Description

(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES S.A BAILEY, OF WALTHAM ABBEY, COUNTY OF ESSEX, ENGLAND.
. CENTRAL-"FIRE CARTRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,601, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed April 11, 1882. (No model.) Patented in England February l, 1882, No. 496.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES STUART BAI- LEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Waltham Abbey, in the county ot' Essex, Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a new and useful Improved Central-Fire Cartridge, of which the following is a specification.
With a view to provide against escape of gas from what are known as centralre gas-tight cartridges l their cores are now usually composed ot' the following several metal and paper parts, namely: a paper tube, an inner tubelining, abase-cup, a cap-chamber, a percussioncap, an anvil, and a paper packing. The blow of the plunger of the gun is given directly onto the crown of the cap to ignite the charge, and the sides of the cap must exactly fit the capchamber to prevent escape; also the inner tubelining must exactly fit and expand with the tube or gas escapes behind it and out overthe base-cup. In practice it is found that there is an escape of gas from cartridges so made, and with hammerless guns as recently introduced such gas finds it way into the locks and breech mechanism, and after repea'ted ring the corrosive deposit from the gases is liable to be detrimental to the working of the gun.
cape ot' gases and to produce cartridges specially adapted for hammerless guns. I attain these objects by the combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, whichis an enlarged central longitudinal section of so much of a central-tire cartridge asis necessary to illustrate my invention.
I do away with the usual cylindrical inner tube-lining, and instead thereof I carry up the outer metallic cup, g, sufficiently high to give support to the paper tube a on the outside. Abouthalf an incli is a suitable height. I make this outer metallic cup to inclose the inner metallic cup and also the crown of the percussioncap, and I construct it of very thin brass-.005 inch is asuitable thickness-to offer as little resistance as possible to the plunger of the Now, my invention is designed to prevent es-4 gun, and also that it may better fulfill the requirements of a tube-lining. The end of the cup is indented around the capd to show that the cap is inits proper position. eis the anvil.
The inner iron cup, b, must be sufficiently strong to withstand the blow of the plunger without concaving or miss-tires will result. I
find that sheet-iron .013 inch thick is a suitable thickness. The edges of the cup are thinned oli' and turned over to till the bead of the finished cartridge and prevent burst rims. c is tho cap-chamber, the ange ot' which is supported by the inner cup, b, and the paper packingfl am aware that prior to my invention central-tire cartridges have been made with an inner and an outer cup inclosing a mass of'fulminate between them, and I do not claim such a combination; but
What I do claim is- 1. In a central-tire cartridge, the combination of an inner metallic cup fitti-ng and supporting;` the bead of an outer metallic cup, and a cap-chamber with tlange interposed and held by and between said metallic cups, substantially as described and illustrated.
2. In a central-tire cartridge, the combination of a cap-chamber, an anvil, an inner metallic cup sutiiciently strong to withstand the blow of a plunger, striker, or exploding-pin without concaving, a paper packing, and an outer metallic cup, said cap-chamber being constructed with a ilange interposed and held by and between said metallic cups, substantially as described and for the purpose specied.
3. In a central-tire cartridge, the combination of a paper tube, a paper packing, a flanged 4cap-chamber, with anvil and percussion-cap therein, an inner metallic cup actingn the double capacity of a support to the flanged cap-chamber and as a preventive to burst rims, and a thin outer metallic cup such as to oppose little resistance to the plunger, striker, or exploding-pin, the whole arrangement being such that said outer metallic cup incloses both the inner metallic cup and the crown of the percussion-cap, and also acts as a. support is'lin its proper position, substantially s deto the paper tube, substantially as described, scribed. e Y and for the purposes specified.Y 1
4. Ina central-fire cartridge, the combua- CHARLES STUART BAILE-Y' 5 tion, with a paper tube, acap-chamber vwith Witnesses:
