FIRE-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,295, dated November 28, 1882. Application filed March 7,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LYMAN H. ZEIGLER, of Redkey, in the county of Jay and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved FireEngiue, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in a pump pivoted in a frame mounted on a lJ-shaped axle supported on wheels, which frame is provided IO with a draft-pole, whereby the axle can be swung upward, so that the pump and frame will be raised during transportation; or the axlecan be swung downward, so that the frame rests on the ground and forms a firm bearing for the pump during operation. The frame is provided with a tongue or pole for pulling or pushing the engine, and with pivoted braces for locking the parts in position when the axle is raised.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal-elevation of my improved fire-engine, showing it raised for transportation, parts being broken out. Fig.
2 is a longitudinal elevation of the pump-cylinder of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of my improved fire-engine on the 0 line x at, Fig. 1, showing it lowered for operation.
The ends of a U-shaped axle, A, are journaled in the hubs of two wheels,B, of the usual construction. The cross-piece of the U-shaped 3 5 axle A is also journaled in the base of a frame, 0, to which frame a draft-pole or tongue, D, is attached, which is at right angles to the axle, and is provided at the ends with handles a or other equivalent devices for holding the pole or tongue D to pull or push the wheels and frame 0. A brace-bar, E, is pivoted on the axle next to the frame 0, and is provided at its free end with a hook, F, fitting in a staple or loop, G, on the pole or tongue 1); or the 4 5 brace-bar can be provided with other devices for lockin git to the pole ortongue D. A brace, H, ,is pivoted on the axle A adjoining one of the wheel-hubs, and to the brace-bar E near the end of the same. Acylinder, J, is pivoted in the frame 0 to adapt it to be oscillated, and this cylinder is provided at the bottom with a valve-box, K, divided into two compartments, K, by a partition, I), each compartment containing a valve, L. This valve-box K is connected with the suction-pipe M. A valve-box, N, provided with an air chamber, O, is located on the top of the cylinder J, and contains two valves, 1. This valve-chamber N is connected with the delivery-pipe Q. The cylinder J, which may be open or closed at the ends, is divided into two compartments by a central transverse partition, R, containing a packing, R, for the piston-rod S, passing longitudinallythrough the cylinder. is rigidly mounted on the rod S at each side of the transverse partition B. One end of the piston-rod S is pivoted to a beam, V, pivoted on the top of the frame in the direction of the length of the tongue D,-which beam is provided at the ends with handles W and trans- 7o verse rods Y, or equivalents.
The operation is as follows: During transportation of the engine the axle A is raised, so that the bottom of the frame 0 will be as high as the upper parts of the wheels, the axle 7 5 being locked in this position by means of the brace E. The tongue or pole D can then be used to pull or push the engine. If the engine is to be used,the end of the braceE is detached from the pole or tongue D, and the axle A is swung one hundred and eighty degrees-that is, it is swung downward, so that the pole 1) rests on the ground and forms a good bearing for the engine, and holds the same in place during operation. The length of the shanks of the U-shaped axleAis such that when the axle is swung downward the pole or tongueD will rest on the ground. By working the beam V up and down the piston-rod S will be reciprocated, and the pump will operatein the same manner as the usual double-acting pumps. The working of the beam V causes an oscillation of the cylinder, and for that purpose I pivot the cylinder in the frame 0.
The herein-described fire-engine is very sim- 5 ple in construction, is very light, can be transported very easily, and stands firmly during operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 103 Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a pump and its scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, witli'a pump, of the pump-frame O, the pole or tongue D, the U- shaped axle A, the wheels B, the brace E H,
and the pivoted beam V for operating the pump, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a fire-engine, the combination, with the supporting-frame U, of the cylinder J, pivoted therein, the pistons T, the piston-rod S, the lever V, the valve-boxes K and N, the suctiontube M, and thedelivery-tube Q, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
