Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT C. BABCCCK, OE NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPRovr-:D CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 26,824, dated .Ianuary 17, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. BABCOCK, ofthe city and county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Operating Curtains for Ooacl1Doors, 85e., as a new article ot' manufacture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction, character, and operation of the same, reference being had to thel accom pauying drawing, which makes part ot' this specication, which drawing represents a cur` tain and its appendages for a coach-door, tte., as attached.
My improvement consists in the method of so connecting an india-rubber spring to the curtain-roller that the curtain may be drawn down when desired, and detained in any desired position by the ratchet attachment, and be rolled up by the spring when desired.
I make the coach door or frame A A in any of the usual ways or forms for attaching curtains by rollers.
I make the roller for the curtain of a solid rod or a tube, as I tind most convenient, as indicated at B. On one end ot' this roller B, I tix a ratchet-wheel, as shown a't c, in which ,I use a ratchet, as shown at d, to secure the curtain at the desired height at any time, and at the other end I tix arpulley, as shown at e, to enable the spring to act ou the roller to roll up the curtain when the ratchet is released.
I make the curtain E of any suitable niaterial, and attach it to the roller B in any convenient way.
I attach the roller B to the frame by suitable knobs or studs at a and b.
I use an elastic india-rubber spring, as shown atC, one end of which I attach hy aclasp, asatg, or by any other convenient means, and carry the other end over an anti-friction roller, as at It, and secure it to the pulley c.
Havin g made the several paris and connected them, as before described, (the curtain being tted to roll up on the side of the roller next to the coach-door, and its lower edge steadied by cords, as at l and 1,) if I wish to draw the curtain down I do so by means of the tassel D, (as the'ratchet (Z will allow the roller B to revolve in that direction,) when the spring C will be wound around the pulley e, (its elasticity allowing ot' sncient expansiom) and the ratchetv d will detain the roller B in the desired position 5 and if I wish the curtain roller up I trip the ratchet d by means of the tassel E, when the spring C will by its contraction revolve the roller B and roll up the curtain. the curtain.
I am aware that curtains have been rolled up by metallic springs in various ways, and that india-rubber springs have been used for many purposes, and that the ratchet attachment has long been used on curtains. I therefore do not claim either of these, as such, as my invention; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the long india-rubber spring C' withthe curtain-roller B and its appendages, when the whole is constructed, arranged, and made to operate substantially as herein described and set forth.
ALBERT C. BABCOCK.
