Description

Sept. 7, 1954 J, w, MCDEVITT 2,688,290
BAKERS PEEL I Filed Aug. 27, 1952 FIG. 3 A fl/wwm mm BY ML ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 7, 1954 UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE BAKERS PEEL John W. McDevitt, Davenport, Iowa Application August 27, 1952, Serial No. 306,664
The objects of my invention are to furnish for the use of bakers and housekeepers a convenient,
simple implement for removing hot pies and cakes from an oven and for cooling them without danger of burning a hand or damage to a table, shelf or other support to which they may be removed; to provide convenient means for cooling hot pies and cakes which will avoid injury to supporting surfaces.
I accomplish these objects by the means shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of my peel with the supporting bar on the left in open or raised position and with the supporting bar on the right down to act as a leg;
Figure 2 is a front elevation;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
My peel includes a flat plate A of thin metal or other suitable material, with its front edge sharpened and with its lateral edges and part of its rear edge bent up and then down to form a double flange B at both sides of the plate A.
A flat metal bar or strip is bent to form a handle I, end bars LI and side bars L2 by which the handle can carry the plate.
The side bars L2 are secured in the double flanges B by a press fit or other suitable means.
A short flat bar 8 is riveted to the strips L! at each side of the handle. The bar section Ll may be secured to the rear end of the plate A by clips l and rivets It or other suitable means.
The plate A is provided with a plurality of holes or openings I1 arranged in any convenient.
pattern and may be formed with a pressed bead I8 to stiffen it.
A semivcircular pusher 2 is formed of strip material similar to the bar I with its ends 2.l recurved backward and fitted loosely at the rear of the plate A between the flanges B. To the middl of the pusher 2 a rod 4 is fastened by a nut 3 or other suitable means. This rod 4 extends through and is slidable in a bore in the bar 8 and in a sleeve 5 in the handle, which sleeve is riveted to a short plug 5.I the outer end of which is fastened by a nut l1 threaded thereon. A clip I is fastened to the rod 4 by which manual movement of the rod along the sleeve may be facilitated.
A helical compression spring 5.2 is mounted upon the rod 4 between the sleeve 5 and the bar 8. One end of this spring bears against the clip 1 and one end against the bar 8 so that it acts 2 to return the rod 4 and the pusher 2 to their rearmost positions when the clip is released.
Side bars l2 are fastened to the lateral'flanges by rivets or bolts l3. These side bars have their ends turned outwardly as at l3.l and provided with bores in which the rebent ends of rods M are fitted. The rods [4 are placed in horizontal position as at the left of Figure 1 or turned down as at the right of Figure 1 to form legs orsupports to hold the plate A a certain distance above a table or shelf upon which it may be placed, whereby blistering of the table is avoided and the cooling of the pie or cake through the openings I! will be facilitated.
In the use of my peel a pie or cake tin with its contents may be placed on the plate A and projected into an oven by the use of the clip 7 and the pusher 2. When the baking is finished, the plate A will be inserted under the pie or cake tin with the pusher in its rearmost position. The pie or cake can then be carried to its desired resting place and discharged by the use of the clip I and pusher 2.
In the meantime, the legs [4 may be turned down so as to support the plate A spaced above the table or shelf upon which the lifter with its contents is rested until it has cooled.
The use of this lifter will avoid danger of the operator's burning his hand or fingers in removing a pie or cake from the oven or carrying it to its place of storage.
Various modifications may be made in the size, shape and material of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention as expressed in the claims and I do not limit my claims to the precise forms shown in the drawings.
I claim:
1. A kitchen utensil including a flat metal plate with its lateral edges upraised and rebent to form longitudinal double flanges, a metal lifter bar with its outer end portions fitted into the double flanges and intermediate portions bent at right angles to the outer sections and rigidly united to the rear end of said plate and with a middle portion rebent to the rear to form a handle, and supporting bars pivotally united to the flanges of the plate whereby they may be held in a common plane with the plate Or turned downwardly at right angles to form supporting legs therefor.
2. A kitchen utensil as described in claim 1, and a plurality of openings provided in the mid portion of the plate to promote cooling of its contents.
3. A kitchen utensil as described in claim 1, and a plurality of openings provided in the mid portion of the plate to promote cooling of its contents, with an upwardly projecting bead pressed in the plate surrounding the openings.
4. A kitchen utensil including a flat metal plate with its lateral edges upraised and rebent to form longitudinal double flanges, a metal lifter bar with its outer end portions fitted into the double flanges and intermediate portions bent at right angles to the outer sections and rigidly united to the rear end of said plate and with a middle portion rebent to the rear to form a ham dle; a sleeve mounted in the handle, a rod mounted in the handle and sleeve with one end slidable in the sleeve and its other end slidably mounted in a crossbar, a semi-circular pusher bar extending transversely of the plate and slidable thereon with the middle of said pusher bar rigidly united to the front end of the rod, a manually operable clip united to the rod, and means mounted upon the rod with one end bearing against said clip and its opposite end bearing against the crossbar whereby the rod and pusher attached thereto will be normally held in their rearmost position and returned thereto when released after being manually operated to move the pusher outwardly.
5. A kitchen utensil including a flat metal plate with its lateral edges upraised and rehent to form 30 longitudinal double flanges, a metal lifter bar with its outer end portions fitted into the double flanges and intermediate portions set at right angles to the outer sections and rigidly united to the rear end of said plate and with a middle portion rebent to the rear to form a handle, and an arcuate pusher bar slidably mounted upon the plate with manually operable means for moving it forwardly to discharge its contents therefrom, said pusher bar having its outer ends bent rearwardly to contact slidably with the side flanges of the plate.
