In certain if not. most cases: it will be desirable to provide the spool withv better gudgeon supportivebearings than the central apertures l5 in their heads a-lone aio-rd. This may be done in a number of different ways.
Fig. 4 illustrates one practicable means of providing a gudgeon bearing or bushing which is probablyl also the simplest. In this provision a centrall core or filler I6 of wood is fitted loosely in .the barrel, said core having opposite end portions Ita bearing close against the surrounding ribs' llla oi the barrel so as to be centered and held frictionally therewithin and being axially bored in register with the central aperturesv of the heads so as to receive the extension of the This core or ller is merely inserted before the last of the heads is applied and its ends may extendagainst or substantially against the inner sides of said heads. Fig. 5 illustrates another practicable means of providing such a bearing or bushing. In this case a relatively thin metal tube Il is extended axiallythrough the spool with its ends il swaged over in counter-sink upon the-outer sides of the heads 'around their central apertures. To accommodate this arrangement of course it is. necessary for said central apertures of the heads to be made slightly larger than normal, to the extent of the thickness of the tube, and the tube mustof course be of an inner diameter to receivethe gudgeons upon which the spool is meant to lit. The modification of Fig. 6 illustrates what may be the ordinarily preferred bearing or bushing provision. In` this provision a metal, sleeve |18;y is` fitted into. the intended topv or upper end` of the spool through vthe central aperturev of the head at that end. -This sleeve has an outer peripheral or lateral flange I8a seating upon they outer face of saidzheadnand. formed with holes (not refer-y enced) registering with the screw holes in thev head and barrel end. The described spool or bobbin will obviously be exceptionally strong and. sturdy, especially when.`

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- ent of the United States is as follows:
1. A spool or bobbin, comprising a nangeless cylindric barrel vconsisting of a length cf a tubular thin-wall .body of magnesium alloy having a plurality of unconnected integrally formed cross-sectionally solid longitudinal 'ribs Von its inner side spaced equidistantly therearound and extending the full length thereof, a rseparate iianging head of a. hard material composition on each end of the barrel, and metalscrew elcments passed through said heads into and4 in threaded engagement with said ribs of therbarrel endwise of the latter so asto clampably `at tach the heads to the barrel atsaid ends.
2. In a. spool or bobbin `construction embodying a vwholly unitary iiangeless barrel vof cylindric form anda separate hanging disc form head attached thereto, the improvement which con-- sists in the provision of the barrel by a tubular thin-wall body member comprising a strong solid material formed with a plurality of unconnected integrally formed solid longitudinal ribs on its inner side spaced circumferentially therearound and extending the full length thereof, said ribs serving to rigidify and strengtheningly reinforce the said body member and providing dennite circumferential areas of mass of the material thereof of suilicient thickness to serve for the reception of the head attaching means, said means constituting screw-like elements extended through the head into and in threaded engagement with the said ribs so vas to clampablysecu're the head at either end of the barrel.
3. In a spool or bobbin construction embodying a Wholly complete fiangeless barrel of cylindric form and a separate flanging disc form head attached thereto, the improvement which consists in the provision of the barrel by a tubular thin-Wall body member comprising a solid magnesium alloy material formed with a plurality of unconnected integrally formed solid longitudinal ribs on its inner side spaced circumferentially therearound and extending the full length thereof, said ribs serving to rigidify and strengthveningly reinforce the said body member and providing definite circumferentially disposed areas of mass of the material at the ends thereof of sufficient thickness to serve for the reception of the head attaching means thereto, the said means constituting screw-like elements extended through the head into and in threaded. engagement with the said ribs so as to clampably draw and secure the head at either end of the barrel. 4. 1n a spool or bobbin construction embodying a wholly unitary fiangeiess barrel of cylindric form and separate flanging disc form heads attached thereto at opposite ends, the improvement which consists in the provision of the barrel by a tubular thin-wall body member comprising a .strong solid material formed with a plurality of unconnected integrally formed solid longitudinai ribs on its inner side spaced circumferen-tially therearound at equal distances apart and extending the full length thereof, said ribs serving to rigidify and strengtheningly reinforce the said body member and providing predetermined` definite areas of mass of the material thereof of sufficient thickness to serve for the reception of the means attaching the heads lrel by a tubular thin-wall body member comprising a solid magnesium alloy material formed with a plurality of unconnected integrally formed solid longitudinal ribs on its inner side spaced circumferentially therearound at equal distances apart and extending the full length thereof, said ribs serving to rigidify and strengtheningly reinforce the said body member and providing deflnite circumferentlaily spaced areas of mass of the material thereof of sufficient thickness to serve for the reception of the means attaching the heads to the ends of the. same, the said means constituting screw-like elements extended through the heads into and in self-threading engagement with the said ribs so a's to clampably draw and secure the heads broadside against opposite ends of the barrel.
6. A spool or bobbin according to claim l, including a core bushing therein extending axially through the barrel with a centering peripheral fit close against the longitudinal edges of the ribs surrounding the same and providing gudgeon bearings in the opposite ends of said spool.
7. A spool or bobbin according to claim 1, including separate bushing sleeves providing gudgeon bearings in opposite ends of the spool or bobbin fastened in place along with the head at each end by the attaching screw elements passed therethrough into the ribs of the barrel, one of said bushings being formed to provide a twister attachment for the spool at one end.
