This invention relates `to a range broiler and more particularly and specifically to an improved swing-out broiler. y
In the past it has been quite common practice to provide ranges with so-called pull-out broilers which broadly comprise broiler pan carriages which upon the opening of the broiler door are or can be pulled front end first outwardly from the broiling compartment or in some instances comprise carriages which are in the form of a drawer, the front end of which is the closure door for the broiling chamber, so that when the door is opened the drawer is pulled outwardly thus exposing the broiler pan.
The present invention has as its primary object the provision of a novel broiler arrangement wherein the carriage for the broiler pan is pivotally supported to swing Vin a horizontal plane and upon the opening of the broiler compartment door the carriage is swung outwardly through the broiler door opening to conveniently position the broiler pan to the range operator.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a swing-out broiler in which the broiler pan carriage or rack is quickly detachably pivotally connected to the range.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a swing-out broiler constructed in a manner making it adaptable for attachment to or inclusion with ranges already made and in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a swing-out broiler Which is comparatively cheap to fabricate, easy to clean and more convenient in use than broilers of a similar type now in use.
Other objects, novel features of construction and improved results obtained by the practice and use of the invention will appear from the hereinafter following description when read in the light of the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 1 is a front perspective View of a range embodying the improved broiler, the broiler being illustrated in its swung-out position.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the broiling compartment of the range, the broiler pan and carriage being shown in a retracted position and Wholly within the broiler chamber.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View, from front to rear, through the broiling compartment of the range, the broiler pan carriage being illustrated in full lines.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective View of 2 the front Ibroiler compartment portion of the range with the broiler compartment door open and the manner of attachment and detachment of the broiler pan carriage being illustrated.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the broiler compartment end of a range illustrating the improved swing-out broiler as used in a range having a low broiler compartmentrather than a high broiler compartment as the range illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary-vertical sectional View, from front to rear, through the broiler compartment of the range illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Broilers broadly similar to the present invention are disclosed in the A. Stockstrom et al. Patent 2,027,124 and applicants Patent 2,296,140 but the' present broiler has features of advantage over the broilers of those patents. The present broiler is a unit separate and .apart from the broiler compartment door which is not the case in the Stockstrom etal. device. The separate unit construction has been found cheaper to fabricate and being removable from the broiler chamber the unit can be conveniently cleaned.
Additionally the separate lunit arrangement makes the device one which can be adapted or added to ranges now in use. Although applicants prior patent does, in a sense, disclose a broiler which is a separate unit from the door of the broiler compartment the construction of the patented device is one much more costly to fabricate and one which, comparative to the present broiler, is much more difficult to remove from the broiler compartment for cleaning.
In Figs. l to 4 inclusive the present improved broiler is illustrated in combination with a socalled high broiler compartment or a broiler compartrnent which is heated by a burner individually provided for the compartment and which is not utilized, as is the case in the modified form `of the invention later to be described, for pro- ,oven D at one end of the range and an adjacently positioned broiling compartment E at the other end of the range with storage drawers F and G below the baking oven and broiling compartment respectively.
Specifically the broiling compartment diifers in no respect from a conventional range broiling compartment and is provided at its front end with a conventional door H mounted on an upper hinge I and a similar lower hinge Ia for swinging movement in a horizontal plane from closed to open positions.
The broiler comprises a carriage or rack J and a broiler pan K.
Specifically the carriage comprises a side wall 2 and a rear wall 3 joined together by a diagonally extending corner wall or piece 4. A plurality of pan supporting pins 5 are arranged in spaced apart vertical alignment on the inner face of the carriage side wall 2 and a similar set of pins 6 is carried on the inner face ofthe carriage rear wall 3. The carriage corner wall piece is provided with a plurality of horizontally-extending slots 'I arranged in spaced apart vertical relationship with a slot in alignment with each horrizontal line of pins 5 and 5.
The front 8 of the range which frames the opening into the broiling compartment is turned inwardly and rearwardly as at 9 and a pair of hinge leaves IB and I I are secured to the flange '9 in spaced apart vertical relationship and are provided with upwardly extending pintles or spindles I2 and I3. A pair of hinge leaves I4 and I5 are suitably secured to the side wall 2 of the carriage J in vertical spaced apart relationship and are provided with pintle or spindle receiving eyes or tubes I6 and I 'I. By means of this arrangement the carriage is quickly attachable and detachable in respect to the hinge pintles which support the carriage for rotative swinging movement in a horizontal plane.
In operation the broiler pan carriage is attached to the inner face of the door H so that as the door is opened and closed the broiler ,pan is pulled from and returned into the broiling `compartment. This attachment is through the medium of the door carried plate I8 provided with a U-shaped channel piece I9 adapted to receive the lower edge of the carriage side wall 2.
In normal operation the parts, with the door open, assume the positions illustrated in Fig. v1 of the drawings but by an extreme outward opening movement of the door the channel I9 can be carried beyond the front end or edge 2I of the carriage sidewall 2 so that the connection between these parts is broken. Thereupon the carriage can be, by a lifting movement, sufficiently elevated to disconnect its hinge leaves from the hinged pintles.
The broiler pan K is specically composed of two pieces one of which is a pan 22 in which a food supporting plate 23 is suitably removably supported. The upper edge of the pan 22 is bent outwardly and downwardly to provide a circumferential depending flange 24 which is in spaced relationship to the outer circumferential wall of the pan. This construction provides a groove or channel-way 25 for the reception of the broiler pan supporting pins 5 and 6 and when the pan is in operative position on the carriage the inner corner 25 of the pan extends through the proper aligned slot 'I of the carriage corner wall 4.
The carriage supporting pins and broiler pan reception slots provide a means whereby the food supporting plate of the pan is selectively adjustable toward and away from the broiler burner L.
Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings illustrate the invention as utilized in connection with a range having a low broiler compartment. Here the broiler compartment M is positioned beneath the f Number baking or cooking oven N of the range. The two compartments are separated by a plate 29 which serves as the bottom of the baking oven and as the top of the broiler compartment. The cooking heat for both the broiler and baking ovens is furnished by a single burner O positioned in the top of the broiling compartment immediately beneath the plate 29.
structurally the swing-out broiler for a low broiler compartment differs in no respect from the construction heretofore described/ with the exception that a slightly different arrangement is illustrated for connecting the broiler pan carriage to the broiler compartment door P. Accordingly similar reference characters and numerals appear in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings to those previously used with the exception of those utilized in specically describing the aforereferred to specifically different manner of providing for connection and disconnection between the broiler compartment door and the carriage.
An L-shaped lock or fastener Q has a horizontally disposed shaft portion 30 extending through and rotatably mounted in lthe door P. At its inner end the fastener is provided with an upwardly extending arm or leg 3I which optionally can be positioned behind the side wall 2 of the carriage or by rotation moved downwardly'out'of engagement with the carriage by manual rotation of the shaft 3D by the yhand wheel or knob 32 provided on the exterior end of the shaft. lA coil spring or other suitable tension means 33 4will retain Ythe latch in its manually set position. Obviously the latch Q could be utilized, if desired, in connection with the swing-out broiler illustrated in the high broiler arrangement illustrated lin Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings.
`Specific `departures from the precise constructions illustrated and described can be made without departing from the inventive concept and the invention is accordingly to be limited only Withinthe scope of the hereinafter following claim.
What I claim is:
lIn a range, a broiling'coxnpartment, a horizontally swinging door providing access to the compartment, a carriage in the compartment mounted for yswinging movement in a horizontal plane, means interconnecting the carriage and the door, the carriage comprising a pair of Vertical walls extending at right angles to-one another and interconnected by an obliquely extending end wall, a plurality of vertically spaced rows of supports on the two first mentioned walls or the carriage,v
the end wall of the carriage being provided with a plurality of horizontally extending slots in spaced vertical relationship one each of which is in alignment with a row of the supports, a broiling pan selectively positionable on said supports and a corner of said pan extending through one of said carriage end wall slots.
