of standard construction, in which a .single bore would be provided in thespool lbody common :to the .diameter of the apertures 15 and I6.
In Figsue and!) of -the-.drawing, .-I:have:shown a modification, wherein the spool 3| is formed from three similar body parts 32, 32' and 32", one of parts, the part 32, being shown in perspective in Fig. 5 of the drawing. These parts collectively will form a spool body, similar to the two part body of Fig. 1 and, for this reason, no detailed description of the structure of the body parts will be made, except to generally identify the end walls [3, M, the flanges l1, l8 and recesses 19 and 20.
The several parts 32, 32' and 32" are secured together by end rims, similar to the rims 26, 28 and one of these rims is indicated at 26" in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The rims 26" differ rom the rims 26, 26 in having three thick wall portions 2'! instead of two thick wall portions, as in Fig. 2. The thick wall portions 21' are disposed at the abutting surfaces of the separate parts, which is designated by the reference character 25' in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
Aside from the foregoing, the structure of the spool shown in Fig. 4 will be similar to the spool shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
In forming the rims, these rims can be die cast separately or collectively on the spool body in accordance with the teachings of application Serial Number 213,123, filed of equal date herewith.
For purposes of description, my spool structure may be said to comprise a spool body divided longitudinally with respect to the axis thereof into separate parts, with means encircling the periphery of the parts to retain said parts together and, at the same time, form finished rim edges on said parts which can have thread holding nicks formed therein. One of such nicks is shown at 33 in Fig. 2. An advantage of such nicks is that they are non-chippable, by comparison with the nicks of conventional wood spools which tend to chip or break away rather easily.
It will be understood that the enlarged portions 21, 21' which extend onto the flat parts of the spool bodies, in addition to reinforcing the spool, also key the parts against relative rotation.
The rims are composed of plastic material of the general type and kind, known as thermoplastic materials, used in injection moulding machines and these materials, when hardened, shrink upon the spool part to aid in securing the parts together. The spool body is preferably formed of woody material, as stated, and may be a moulded product or a conventionally fabricated product. Modulated products may incorporate, as a filler material, wood flour, powdered stone or other inorganic material, paper, textile material, and the like. Conventionally formed spool bodies may be of metal, paper, and ceramic material as well as of wood.
By using a suflicient injection pressure the rims can be made to indent, or become embedded in, the spool parts when the latter are composed of relatively soft material.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A flanged thread spool having an annular die cast plastic rim around at least one of the flanges, said spool being split longitudinally, the flanges having flats at the split portion thereof, and said rim having thick wall portions engaging the flats of said spool.
2. A spool of the character described, comprising a hollow thin wall body, said body having end walls with central apertures therein, the end walls including outwardly extending flanges, said body being composed of separate parts having longitudinal abutting surfaces, die cast plastic rims encircling the flanged ends of said body and extending onto said end walls, said rims securing the parts of said body together, and a nonchippable thread holding nick in one of said rims.
3. A thread spool comprising a plurality of separate, longitudinally extending members which longitudinally abut one another to form a barrel having a pair of flanged apertured ends, the material of said flanged ends being subject to chipping on being nicked, the end face of at least one of said flanged apertured ends having an apertured boss surrounded by an annular surface, an annular plastic end portion encircling said boss and abutting said surface, the outer surface of said end portion being flush with the outer surface of the boss, said annular end portion serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, and a non-chippable threadholding nick in the rim of said annular plastic end portion.
l. A thread spool comprising a plurality of members which abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel having flanged ends, said members being composed of a material which is nickable but which is subject to chipping on being nicked, the end face of at least one of said flanged ends having a boss surrounded by an annular surface, an annular plastic rim around said flanged end and encircling the boss, said rim conforming to the contour of the flanged end and extending inwardly from said end face to the cylindrical surface of the barrel, said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, said flanged end having flat portions on the periphery thereof at place where said members abut, said rim being of greater thickness at portions thereof which engage said flat portions, and a non-chippable threadholding nick in said plastic rim.
5. A thread spool comprising a plurality of members which abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel having flanged ends, said members being composed of a, material which is nickable but which is subject to chipping on being nicked, the end face of at least one of said flanged ends having a boss surrounded by an annular surface, an annular plastic rim around said flanged end and encircling the boss, said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, said flanged end having flat portions on the periphery thereof at places where said members abut, and said rim being of greater thickness at portions thereof which engage said flat portions.
6. A spool comprising a plurality of members which abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel, an annular plastic rim, around at least one end of the barrel, said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, said barrel at said end having flat portions on the periphery thereof at places where said members abut, and said rim being of greater thickness at portions thereof which engage said flat portions.
7. A thread spool comprising a plurality of separate longitudinally extending members which longitudinally abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel, said members being composed of a material which is nickable but which is subject to chipping on being nicked, at least one end portion of the barrel having a boss surrounded by an annular surface, an annular plastic rim around said end portion and encircling the boss, said rim having a shrink fit on the end portion, said shrink fit being produced by die casting the rim on said end portion, said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, and a non-chippable threadholding nick in said plastic rim.
8. A spool comprising a plurality of separate longitudinally extending members which longitudinally abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel having flanged ends, an annular plastic rim around at least one flanged end, said rim having a shrink fit on the flanged end, said shrink fit being produced by die casting the rim on said flanged end, and said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation.
9. A spool comprising a plurality of separate longitudinally extending members which longitudinally abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel, an annular die cast, nickable plastic rim around at least one end portion of the barrel, said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, and said rim having portions of increased thickness at places where said members abut in order to reenforce the rim.
10. A spool comprising a plurality of members which abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel having flanged ends, an annular die cast plastic rim around at least one flanged end, said rim conforming to the contour of the flanged end and extending inwardly from the end face of said end to the cylindrical surface of the barrel, said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, and interengaging means on the rim and said flanged end for preventing relative rotation between said rim and end.
11. A spool comprising a plurality of members which abut one another to form a spool body comprising a barrel, an annular plastic rim around at least one end portion of the barrel, said rim serving to hold said members together in abutting relation, said rim having portions of increased thickness at places where said members abut for reenforcing the rim at said places, and the engagement between said thickened portions of the rim and said end portion serving to prevent relative rotation between the rim and said end portion.
12. A spool of the character described comprising a plurality of longitudinal members which longitudinally abut one another to form a spool body, at least one end of said body having a solid plastic rim around the same, said rim having a shrink fit on said end, said shrink fit being produced by die casting the rim around said end, and said rim being reinforced at portions of said body where said longitudinal members abut one another.
