TAKE-UP FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,668, dated December 5, 1882. Application filed May 6, 1882. (No model.)
all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH R. HEBERT, ot' Brooklyn, New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Take-Ups f'or Sewing- Machines, described in this specilication and the drawings thereof.
The invention consists in improvements relating to the mechanism in connection with the needle-bar for taking up the slack in the upper thread in sewing. Figure lis a view of one form of the improvements from the inner side of the faceplate, detached from the machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig.3 is a view similar to that of Fig. 1, except 'that the needle-bar driving-pin moves in a guide.
In the form of construction shown two bosses, A B, are cast on the inner side of the face-plate C, in the recess D thereof. To the boss A is pivoted, by a screw, a, a cam-arm,E, having a cam-face, b, of the form shown, and a slot, o, at the lower end. The needle-bar F has one half of its bearings in slots d d in the ends ee ot'the face-plate, and has an inwardlyprojecting pin or driving device, f, on which there is anantifriction roll, g, to operate against the cam-face b,and give to the camarmlateral motion as the needle-bar is actuated up and down in sewing. To the boss B is pivoted, by
a screw, h, a take-up lever, G, having a pin or connection, t', to operate in slot c of the camarm E, to form a joint and receive motion from the cam-arm to operate the take-up lever, which has a thread or take-up iinger, 7c, at its upper end, extending through the slot m in the face-plate. The loose slot-and-pin con nection of the cam-arm and take-up lever is pret erably made at a point below the cam-face b ot' the cam-arm, which is engaged by the operating pin or device on the needle-bar. By connecting these parts in this manner the pint' on the take-up lever is necessarily brought so near the fulcrum of the lever and so far from the t'ulcrum of the cam-arm that a. comparatively slight movement of the cam-arm will suiiice to give the necessary movement to the take-up iinger 7c, located at the free end of the take-up lever, to enable the finger to perform its proper function. As the cam-face b ofthe cam-arm is in constant contact with its operating device on the` needle-bar, an easy and nearly-constant movement will be imparted to the take-up lever.
When the needle-bar is in operation a lateral vibrating motion is communicated to the cam` arm, which communicates a like motion to the take-up lever. The driving device on the' needle-bar causes the motion in one direction, and the spring H, fastened to the face-plate and connected to the take-up lever, causes the motion in the other direction. The take-up nger ou the upper end of the take-np lever operates or vibrates in the slot in the faceplate to take up the slack thread in. sewing. The take-up lever is arranged to project upward, and the take-up finger is near the upper end ot' the face-plate. This arrangement prevents the dripping of the lubricant upon the work.
The details of construction and operation maybe varied within the scope of the improvements. For example, the cam-arm may be provided with a cam-slot for the needle-bar driving device to operate in, as shown in Fig. 3, to give both movements to the cam-arm.
I make no claim herein to aslottedcam-arm on the inner side ot' a faceplate and projecting upward, combined with a pendent takeup lever on the outside thereof.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, in sewing mechanism, of a tace-plate, (l, having slotfm, a pendent cam-arm, E, pivqted inside thereof, and having a cam-face, b, an upwardly-projecting take-up lever, also pivoted inside the face-plate, and having a take-up fingen'k, projecting outward through the slot, the cam-arm and 'take-up lever being loosely connected below the camface, a needle-bar, F, having drivin g-pin f,
`-`Working' against the cam-face, and a retracting-spring, H, holding the cam-arm against the driving-pin, substantially as set t'orth.
2. The combinatiomadapted tosewing mechanism, ot" a faceplate, a pendent cam-arm pivoted inside the tace-plate land having a camface, an upwardly-projecting take-up lever, also pivoted inside the face-plate, and having a take-up finger projecting outward 'through a slot therein, the cam-arm and take-up lever being loosely connected below the cam-face, a needlebar having an anti-friction driving device to Work against the cam-face, and aV sys Ice
retraotingspring to hold the cam-arm against] lever being loosely connected below the operthe driving-device, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, adapted to sewing mechanism, of a face-plate having a slot, a pendent cam-arm pivoted inside the face-plate and having a cam-face, an upwardly-projecting takeup lever, also pivotcd inside the face-plate, and having atake-uptinger projecting' outward through the slot, the cam-arm and take-up lever being loosely connected below the camface,a needle-bar adapted to operate the camarrn in one direction, and a retracting-spring to operate the cam-arm in the opposite direction, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in sewing mechanism, of a. face-plate having` a slot, a pendent camarm yadapted to vibrate inside the face-plate, au upwardly-projecting take-up lever, also -adapted to vibrate inside the face-plate, and
having a `take-up finger projecting outward through the slot, 'the cam-arm and take-up ating part of the cam-arm, and a needlebar adapted to operate the cam-arm, substantially as set forth. Y
5. The combination, in sewing mechanism, of the face-plate having a slot, a cam-arm to vibrate inside the face-plate, a projecting take? up lever operated by the cam-arm, and also arranged to vibrate inside the face-plate, and. having a take-up finger projectingoutward through the slot, and a needle-bar to operate the cam-arm, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my signature and affix my seal, in the presence of two attesting Witnesses, on the 21st day ot' April, 1882.
JOSEPH R. HEBERT.
