This invention has reference to play pens and particularly to improved means for detachably mounting canopies on such devices.

Plan pens, as ordinarily constructed, are rectangular in shape and the four side members thereof are generally fitted with hinges in all four corners. The end panels of the pens are in such cases made in one piece, whereas the side panels are vertically divided through the center and fitted with elements for locking the parts together. In other types of play pens the dividing lines are placed in opposite corners of the pen.

It is in view of the foregoing the general object of this invention to provide a canopy fitted with attaching elements adapted for use on both of the above named types of play pens. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations hereinafter fully described and reference is invited to the accompanying drawings in which preferred forms of the invention are illustrated. In the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a play pen to which is shown attached a canopy embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 shows a portion of a play pen of different construction to which the attachment elements of the invention are shown applied;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view on a larger scale illustrating the improved method of attaching the device of the invention to the form of play pen shown in Fig. 1; I

Fig. 4 is a substantially corresponding view showing the device attached to the style of play pen illustrated in Fig. 2; and

Fig. 5 is an end view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

In the combination of Fig. 1, the upright members of the play pen are conventionally tied together at the corners thereof by means of hinges A and the side members are divided at the vertical centers thereof into panels M, N, as indicated at B. The elements by means of which these divided side members are fastened together ordinarily include a latch C pivoted at one end thereof on a stud D of the top rail G of one of the panels and having .at the other end thereof a notch E engaging a stud F of the top rail of the other panel of the pen. The device of the invention comprises a plate I, which is adapted to be placed in position on the pen behind this latch in the manner which will be described presently. Supporting members 2, 3 are at the ends thereof pivotally secured to the plates I and they are bent to provide cross-members 2, 3 which extend through hems 4, 5 of the canopy 6. Studs I are mounted in the cross-braces H, I at the top of the end members of the pen and the canopy is, at one end thereof, extended to provide a flap 9 in the outer hem of which eyelets It are seated for engagement with the studs I to lock this end of the canopy in position on the pen. Suitable means such as a cord I2 extends from the opposite end of the canopy to the upper cross-brace H at the other end of the pen to which it is tied or otherwise suitably fastened. It should from the foregoing description be clear that the flap 9 may be attached to either end of the pen. I wish it understood, also, that a fiap 9 may be extended from both ends of the canopy portion 6, if preferred.

As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the plate I is near the bottom thereof shown fitted with two notches I4, I5, one of which is sunk horizontally into the side edge of the plate near the bottom thereof and the other is shown vertically rising from the bottom edge of the plate. These notches are so arranged and spaced apart that they can be brought into engagement with the pivot D and the stud F of the pen to take a position behind the latches C which for this purpose by adjustment of these studs is withdrawn sufficiently from the side member of the pen to make room for the plate. In order to place the canopy in position, is is merely required to cause the groove I4 of the plate to engage the stud F and then to swing the plate downward until the groove I5 engages the pivot D. In order to facilitate this operation and so as to be able to lock the plate rigidly in position, I have shown wing nuts I5 applied to the ends of the stud and pivot, a slight rotation whereof will suifice to clamp the plate in position on the play pen.

As above stated, the device of my invention is also adapted for use on play pens having onepiece side members and the plate I of the device is for this purpose shown fitted with a bracket 23 which by means of a bolt 2! is secured in position on the plate. The lower end of this bracket is shaped snugly to fit about the upper rail memher 0 of the pen, substantially as indicated in Fig. 5. It may be found advantageous to mount this bracket adjustably in position on the plate and it is, for this reason at 23 shown fitted with an elongated perforation through which the stud 2| extends. A wing nut 24 is applied to the end of the stud to lock the bracket in adjusted position on the plate.

While I have, in the drawings, shown the canopy supported by the two braces 2 and 3, I wish it understood that additional braces may be employed or that, in some cases, it may be found preferable only to employ one such brace. It is further to be understood that while I have, in Fig. 1, shown the flap 9 of the canopy tied to the upper rail of the pen at one end thereof, it is possible to reverse the canopy on the pen and to attach the flap to studs 1 at the opposite end of the pen as above described. In addition, I wish to state that such further modifications as will come. within the scope of the claim hereto appended may be embodied without affecting the principle of the operation of the device.
