The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in measuring and gauging instruments for use by carpenters and mechanics to accurately obtain the angle for cutting shelves, stair risers and treads, and for other purposes.
An important object of the invention is to provide an angle gauge wherein extensible bars with swingable arms at their outer ends are slidably held and housed in a channeled guide or case for movement inwardly and outwardly at the ends of the case for use in the manner indicated above.
Another object of the invention is to provide scales on both the case and extensible bars, as well as on the swingable arms with knurled screws or thumb nuts holding the individual parts in adjusted position.
Another object is to provide a removable clip on the channeled guide or case to support a spirit level thereon.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, efficient and dependable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the instrument in closed position;
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevational view showing the instrument in open position;
Figures 3 and 4 are enlarged transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the extensible bars.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a channel-shaped guide or case having inwardly projecting flanges 6 at its open side.
A pair of bars I are slidably supported in the guide or case '5 for inward and outward sliding movement at the ends of the guide or case and are secured in adjusted position by set screws 8 threaded in the bars to bear against the inside of the guide or case 5 by means of knurled heads 9 on the outer ends of the set screws.
The set screws 8 are positioned at the inner ends of the bars I to permit a maximum outward adjustment of the bars and set screws II] are threaded in the outer ends of the bars I and on which the inner ends of arms I I are pivotally and slidably connected by means of a longitudinal slot l2 in the arms. The set screw It is formed with a flange I3 to bind the arm II against the bar "I to hold the arm in its swingably or slidably adjusted position on the bar and the set screw I U is tightened or loosened by means of a knurled head I4.
The front and rear faces of guide or case 5 are provided with a scale I5 and scales !6 and H are likewise provided on both the front and rear surfaces of the bars I and arms II.
The inner ends of arms I i are rounded as shown at I 8 and the outer surface of the arms at their rounded ends are provided with a scale I9 to indicate degrees of the swinging adjustment of the arms.
A channel-shaped clip 20 is slidably mounted on the guide or case 5 for removal therefrom and on which is mounted a spirit level 2|.
In the operation of the instrument the bars I are slidable inwardly and outwardly at each end of the guide or case 5 and the arms I I are swingable on the outer ends of the bars to position the arms longitudinally against the bars in order that the bars and arms may be completely housed in the guide or case 5. The arms II are forwardly of bars 1, as shown in Figure 3, and by tightening set screw 8, the inner end thereof will bear against the case 5 to bind the arms I I against the flanges 6 of the case to lock both the bars I and arms II in retracted position.
When the bars I and arms H are moved outwardly of the guide or case 5, the arms are secured in adjusted position by the set screws :8 and the arms II may be swingably or slidably adjusted at the outer ends of the bars and held by the set screws Ill.
The slots I2 enable the arms I! to be adjusted transversely with respect to the bars "I by means of the slots I2 whereby desired measurement may be obtained through use of the scales.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the sameis susceptible to certain changes fully compre-.
3 hended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An angle gauge comprising a channeled case having inwardly extending opposed flanges at the front open side of the case, a pair of bars enclosed in the case and slidable inwardly and outwardly at the ends of the case, set screws threaded through the bars adjacent the inner ends of the latter and bearing against the inside of the case to force the bars forwardly in frictional binding contact behind the flanges, a second set screw threaded through each bar adjacent the outer end of the latter, an arm having a longitudinal slot therein for slidably andpivotally mounting on each 01 said second named set screws,, said arms being swingable into and out of longitudinal confronting relation with an adjacent bar for sliding either therewith or independently thereof into and out of the case, saidarms having rounded pivoted ends provided with a circular angle scale, and a flange on each of said second named set screws binding against the arms to secure the latter in. angularly adjusted position at the outer ends of the bars, said arms and said bars being extensibly adjustable at opposite ends of the case, and said arms being positioned forwardly of the bars when retracted therewith in the case to bind the arms against the flanges of the case by the tightening of the first-named set 5 screws against the rear of the case to lock both the bars and arms in the case, and said case and said bars and arms having graduated scales at their front surfaces.
