COMBINED MEASURE AND FUNNEL.

SPECIFICATION forming part, of Letters Patent No. 268,665, dated December 5, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DEaIoK B. HARTWELL, a' citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kirkwood, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Measure and Funnel; and [do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains ure, a funnel, or the same combined.

The novelty oonsistsin the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

On the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view, showing my invention applied to ajug; and Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed .views.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

A in the drawings represents a receptacle for liquids, having its sides near the bottom inclined, the walls of its upper part being either straight or inclined, as preferred, and provided with a suitable number ofgraduations. These graduations may be formed in a metallic vessel by pressing rings upon the same, so as to form a bulge or depression on its inner surface,

as shown at a. This receptacleis provided with a lid or cover and a handle and spout, which are attached to the same in the usual manner. Secured to the bottom of the receptacle by solder or other means is a plate, B,

having a perforation, b, located under the central portion of the receptacle or measure. This plate has a perforation, I), through which passesa belt which secures the parts to each other, as will be hereinafter described. The plate B is provided at the portion surrounding the opening b with a suitable washer, c, which is attached to the under portion of the same.

By means of the bolt 0, which is provided with suitable Washer and nut, the receptacle to the funnel attachment having supportingarms F, which are attached to the disks 1), which disks or plates are of the'shape shown in Fig. 2. Attached'to this disk at its lower nel, E, which is slightly tapered. The arms F, which are curved downwardly and terminate horizontally, so as to form fiat bases, are also attached to the plate D adjacent to the funnel. This plate D is provided on its upper surface with two projecting pins or stops, d d,

By the construction and arrangement of the parts as hereinbefore described I provide a device which may be used asa measure or funnel, and which may be placed in position to reto place, and when the funnel is placed in a vessel the arms forming the base will support the same.

If desirable, this invention,being provided with a base or supporting means, may be used simply as a measure or a liquid-receptacle, and if a greater quantity of liquid than desired is drawn into the same it may be poured therefrom through a spout attached to 'the upper part of the vessel.

This invention may be used as follows All the parts being connected, as shown in Fig. 1, and the vessel A having been filled with the desired amountofliqnid, the funnel E is placed in or over the vessel to befilled, the arms resting upon the same and supporting the measure. The vessel A is then turned upon the pivot or bolt 0, so as to bring the valve B over the opening in the plate D,-'the movement being governed by the stop d. Thus a free opening is provided from the vessel A through the spout E into the vessel to be filled. By means of the plate and valve extending beyond the centerof the vessel A, and the Washers upon the bolt and around the opening in the cut-oft B, a tightjoint is secured, and when the vessel A contains liquid-its weight tends to increase further the efficacy of the washer.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by 5 Letters Patent, is-

1. A combined measure and funnel united to each other, and provided with a valve between the parts, which valve is opened and closed by the partial rotation upon a pivot of the recepro tacle or base, for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the receptacle A, having valve B, the plate D, having attached thereto spout E, and supporting-arms F, the parts being united to each other, substantially x 5 as described. 7 1

3. The graduated vessel A, having perforated base-plate B, with washer attached to its end portion, in combination with the plate D, having stops (1 d, spout E, and supportingarms F, the parts being united by a bolt with 20 washer, substantially as shown,and for the purpose set forth.
