Description

(NQ Model.)
E. B. MUE'LLER. y CYLINDER GOGKFOR STEAMBNG-INES.. 110.268.815. Patented Dec. 12. 1882;.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- ERICH E. MUELLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CYLINDER-COCK FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,815, dated December- 12, 1882.
Application filed October 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concer/n..-
Be it known'that I, ERICH EDWARD MUEL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State ot' Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder-Cocks for Steam-Engines; and l do declare the following to be a clear, i'ull, and exact description otl the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to lnake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and ligu res ot' reference marked thereon, which t'orm a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of' cylinder attachments'in which cocks are employed for relieving the cylinder ofthe water of condensation, and which are automatically opened and closed by moving parts ofthe engine.
It consists in a three-Way cock connected to the cylinder by suitable pipes and adjustable mechanism for operating the same for reliev ing the cylinder of the water of condensation, all ot' which will be more particularly described in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a side view of an engine with my device attached. Fig. 2 is a View o'end of the rodthat connects the valve-lever with the pendent arm. Figs. 3,.,4, and are sectional views ofthe cock, showingthe dili'erent positions of the saine.
To cylinder B, near each end, I attach one end ot' the pipes M M, the other ends terminating in either side ot' the body of the cock L. The cock is of the ordinary plug kind, part being cut away on one side to permit ot'a discharge when registering with two ot' the ports. The body ot' the cock has three ports, one leading to each end ot' the cylinder, and a third being a discharge common to both ot' the cylinder communicating pipes. The cock L has a slotted lever, I. 1n this slot is an adjustable wrist-pin, J, to which is attached the rod H, the other end ofthe rod having a hook, h. To the cross-head A of the valve-rod D is attached, by a bolt or otherwise, the pendent arm E. This arm may be attached to any part of the engine where sut'tlcient motion can be had to oscillate the valve. In the lower part of the armE is a slot, F, having an adjustable Wrist-pin, G, similar Vto the one on the valvelever, and to which the detachable hook end ofthe rod H isattached, said end being fully shown in Fig. 2. The object ot' the slots in the arm and lever and the adjustable wristpin is to so adjust the valve that its openings will just permit the water otcondensation to escape and prevent waste of steam.
The operation is as l'ollows: Before starting the engine the rod H is disconnected from the arm E by lifting it up with the hand. The steam-valve is slightly opened to permit steam to enter the cylinder to heat the same at the same time by means ofthe rod H. The cock is opened alternately to each end of the cylinder, thereby letting out any water. Having heated the cylinder, the hook h ot' the rod H is conl nected to the arm E by the wrist-pin Gr, and the engine is started. l I i It will be readily seen from the foregoing description that motion will be imparted to the cock in proportion to the adjustment ot' the rod with the lever and arm', and that the water of condensation will be discharged automatically at ca ch stroke ot' the piston,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in a steam-engine having a single cock to relieve either end ofthe cylinder ot' water, of the lever I, rod H, adjustable pin G, slotted arm E, and the valverod D, substantially as shown vand described.
2. ln a steam-enginerhaving a single cock to relieve either end ot' the cylinder ot' water, the combination therewith ofthe slotted lever I, adjustable Wrist-pin J, rod H, having the hook h, adjustable pin G, slotted arm E, valvestem, and cross-head A, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony WhercofI affix my signature in` presence of two Witnesses.
ERICH EDWARD MUELLER.
Witnesses:
ISRAEL E. RUSSELL, ALFRED AVERY.
