SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,674, dated December 5, 1882.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH HILL, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoining and State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam -l\luffiers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon The object of the invention which is to be hereinafter described and illustrated is to provide means whereby the sound of steam escaping from steam-engines through the smokestack to the open air may be greatly lessened, if not entirely done away with.

To the accomplishment of the above, the invention consists in 'iroviding the pipe through which the exhauststeam of the engine passes to the smoke-stack with a section of large rubberorotherfiexible hose, which serves to take up the sound of such escaping steam in its passage through said pipe.

For the better understanding of my invention, and to enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference will be made throughout the following specification to the accompanying drawing, which forms part ofsaid specification, and in which is represented a steam-boiler and suitable engines, the two having suitable pipeconnections, and the exhaust-steam passing through the lines of the boiler, all constructed and arranged as more particularly now described.

ln the drawing,Arepresents a steam-boiler, which may be of ordinary or any desired construction, the one herewith illustrated being constructed in accordance with an invention for which I have previously applied for Let ters Patent. From the dome of the boiler A live steam is carried down through a vertical pipe, to, into a bent pipe, (0, and thence to the cylinders B B of the engines to be operated. Connection is made between these cylinders B B and suitable condensers O O by means of suitable pipes, I) b, which enter atone end into said cylinder and at the others into the con- I densers,and it is through the medium of these pipes b b that the exhaust-steam is carried from cylinders B B to condensers 0 O. Afterenteringthese condensers the exhaust-steam escapes into another pipe, which is marked 0 in the drawing. At the point shown in the drawing, and marked (1, this pipe 0 is provided with my improved means for deadening the sound of the escaping steam. This deadener (Z consists of a section of large rubber or other flexible hose, which is secured firmly to the pipe 0, and, as shown, is made considerably larger in circumference than the pipe to which it is secured.

By frequent experiments I have found that as the exhaust-steam passes through my deadener (l the sound ordinarily heard is lessened to a great extent, and in some cases entirely done away with. After its passage through this deadener (l the exhaust-steam is carried to the lines of the boiler A, and by any of the wellknown means is allowed to escape to the open air.

In the foregoing I have described, and for convenience and the better understanding of my invention have illustrated, a particular course for the exhaust-steam to take in its passage from the engine-cylinders to the open air namely, into the smoke-stack; but it will be apparent to all that because of such description I do not confine myself to any particular construction or arrangement of the boiler, cylinders, or their pipe-connections.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and that for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, is

A device for deadening the sound of escaping steam, which consists in providing the steam-escape pipe between the engine and the boiler with a large section of flexible pipe, substantially as described.
