Description

Aug. 10, 1954 L. P. DE ZELAR PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING DEVICE Filed June 25, 1952 IN VENTOR ATTORNEYJ Patented Aug. 10, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING DEVICE Louis P. De Zelar, Peoria, Ill. Application June 23, 1952, Serial No. 294,999
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to photographic printing devices and has special reference to a feeder for photographic strips.
It is a common procedure in printing from a negative or enlarging or reducing from a negative to move a positive strip step by step behind the negative. It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a simple and eificient means for moving such a strip by uniform steps past a negative or the like.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this sort having simple manual operation.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a device of this description wherein the movement of the strip past the negative is efiected by simple friction means without the use of any release or the like.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved feeder,
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the form of the invention here shown there is provided a base it of longitudinally extending rectangular form. On this base is mounted a strip support II and to the sides of this support are secured L-shaped strips 52 so positioned on the support and having inturned lips 14 at its upper edges to provide guide grooves l3. Extending upward from the rear edge portion of the base it is a pair of supports it wherein are secured the ends of a metallic rod i6. 011 this rod i6 is mounted a blade sleeve ll from which projects a plate or blade !8. Carried by the blade IS at opposite ends is a pair of spaced arms 19 and on the underside of these arms are fitted friction pads 28 of rubber or other suitable material. As illustrated on the drawing, one of the arms 19 has a handle 22 of bar-like form suitably secured thereto, the handle 22 extending from the free end of the arm to overlie the plate or blade is that carries the arm and further extends over the sleeve I! and supporting rod 16. The handle 22 is notched at its underside to clear the sleeve and rod and the end 22 thereof is adapted toengage the base [0 when the plate or blade with its arms i9 is moved to the open position illustrated by dotted lines in Figure 3 for the support thereof in such position.
It will be observed that the arms l9 and pads 20 extend transversely of the strip of film and are so spaced that, when engaged on the film, the full length of a film frame is unobstructedly exposed.
In utilizing the invention, a strip, indicated by the broken lines 2 I, is threaded through the guide groove (3. The strip is moved up until it is about flush with the right hand edge of the blade l 8 when the sleeve is resting against the left hand support 55, these supports forming stops for the longitudinal movement of the sleeve. The arms l 9 are in the raised position as shown in Figure 1 and as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3, while this insertion of the strips takes place. The arms it are turned down until the pads 23 press against the strip which may now be exposed to a suitable light projector. The exposure has been completed. The operator grasps the arms [9 and moves the sleeve until it contacts With the right hand stop 15, whereupon the arms ii? are raised by the handle 22 and the sleeve returned to its initial position. This operation is repeated until the strip has been entirely fed through the device.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction, use, and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new, is:
1. In a feeder for photographic strips, a strip supporting base having a longitudinal strip guiding lipped groove in its upper side, a rod extending along said base parallel to said groove, supports extending upwardly from said base and engaging the ends of said rod, a pair of presser arms slidable along said rod and rockingly mounted thereon, and a friction pad carried by each of said arms and engageable with a strip on said base, said presser arms and the pads carried thereby extending transversely of the strip support and being laterally spaced for a distance equal at least to the length of a frame of the film strip traversing said support.
' 2. In a feeder for photographic strips, a strip supporting base having a longitudinal strip guiding lipped groove in its upper side, a rod extending along said base parallel to said groove, supports extending upwardly from said base and engaging the ends of said rod, a pair of presser arms slidable along said rod and rockingly mounted thereon, said supports forming stops limiting the sliding movement of said arms, and a handle carried by one of the presser arms for the manipulation thereof with the end thereof adjacent its mounting adapted to engage the base for limiting opening movement of the presser arms and the support of the latter when in open position, said presser arms and the pads carried thereby extending transversely of the strip support and being laterally spaced for a distance equal at least to the length of a frame of the film strip traversing said support.
3. In a feeder for photographic strips, a strip supporting base having a longitudinal strip guiding lipped groove in its upper side, a rod extending along said base parallel to said groove, supports extending upwardly from said base and en:-
gaging the ends of said rod, a pair of presser arms slidable along said rod and rockingly mounted thereon, a friction pad carried by each arm and engageable with a strip on said base, and a handle 5 carried by one of the presser arms for the ma- 10 said presser arms and the pads carried thereby extending transversely of the strip support and being laterally spaced for a distance equal at least to the length of a frame of the film strip traversing said support.
