This invention relates to an improved hook: less slide fastener of the type which the slide a b adjusted to e ax t e ten n exer e by the slide upon the fasteners whereby to permit the clearing of an obstruction.
This invention is a continuation-impart of my prior application for Hookless Slide Fastener and M qd of M k am fi ed D embe 9%;), Serial No. 130,409, now matured into Patent No. 2,67 1, 258, dated March 9, 1954.
In said prior application, I described. a slide for hookless fasteners, said slide haying longitndinal top and bottom walls which were connected at their rear ends by a resilient transverse yoke. A transverse pin was turnably connected to the bottom wall and extended turnably through an opening in the top wall, said pin having an enlarged head above said top wall. This head had a pair of diametrically opposed grooves in its lower face. I provided a pl ll member which d at ts lower s in a exten n an; le s which were positioned between said head and said top wall and which were respectively partly located within respective grooves These lngs were operative in one turned position of said pin to force the walls more closely tggetherthan in another turned position of said pin.
I have now discovered that it is highly advantageous to eliminate the grooves in the head of the pin and to provide instead an annular washer which is mounted on the pin between its head and the top wall. This washer has diametrically opposed slots into which the lugs respectively extend. I prefer to fix the pin with respect to the bottom wall and instead to make the washer turnable with respect to the pin to permit tnrning of the pull tab. This results in greater accnracy and economy in manufacture of the slide and fewer rejected slides during the course of manufacture.
Other Objects and advantages of the inven: tion will become apparent from the following description, in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which a preferred embodiment is disclosed.

The body of the slide is made by bending a planar blank of sheet metal to provide a bottom longitudinal wall I and a top longitudinal wall 2, which are integral with a resilient rear yoke 3. This resilient yoke 3 biases the walls I and 2 to the clearance or release position of Fig. 4, in which top wall 2 is inclined to bottom wall I The walls I and 2 are provided with the usual front parallel transverse flanges F and with the usual rearwardly divergent transverse flanges Fa. Each wall I and 2 has a pair of front parallel flanges F and a pair of rearwardly divergent flanges Fa.
The hookless fasteners are not shown because they are well-known. These hookless fasteners are attached in respective longitudinal rows to longitudinal stringers or longitudinal adjacent portions of the fabric of the garment or other article, in the well-known manner.
When the slide is moved rearwardly, the rearwardly divergent flanges Fa interlock the hookless fasteners in the well-known manner, and the parallel flanges F operate as guides in the wellknown manner.
The transverse pin P has a cylindrical head 4, and a cylindrical shank 6 which is integral with head 4. Said cylindrical shank 3 has a. reduced and integral cylindrical extension "I.
The washer 25 is substantially in the shape of an annular ring, with a central through-andthrough opening 28. Washer 25 is provided with two diametrically opposed slots 2i, each of which extends diametrically inwardly from the rim of washer 25. Optionally, the side walls of each slot 21 are parallel to each other and are transverse to the end faces of washer 25, and the inner wall of each slot 2'1 is transverse to the side walls thereof, as well as to the end faces of washer 25.
The pull member 8 has a body of planar shape, which has a hole 9. Said body 8a has a pair of spaced legs 5 at one end thereof, and
assume said legs 5 respectively are provided at their free ends with inwardly laterally extending lugs H3. These lugs iii are alined with each other and are adapted to interfit respectively with respective slots 21. Optionally, as is clearly shown in Fig. 7, each said lug is substantially square in cross-section, except that its lateral edge portions are rounded. Slots 2'! and lugs is may have any suitable cooperating shapes.
Said pull member 8 optionally has an integral locking prong H, which may be omitted.
As shown in Fig. 2, the top longitudinal wall 2 has a hole or bore i2; a longitudinally and rearwardly tapered recess i4 which is longitudinally disposed and located rearwardly of bore 2; a longitudinally and rearwardly tapered recess 55 which is longitudinally disposed and located forwardly of bore 52; and lateral recesses i6 and I! and a hole or cut-out 18 which is adjacent recess ll.
The front recess i5 is deeper than rear recess it. The longitudinal recesses Hi and it have a common longitudinal axis which intersects the center of bore 52. The lateral recesses iii and I? are of the same Width and depth and they have a common lateral axis which intersects the center of bore [2. This lateral axis of recesses it and I7 is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of recesses 44 and [5. The formation of the cut-out I3 is optional, and this cutout is omitted if prong ll of-the pull member 8 is omitted.
Said top wall 2 is also provided at its top face with an integral raised stop 2c which is positioned laterally outwardly and longitudinally rearwardly of recess ll.
Bottom wall i has a recess E9 in its lower face which communicates with a through-and-through hole 2i of reduced diameter in said bottom wall i.
In order to assemble the parts, the cylindrical 6 is extended through the opening 226 in washer until said washer 25 is proximate to the lower face of head ii. The lugs it are interfitted with the slots 2'1, and cylindrical shank 6 is inserted through a hole E2 of wall 2 until the lower end face of said shank 6 abuts the top face of bottom wall i. As a result of this assembly, the axis of pin P is substantially transverse to bottom wall l. Preferably, head 1a will be spun with sufficient force so that the lower end face of shank 5 will be held against bottom wall i sufiiciently tightly to prevent pin P from turning about its axis relative to said bottom wall I. However, this invention includes a method of forming head la in which pin P is turnable with respect to bottom wall i. The operation of the slide is substantially the same whether or not pin P is turnable with respect to bottom wall Pin P is substantially prevented from moving transversely with respect to bottom wall l, as the result of the forming of shank extension head la. Shank 5 sufficiently clears the peripheral edge of hole I2 to permit walls l and 2 to move between their selected clearance or release positions of Pig. 3 and their selected proximate positions of Fig. 4 and other views.
Pin head i is transversely spaced above top wall 2. Washer 25 is turnable about the axis of Said reduced exten- 4 shank 6 and is also transversely slidable between head 4 and wall 2. The head i is sufficiently close to top wall 2 in the assembled device, so that the pull member 8 is maintained assembled with washer 25.
The lugs It! of pull member 8 are freely movable within the slots 2? of washer 25. Therefore, pull member 8 is turnable relative to pin P about a pivot axis which is the common axis of lugs i9 and which is perpendicular to the axis of pin P. Lugs III are thicker than the transversely movable washer 25 in any turned position of said pull member 8 about said common pivot axis of lugs H3, so that the fiexure of yoke 3 upon the slide walls I and 2 causes said walls to spread apart until top wall 2 strikes lugs 10, said lugs l0 being held against the bottom face of head 4.
When pull member 8 and washer 25 are turned until the pivot axis of lugs H3 is laterally disposed, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5-7, the lugs it are partially located in the lateral recesses 16 and H, and the optional prong H is alined with the optional opening or cutout H3. One lug It then abuts the stop 20. The lugs it] then cooperate with recesses or indentations i6 and I! to keep the longitudinal walls i and 2 in selected proximate positions in which said walls are preferably parallel to each other. This is the normal relationship of said walls l and 2.
The slide then operates in the usual manner. When the slide is moved longitudinally rearwardly in the locking direction, said slide interlocks the two rows of hookless fasteners. When the slide is moved longitudinally forwardly in the unlocking direction, the shank ll of pin P disengages the hookless fasteners.
When a jam or obstruction occurs, the pull member 8 is turned from its horizontal position of Fig. 1 to a vertical position, and said pull member 8 and the washer 25 are turned in unison clockwise through an angle of until one lug i0 is alined with the shallow rear recess l4, and the other lug it is alined with the deep front recess 15. The pivot axis of pull member Bis then longitudinally disposed.
The resilient rear yoke 3 then springs the walls away from each other, from their selected proximate positions of Figs. 1 and 3, to their selected separated or release positions of Fig. 4.
When the walls I and 2 are in their separated positions of Fig. 4, the flanges F and Fa may clear the hookless fasteners. In such case, the slide may be moved longitudinally rearwardly relative to the hookless fasteners, without interlocking the hookless fasteners. However, it is preferred that the flanges F and Fa should not be moved out of engagement with the hookless fasteners when said walls I and 2 are in their selected separated positions. In such. case, the flanges Pa will still interlock the hookless fasteners when the slide is moved longitudinally rearwardly in the locking direction.
However, when the walls I and 2 are in said separated positions, the slide can be moved for Wardly in the longitudinal unlocking direction. The walls I and 2 are sufficiently spaced apart so that the shank 6 of pin P can then disengage the hookless fasteners, even if there is a jam or obstruction forwardly of shank 5.
If the prong I! and cut-out 18 are used, and the pull member 8 is moved to its horizontal position of Fig.1, said prong l I is passed through cut-out I8 to engage a hookless fastener or the fabric between adjacent hookless fasteners or any part of the fabric of the garment or other article, to hold the slide against longitudinal movement.
In order to limit the movement of walls I and 2 toward each other when the pull member is disposed as shown in Fig. l, the slide is provided with longitudinal tongues 2-2 at each longitudinal edge thereof. Said tongues 22 are integral with yoke 3 and said tongues 22 are located longitudinally between walls l and 2; adjacent the longitudinal edges of said Walls.
The pull member 8 operates as a controlmember and it need not necessarily be a pull member.
An economy in manufacture and assembly, as compared with my 'above mentioned prior application, Serial No. 130,409, is obtained by utilizing the above de'scribed construction. In said prior application, it was necessary to spin or otherwise form the head la very carefully, in A order to make certain that pin P would be turnable with respect to bottom wall I. in addition, it was diihcult to form the grooves in the bottom face of head 4 sufficiently precisely to ensure that the lugs Ill would maintain the walls 1 and 2 in the proper selected proximate positions and the proper selected clearance positions, depending upon the positions of-lugs Hi, so that the desired tension on the hookless fasteners would be maintained in each of said positions.
In the present application, head Tc need not be formed with such precision, since it is merely necessary that pin P should be-substantially pre vented from moving transversely with respect to bottom wall I, and it does not matter whether or not pin P is turnable with respect to said wall i. In addition, it is relatively easy to form the cylindrical shank 6 and the cylindrical head 4 of pin P and the lugs ID with precision, and it is the dimensions of these parts which primarily determine the proper operation of the slide. Since washer may be formed by 'a simple operationysuch as stamping or the like, the expense and difiicdlty of "forming with precision grooves in the bottom 'face of head 4 is J eliminated.
I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention but numerous changes and ornissions and substitutions and additions can be made without departing from the scope of my invention.

I claim:
1. A slide -having Y-sha-nod channels for engaging -and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls whoserear ends are connectedby a rear transverse resilient yoke'which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separatedpositions,'"a'pin which is connected to said bottom wall and which 'extends through a'hole in said top wall, pin having an enlargedhead which is located above said top wall, a washer having a central opening through whichsaidpin extends, saidwash'er being turnable about the axis of saidpin'and being located between said head andsaid *top wall, said washer having-diametrically opposed cutouts which extend inwardly from its outer rim, and a turnable member which has lugs which are thicker than the heightof saidwasher andwhich iii are respectively located within respective cutouts, said lugs being turnable relative to said washer about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to said pin, said pin being located and operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, said lugs and the top face of said top wall being co" operatively shaped so that said lugs are adapted to abut said top face and to hold said walls in selected proximate positions when said pivot axis is laterally disposed, and to permit said walls to move to said selected separated positions when said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed, said walls bein closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said selected separated positions.
2. A slide having Y shaped channels for engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls whose rear ends are connected by a rear transverse resilient yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, a transverse pin which is connected to said bottom wall and which extends transversely through a hole in said top wall, said 'pin having an enlarged head which is located above said top wall, a washer having a central opening through which said pin extends, said washer being turnable about the axis of said pin and being located between said head and :said't'op wall, said washer having diametrically opposed cut-outs which extend inwardly from itsouter rim, anda turnable member which has lugs which -are thicker than the height of said washer and which are respectively located within respective tout-outs, said lugs being turnable relative to said washer about a pivot axis'which is perpendicular tosaid pin, said pin being located-and operative .toseparate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally .forwardly, the top face of said top wall having lateral recesses on opposite sides of said hole and havi'ng longitudinal reoesseson opposite sides of said-hole, said lugs and said lateral recesses :being shaped to .hold said wallsin selected proximate positions when said lugs are located in said lateralrecesses, said lugs and said longitudinal recesses lbeingshaped to permit said yoke to move said walls to said selected transversepositions'when said lugs. are in said longitudinal recesses,:said walls being transversely closer to each other in said selected proximate positions thanin said selected transverse positions.
3. A slide havingY-shapedchannelsfor engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, 'said'slide having'longitudinal top and bottom walls whose rear ends are connected by a rear transverse resilient yoke which biases said 'wallstransversely away from each other to selected separatedpositions, bottom wall having a thro-ugh-and-through transverse opening-which has a lower portion of increased diameter, a pin which has a shank which extends transversely through a hole in said top wall and whose lower end abuts the upper face of said bottom wa1l,said shankhavinga depending extension which extends through said opening in said bottomwalhsaid extension hav ing at its lower end-an enlargedl'head-w-hichis located within said lower portionof said opening and'which abuts-thesupper end of said' lower portion of said OpGIl'lI lg SO- aS substantiallvto prevent transversemovement- 0f said pin relative toisaidloottom wall, said=shank havingat its is perpendicular to said shank, said shank being located and operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, said lugs and the top face of said top wall being co-operatively shaped so that said lugs are adapted to abut said top face and to hold said walls in selected proximate positions when said pivot axis is laterally disposed, and to permit said walls to move to said selected separated positions when said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed, said walls being closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said selected positions.
4. A slide having Y-shaped channels for engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls whose rear ends are connected by a rear transverse resilient yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, said bottom wall having a through-and-through transverse opening which has a lower portion of increased diameter, a pin which has a shank which extends transversely through a hole in said top wall and whose lower end abuts the upper face of said bottom wall, said shank having a depending extension which extends through said opening in said bottom wall, said extension having at its lower end an enlarged head which is located within said lower portion of said opening and which abuts the upper end of said lower portion of said opening and which abuts the upper end of said lower portion of said opening so as substantially to prevent transverse movement of said pin relative to said bottom Wall, said shank having at its upper end an enlarged head which is located above said top wall, a washer having a central opening through which said shank extends, said washer being turnable about the axis of said shank and being located between said head and said top wall, said washer having diametrically opposed cut-outs which extend inwardly from its outer rim, and a turnable member which has lugs which are thicker than the height of said washer and which are respectively located within respective cut-outs, said lugs being turnable relative to said washer about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to said shank, said shank being located and operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, the top face of said top wall having lateral recesses on opposite sides of said hole and having longitudinal recesses on opposite sides of said hole, said lugs beingshaped to partially enter said recesses, said lugs' and said lateral recesses being shaped to hold said walls in selected proximate positions when said lugs are located in said lateral recesses, said lugs and said longitudinal recesses being shaped to permit said yoke to move said walls to said selected transverse positions when said lugs are in a said longitudinal recesses, said walls being transversely closer to each other in said selected prox- 8, imate positions than in said selected transverse positions.
5. A slide having Y-shaped channels for engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls whose rear ends are connected by a rear transverse resilient yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, a pin which has a shank which extends transversely through a hole in said top wall and whose lower end abuts the upper face of said botom wall, means securing said shank to said bottom wall, said shank having at its upper end an enlarged head which is located above said top wall, a washer having a central opening through which said shank extends, said washer being turnable about the axis of said shank and being located between said head and said top wall, said washer having diametrically opposed cut-outs which extend inwardly from its outer rim, and a turnable member which has lugs which are thicker than the height of said washer and which are respectively located within respective cut-outs, said lugs being turnable relative to said washer about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to said shank, said shank .being located and operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, said lugs and the top face of said top wall being co-operatively shaped so that said lugs are adapted to abut said top face and to hold said walls in selected proximate positions when said pivot axis is laterally disposed, and to permit said walls to move to said selected separated positions when said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed, said walls being closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said separated positions.
6. A slide having Y-shaped channels for engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls whose rear ends are connected by a rear transverse resilient yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, a pin which has a shank which extends transversely through a hole in said top wall and whose lower end abuts the upper face of said bottom wall, means securing said shank to said bottom wall, said shank having at its upper end an enlarged head which is located above said top wall, a washer having a central opening through which said shank extends, said washer being turnable about the axis of said shank and being located between said head and said top wall, said washer having diametrically opposed cut-outs which extend inwardly from its outer rim, and a turnable member which has lugs which are thicker than the height of said washer and which are respectively located within respective cut-outs, said lugs being turnable relative to said washer about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to said shank, said shank being locatedand operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, the top face of said top wall having lateral recesses on opposite sides of said hole and having longitudinal recesses on opposite sides of said hole, said lugs being shaped to partially enter said recesses, said lugs and said lateral recesses being shaped to hold said walls in selected proximate positions when said lugs are located in said lateral recesses, said lugs and said longitudinal recesses being shaped to permit said yoke to move said walls to said selected transverse positions when said lugs are in said longitudinal recesses, said walls being transversely closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said selected transverse positions.
7. A slide having Y-shaped channels for engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls, said walls having front and rear ends, said rear ends being integral with a resilient rear transverse yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, holding means comprising a pin member, means mounting said pin on the bottom wall of said slide, said pin extending through an opening in the top wall of said slide, said holding means being located and operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, a turnable member, and means mounting said turnable member on said so that it is turnable relative to said pin about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to the axis of said pin, and so that it is also turnable about the axis of said pin, said turnable member having cam means and said cam means and the top face of said top wall being co-operatively shaped so that said lugs are adapted to abut said top face and to hold said walls in selected proximate positions when said pivot axis is laterally disposed, and to permit said walls to move to said selected separated positions when said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed, said walls being closer to each other in said elected proximate positions than in said selected separated positions.
8. A slide having Y-shaped channels for engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls, said walls having front and rear ends, said rear ends being integral with a resilient rear transverse yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated posiitons, holding means comprising a pin member, means mounting said pin on the bottom wall of said slide, said pin extending through an opening in the top wall of said slide, said holding means being located and operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, said pin having an enlarged head located above said top wall, a turnable member which has a pair of opposed cam lug members and mounting means for retaining said lugs between said head and said top wall with the common axis of said lugs extending perpendicularly to the axis of said pin, said lugs being turnable about said axis and being also turnable about the axis of said pin, said cam lugs and the top face of said top wall being co-operatively shaped so that said lugs are adapted to abut said top face and to hold said walls in selected proximate positions when said common axis is laterally disposed, and to permit said walls to move to said selected separated positions when said common axis is longitudinally disposed, said walls being closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said selected separated positions.
