' 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to gas-burner apparatus of the type adapted for use with ordinary house-heating furnaces and more particularly to burner apparatus comprising an openended casing adapted to be positioned within the ash-pit, door-opening of'the furnace to forma conduit for secondary air and having a partssupporting platform in front of the casing. A burner apparatus of this type is disclosed in patent to Norman 2,467,626. In a burner of this type it is necessary to provide a damper for controlling the infiow of air to the furnace chamber by way of said casing and as shown in said patent it is customary to provide over the platform in front of the open-ended casing, a cover having a damper-controlled air inlet. However, in case access to certain parts under the cover should become necessary while the burner is operating, as for regulating purposes, it is obvious that removal of the cover to permit such access results in temporary loss of control of the inflow of air to the furnace chamber. The object of the present invention is to provide improvements whereby the damper is located in the casing itself so that removal of the cover will not result in loss of control of the inflow of air to the furnace chamber and to provide other improvements relating primarily to the construction and the mounting of the cover itself.
For a consideration of what is considered to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following specification and the concluding claims thereof.

Fig. l is a side elevation of the improved burner apparatus with parts in section and showing how the apparatus is applied to an ordinary househeating furnace originally designed to burn solid fuel, the upper portion of the furnace being omitted.
Fig. 2 is a view of the burner apparatus itself minus the cover which is normally disposed over the exposed parts in front of the open-ended casing, and minus certain other parts which are unnecessary to an understanding of the invention.
Fig; 3 is a view of the improved cover which is normally disposed over the parts in front of the open-ended casing.
Fig. 4 is a view taken on line 44 in Fig. 1. V Fig. 5 is a view taken on line 5-5 in Fig. 1. The burner proper of the burner apparatus is indicated at and above the same there is a flame deflector l2 mounted on an upright rod I3 coaxial with the burner. The burner It may be of any preferred type and has been shown as of the single-port type and is mounted on the upper end of an upturned extension Id of a horizontally disposed mixing tube i5 whose inlet for gas and primary air is indicated at I6.
The burner apparatus further comprises an open-ended casing l? adapted to be positioned in the ash-pit door opening of an ordinary househeating furnace l8 whose grates have been removed to permit the burner [0 to be positioned in the furnace chamber, the primary purpose of the casing being to serve as a conduit through which air must flow to enter the furnace chamber.
The floor or bottom wall of the casing IT is horizontally extended to form a parts-supporting platform 2th in front of said casing.
The mixing tube !5 is releasably mounted on the platform 20 to permit longitudinal adjustment of said tube relative to said platform, the mounting means conveniently taking the form. of a saddle 2| whereon the rear portion of the mixing tube is seated. The tube is held in place on the saddle by a releasable strap 22 and the saddle is fixedly secured to the platform. The front end of the mixing tube is a sleeve 23 telescopically received by the main body of said tube and is supported on a saddle 2 1 to which it is releasably secured by a strap 25, the saddle being fixedly secured to the platform 20. Alined with the front end of the sleeve 23 is a gas nozzle 26 for discharging a stream of gas into the mixing tube in a manner to entrain primary air.
The gas nozzle 26 is in gas-receiving connection with a plenum in head member 27. Gas under pressure is delivered to said plenum by means comprising a supply pipe 23 which delivers to a combined pressure regulator and shut-01f valve 30 which in turn delivers to said plenum by an appropriate connection 3|.
Extending through the casing ii is an elongate member 32 comprising part of a safety-pilot apparatus generally indicated at 33, the pilot burner proper being indicated at 3% and a thermal element at 35. The said safety-pilot apparatus 33 forms no part of the present invention and it suffices to say that the elongate member 32 is a housing for parts related to the same. The burner apparatus thus far described may be said to represent the environment where the improvements next to be described have special utility.
In the present invention, the means for controlling the infiow of air to the furnace chamber by way of the open-ended casing ll comprises a damper 40 within said casing, the damper being mounted on a horizontally disposed hinge 4| mounted on an upright plate 42 having an air port whose effective size is adapted to be varied by the setting of the damper. The plate 92 extends upwardly from the bottom of said casing and extends from side to side of the latter. A portion of the top of said plate 42 is cut away, the gap thus provided being the port whose effective size is to be controlled by said damper 49. A spring 43 on the hinge 4| tends to close the damper. A bracket 44 on one of the side walls of the casing carries an adjusting screw 45 adapted to abut the damper to hold the latter in the desired open position.
As best shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the air port whose effective size is to be controlled by the damper 49 is laterally extended beyond one side edge 49 of the damper to provide an opening 47 for the elongate member 32 of the pilot-burner apparatus 33, the height of the opening being such that said apparatus 33 may pass through said opening in case the apparatus must be removed from its setting adjacent the main burner 19 for replacement or repairs. The plate 42 is also provided with an opening 43 to permit the mixing tube to pass therethroimh.
A hood or cover for the exposed parts on the platform 29 is generally indicated at 50, the same comprising two side walls 52 and one end wall 53, the other end of the cover being open so that with the cover in place over said parts the space under the cover is in open communication with the front end of the open-ended casing. As best shown in Fig. and for a reason presently appearing, the distance between the two side walls 52 of said cover 50 is substantially greater than the width of the platform 29. An upright stiffening-flange 55 extends along each side edge of the platform 20. To each side wall 52 of the hood or cover 59, there are secured two brackets 56 each provided at its bottom side with an upright notch 51. By disposing the cover 50 over the platform with the bracket notches 51 straddling the respective flanges 55 on the platform, the cover is removably held in place over the platform with the bottom peripheral edge 58 of the cover 50 a substantial distance above the underside of the platform. At its front end, the open-ended casing I? has an exterior flange 60 along its top and side Walls and the cover 50 is of such height and width that it open end may extend a limited distance over said flanges. Since the cover 59 is wider than the platform 20, the space thus provided between the lower edge 58 of the cover and the side flanges 55 as the platform, permits the free entry of air into the space under the cover as will now be readily understood.
To the front end of the platform 20 there is secured a metal bar 61 through which a pair of adjusting posts 92 extend to permit leveling of the platform after the casing ll thereof has been positioned in the ash-pit door opening of the furnace, the posts being held in fixed position by set screws 63.
The top of the cover 50 comprises a removable lid fat so that the side walls 52 and end wall 53 of the cover may be formed by bending an elongate strip of sheet metal into U-shape form. As shown in Fig. 2, the combined gas-regulator and shut-off valve comprises an upstanding portion 95. A can 64 on the lid receives said portion. In cases where it is desirable to employ a control apparatus an not embodying the up- 4 standing portion 65, the removability of the lid 5| makes it easy to replace it with one not having the can '64.
Since the damper 40 for the control of secondary air is mounted within the open-ended casing H, the presence or absence of the cover 50 has no particular bearing on the operation of the burner ID but on the other hand it will be understood some kind of cover for the exposed parts on the platform 28 is a practical necessity to discourage children and others from tampering with the exposed parts or control mechanism mounted on said platform.
From the foregoing description it will now be apparent that the present invention provides a burner apparatus that is well adapted for its intended purpose.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In burner apparatus for burning gaseous fuel in a furnace chamber comprising a casing adapted for positioning in the fire door of the furnace and forming a conduit for inflow of air to the chamber, wall means in said conduit having a variable opening for inlet of secondary air therethrough to the chamber and constituting a secondary air flow control in said conduit, and a mixing tube extending through said wall means and said conduit for supplying fuel and primary air to a burner in said chamber, the improvement wherein said wall means comprises a sheet metal wall extending across a portion of the conduit and leaving an opening therethrough, a damper hingedly secured along its bottom to said sheet metal wall and adapted to substantially close said opening when in a vertical position, spring means tending to move said damper from fully open position extending toward said chamher to fully closed vertical position and adjustable stop means for holding the damper to at least a minimum opening.
2. In burner apparatus for burning gaseous fuel in a furnace chamber and comprising a casing adapted for positioning in the fire door of the furnace and forming a conduit for inflow of air to the chamber, the combination which comprises wall means in said conduit having a variable opening for inlet of secondary air therethrough to the chamber and constitutin a secondary air flow control in said conduit, and a mixing tube having its primary air inlet upstream of said wall means and extending through said wall means and said conduit for supplying fuel and primary air to a burner in said chamber.
3. The combination according to claim 2 which comprises nozzle means mounted in said casing upstream of said mixing tube for supplyin a stream of gaseous fuel thereto, said mixing tube being movable with respect to said nozzle means to adjust the inflow of primary air into the mixing tube.
