Description

J. H. FRENCH,`
FIRE KINDLER.
(Nb Model.)
Patented Nov. 28, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. FRENCH, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 268,215, dated November 28, 1882.
Application filed September 7, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. FRENCH, of' Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State ot' Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Kindlers and Means for Protectingthe Same; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use .the same, reference being hadto theaccompanyingdrawing, which form a part of this specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a neat merchantable package for tire-kindlers and similaroilsaturated articles, to be removed when the articles are useda package that will proved re-kindler package hereinafter spe-l ciiically described.
vThe article to be packed, having been saturated in an)7 well-known way with the volatile oil,is firmly wrapped with paper or the like, and the exterior ofthe package thus formed is then varnished with a composition of glue and bichromate of pot-ash. The proportions that I 'prefer for this compound varnish are about as follows: one pound of glue to two ounces of (No model.)
bichromate of potash, although these proportions may be very considerably varied. The glue and bichroinate of porash may be dissolved separately and the solution mixed, or may be dissolved together. The package so varnished with this bichromatized glue I nd to be an improvement upon a package varnished with glue alone, for while retaining the goed qualities ofthe latter the varnish has more of a glassy consistency and is less susceptible to the action 0f moisture and heat.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the application ot' my improvement to a package ofoil-soaked tire kndlers, the varnish having been applied to the exterior of the wrapper, as
indicated by the shading lines.
I do not cla-iin what has been secured to lne in Letters Patent granted me June 21,11881, nor what I have described and claimed in my pending applications filed May ll, 1882, and September 7, 1882.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As au article of manufacture, a package of wood or other suitablematerial saturated with an inliammable oil, and having a wrapper coated with a composition of glue and bichromate ot potash, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JAMES H. FRENCH.
