Handbags, purses, articles, have one or the invention to provide a strap tab assembly with means to overcome this characteristic.
When known types or tabs are applied to strap tially impossible to use open-face tabs, that is, tabs provided with ornamental cutouts, such as, for example, a letter of the alphabet, because all or a part of the base-flange of the stud post is visible through the cut-out.
It is, therefore, another object of the invention to provide novel means, in association with an ornamental open-faced tab, to conceal the fastener element.
Another object is to provide an open-faced tab with a removable liner to afford means for establishing color combinations and contrasts between the said .liner and tab and the strap on which the tab is mounted.
Another object is to provide a strap with an end tab embodying novel means to secure a fastener element to the strap end.
Another object is to provide a one-piece strap tab and fastener element.

provided on such article. In the present disclosure the strap I2 is provided adjacent its free end with a snap fastener element I5, which element is intended to coact with a complemental snap fastener element I6 carried on the body of the article, as shown.
The snap fastener element I5 is what is termed a stud and it consists of a stud part i1 and a stud post I8. As shown, the stud post I3 is extended through an aperture in the strap and has its base-flange I9 seated upon one face of the strap. The fastener element I6 consists of a socket-like part to frictionally receive the stud element I5.
In order to conceal the snap fastener stud element I5, and particularly the stud post bascflange I3, the tab II is of such size to over-lie and conceal the end portion of the strap carrying such snap fastener element. To this end, the tab II is fabricated from sheet stock, preferably metal, shaped to provide a front `wall 2I terminating at one end in a point 22 and having its marginal edges folded over rearwardly and then inwardly to define side flanges 23 and end anges 24. The flanges 23 and 24 normally are spaced a sufcient distance in back of the front wall 2i to permit easy insertion of the strap end I2 during assembly. After the tab has been slipped over Vthe strap end, pressure is applied in any conventional manner so as to press the flanges 23 and 24 into clinching engagement with the back surface of the strap end I2. This clinching of the flanges firmly secures the tab in place and affords means whereby the external appearance of the tab is unmarred by any visible attaching elements.
It has been found that when a tab, such as the one shown at II, is mounted upon a strap end carrying a fastener element I5, there is a tendency for the outline of the fastener element baseflange I9 to become visible on the front wall I1. This arises because of the pressure applied to the tab during the attaching operation. As a consequence, the ornamental value of a highly polished tab is spoiled. This tendency maybe Aovercome in the present instance by providing a wafer-like sheet metal insert 25 which is of such size and shape as to fit freely within the confines of the tab II between the front face of the strap I2 and the back face of the tab wall I1. Such an insert affords means to absorb any deformation which might otherwise appear in the front wall I1 were such insert not present. As aresult, the front wall I1 retains an unmarred appearance.
It should be observed also that the front wall I1 of the tab II, illustrated in Figs. l through 5, may be provided with an ornamental cut-out, such as the letter A, indicated at 26. When such a cut-out is provided in the tab wall, the
Consequently, the insert 25 may be provided with a surface finish contrasting with the surface finish of the tab II and/or strap I2, thus permitting a wide variety of color combinations with a minimum substitution of parts. The provision of such cut-outs, as at 26, in tabs has heretofore been impractical because without the insert 25 of the present invention the unsightly baseflange I9 of the fastener element I5 would be visible in whole or in part through such cut-outs.
.In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and '1, the tab I I may be constructed like that shown in Figs. l through 5 and like numerals are used to identify corresponding parts thereof. In this embodiment the snap fastener element, shown as a stud 21, is formed integral with a plate 28 which is of such size and shape as to be insertable within the tab II. It should be noted that the plate 28 is located between the back face of the strap I2 and the tab flanges 23 and 24, thus locating the stud 21 on the back face of the strap. This two-piece assembly is particularly advantageous because it avoids the need for initially securing the stud element in the strap end and subsequently mounting the tab, with or without an insert, thereon.
With further reference to the disclosure in Figs. 6 and '7, it should be observed that the tab and its insert, which in this instance carries the stud 21, may be loosely assembled and the assembly slipped over the strap I2. When clinching pressure is applied to the flanges 23 and 24, such flanges engage both the plate insert 28 and the strap I2, thus iixedly securing the insert in place vand afflxing the tab on the strap end.
The embodiment of the tab shown in Figs. 8 through 13 is somewhat like that shown in Figs. 6 and 7 except that in this instance the tab body and insert are fabricated from a single piece of sheet material. Upon referring specifically to Figs. 9 and 13, it will be noted that the tab 3I includes a front wall portion 32, marginal flange portions 33 and 34, and a plate 35 carrying a fastener element 36. The fastener elementcarrying plate 35 is integrally attached along one When the tab is formed as in the manner best illustrated in Fig. l2, the marginal flanges 33 and 34 are rolled rearwardly from the front wall 32 and then inwardly, as shown. The fastener element-carrying plate 35 is thus located substantially parallel to 1out spaced rearwardly from the front wall 32. The free edge margin 31 of said plate 35 is located in underlying relation to the free margin of the opposed flange 33. The tab is now ready to be mounted upon a strap end. When the strap is extended into the tab 3I pressure is applied as before on the flanges 33 and 34 so as to cause said flanges to be squeezed or clinched firmly against the back face of the strap. When this is accomplished, the fastener element-carrying plate 35 is located in close binding relationship to the strap and its free edge is firmly held by the overlying clinched edge of the complemental flange 33, as best shown in Fig. l1.
Figs. 14 and 15 illustrate another type of one piece tab and snap fastener element. As shown,
. the tab 33 includes a front wall 39 and side and end marginal flanges 4I. In the present instance the flanges 4I are unbroken as distinguished from the broken or slit flanges on the tabs described hereinabove. It should be understood,
. however, that the flanges on either type of tab illustrated may be broken or unbroken as desired. A portion of the front wall 39 is oli-set rearwardly, as best illustrated in Fig. 15, to define a back wall i2 preferably having a fastener stud or other element I3 integral therewith. The offsetting of the baci: wall 42 leaves an opening 44 in the front wall through which the strap I2 may be viewed or which may be backed by an insert of the kind shown in the Fig. 1 disclosure.
Although several embodiments of the invention have been disclosed in the accompanying drawings and have been described in detail in the foregoing specification, it should be understood that the invention may embody a variety of modifications in details of construction with out departing from the spirit of the invention side edge flanges and the extending portions of or the scope of the appended claim. i
