This invention relates to marking gauges, and more particularly to an improved device for marking spaced intervals on fabric in making hems, borders, ruflies, pleats and the like in sewing.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved sewing marking device which is simple in construction, which is easy to use, and may be employed with different colored marking means, such as inked tapes or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved sewing marking device for marking predetermined desired intervals on cloth or fabric, as required in spacing stitching for hems, borders, ruffles, pleats and the like, the improved device being inexpensive to manufacture, being sturdy in construction, being compact in size and light in weight.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an improved sewing marking device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the sewing marking device of Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal cross sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the sewing marking device is designated generally at H and comprises an elongated channel-shaped supporting bar 62 having the depending side flanges l3 and Hi. The web of the channel bar I2 is designated at It and is formed with an elongated slot i6 extending for the major portion of the length of the bar l2. The side flanges l3 and it are formed with opposing, elongated longitudinal slots IT and [8 located adjacent the web l of the bar l2. Designated at I9 and 25] are respective, transverse spool shafts which are rotatably mounted in the opposite end portions of the flanges l3 and Hi, said shafts being diametrically slotted at their ends, as shown at 2| and 22. Secured to the flange 13 adjacent the respective slotted ends of the shafts I9 and are the respective resilient locking springs 23 and 24, said springs having locking end portions 25 which are engageable in the slots of the shafts l9 and 20 to releasably secure said shafts against rotation.
Designated at 29 is a spool of colored inking tape having its respective ends wound on the respective spool shafts I9 and 20, as shown in Figure 4, whereby the tape 29 is stretched cc-- tween the shafts and extends longitudinally in the bar [2. Designated at 30 and 3! are respective sleeve members which extend vertically through the slot It and which are provided with the transversely extending supporting portions 32 and 33 which extend slidably through the slots I! and I8 and are formed at their ends with downwardly bent flanges 34 for retaining the transverse supporting elements 32 in said slots El and 8. The sleeve members 30 and 3! are thus slidably supported for longitudinal adjustment in the slot 16.
The sleeves til and 3| are formed with the centrally apertured bottom walls 35 and 36, and slidably mounted in each sleeve member is a vertical plunger 3'! formed with a reduced, depending marking point 38 which extends slidably through the central aperture in the bottom wall of the associated sleeve member. Surrounding the reduced point 38 is a coiled spring 40 which bears between the main portion of the plunger and the bottom wall of the associated sleeve element, biasing the plunger upwardly.
Designated at 39 is a longitudinally extending rod member which is arranged parallel to the bar [2 and is slidably supported on respective vertical bolts ll and 42 secured to the respective end portions of the web iii of bar member it. As shown in Figure 4, the vertical bolts ii and 42 extend through openings provided in the opposite ends of the rod 39 and are provided at their top ends with the retaining nuts 43 and 44 which limit the upward movement of the rod 39 relative to the bar member l2. The top ends of the respective plungers 31 are formed with the arcuate'saddle elements 45 which engage the rod 39 and maintain said rod 39 in an elevated position, by the biasing force exerted on the plungers 31 by the springs 40.
A suitable linear scale 46 may be provided on the longitudinal margin of the top surface of bar 12, and along the upper portion of the side flanges thereof, as shown at 4?, whereby the spacing between the sleeve members 39 and El may be adjusted to any desired value.
As shown in Figure 4, the marking points 38 are located above the marking tape 29, and by depressing the rod 39, the points it may be forced downwardly onto the marking tape 29, whereby a pair of spaced marks will be made on a piece of fabric or other material to be marked disposed beneath the bar l2. Thus, the device may be set to provide a predetermined distance between the marking points and then may be employed to rapidly mark a series of spaced points on a piece of fabric or the like, or for locating the stitching required in making hems, borders, rufiles, pleats, and the lik Any desired color of markingtape 29 may be employed, the tape being readily removable by disengaging the detent elements 25 of the springs 23 and 24 from the slots 2| and 22, whereby the spool shafts l9 and 20 may be freely wound or unwound.
While a specific embodiment of an improved sewing marking device has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A sewing markin device for use in markin spaced points in sewing comprisin an elongated channel-shaped supporting bar, respective spools rotatably mounted between the flanges of the bar at its respective end portions, a marking ribbon wound on said spools and extending longitudinally in the bar, a rod member extending parallel to said bar, means slidably supporting said rod member for movement toward the bar and including means limiting movement of the rod member away from the bar, a pair of sleeve members slidably mounted on the bar over said marking ribbon, respective plunger members in said sleeve members, respective depending marking points on said plunger members engageable on said marking ribbon, spring means biasing said points away from the ribbon, and abutment means on the plunger members slidably engaging said rod member.

A sewing marking device for use in marking spaced points in sewing comprising an elongated channel-shaped supporting bar, respective spools rotatably mounted between the flanges of the bar at its respective end portions, a markin ribbon wound on said spools and extending longitudinally in the bar, a rod member extending parallel to said bar, means slidably supporting said rod member for movement toward the bar and including means limiting movement of the rod member away from the bar, said bar being formed with a longitudinal slot in its top Wall, a pair of sleeve members slidably mounted on the bar over said marking ribbon and extending through said slot, respective plunger members in said sleeve members, respective depending marking points on said plunger members engageable on said marking ribbon, spring means biasing said points away from the ribbon, and abutment means on the plunger members slidably engaging said rod member.
3. A sewing marking device for use in marking spaced points in sewing comprising an elongated channel-shaped supporting bar, respective spools rotatably mounted between the flanges of the bar at. its respective end portions, a marking ribbon wound on said spools and extending longitudinally in the bar, a rod member extending parallel to said bar, means slidably supporting said rod member for movement toward the bar and including means limiting movement of the rod member away from the bar, said bar being formed with a longitudinal slot in its top wall, a pair of sleeve members, said flanges being formed with longitudinal slots, means on said sleeve members extending through said last-named slots slidably supporting the sleeve members on the bar over said marking ribbon, said sleeve members extending upwardly through said firstnamed slot, respective plunger members in said sleeve members, respective depending marking points on said plunger members engageable on said marking ribbon, spring means biasing said points away from the ribbon, and abutment means on the plunger members slidably engagme said rod member.
