This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ladies handbags or the like.
More specically, the present invention proposes the formation of a ladys handbag having an outer perimetral shell engaged xedly in posi- As a further object of the present invention, it is proposed to position the inner body member within the outer perimetral shell so that it funcopposed pivotal iiap portions for independentlyY shell. The ladys handbag, according to the first form of the present invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 9, includes a perimetral outer shell 20. The outer shell 20 is formed of an elongated strip of material 2| that has its top and bottom longitudinal edges bound by strips of resinous plastic I'he'strips of resinous plastic material 22 are secured in position by lines of stitches 23.

Thus, the blank from which the inner body member 24 is shaped is substantially of cruciform outline. The Walls 26 of the inner body member are arranged to be folded upward along the lines 21 shown in Fig. 8 so that the end edges of the Walls 25 are brought into contact with one another forming substantially an open topped The blank from which the outer perimetral wall 2B is formed is of a length corresponding to the periphery o the central wall 25 of the inner body member 24. The outer perimetral Wall 23 is designed to be folded vertically along the lines 28, shown in Fig. 7, to be engaged about the outer faces of the opstanding Walls 25 of the inner body member 24 to provide a front wall 2S, end walls 36 and adjacent rear Wall portions 3i. The end edges of the blank used ior forming the outer perimetral Wall 20, which denne the inner edges of the rear Wall portions 3l are brought into adjacency when the outer perimetral Wall 1s Wrapped about the inner body member 24.
The inner body member 24 is positioned vwithin the outer perimetral shell With the bottom face of its central Wall 25 iiush with the bottom edges of the perimetral outer shell so that the central Wall 25 functions as a bottom wall for the handbag. The walls 26 are of a height to have their top edges located immediately below the bottom edge of the inner portion of the upper strip of binding material 22, see Fig. e. That arrangement oi the inner body member 24 within the outer shell 20 leaves at least one side-the top sideoi the handbag open.
A closure flap 32 is provided for closing the open top side of the handbag. is formed of a piece oi rigid but bendable material 33, bounded on its four sides by a strip oi resinous plastic material 34 secured in position by lines of stitches 35.
The closure flap 32 is folded in hal horizontally along the line 36 shown in Fig. 9, to provide a top flap portion 31 and depending portion 38. With the flap portion 31 positioned to close the open top side of the handbag, the depending portion 38 is depended along the outer faces of the rear flap portion 3i of the outer perimetral shell 20. The depending portion 38 is secured in position by means of rivets 39 which are passed through the depending portion, the rear wall portions 3l and the adjacent Wall 23 of the inner J' body member 24. The rivets 3! are located at the four corners of the depending portion 3S on opposite sides of the adjacent end edges of the blank from which the outer perimetral Wall is formed. The locations of the rivets 33 function to hold the end edges in adjacency and further maintain the outer perimetral Wall 2t in position about the Walls 26 of the inner body member 24. With the rivets 39 passing through the adjacent Wall 26 of the inner body member, the inner body 'i' member 24 is retained against dropping out of the bottom of the outer perimetral Wall 2%.
Means is provided for retaining the flap portion 31 in its position closing the open top of the handbag. The nap portion retaining means comprises an elongated tab 4% which is extended vertically along the outer face of the iront wall 29 oi the outer perimetral shell 2E. One end oi the tab 40 is secured to the front wall 29 by spaced rivets 4l, which pass through the iront Wall 21";
and the adjacent Wall 26 of the inner body member 24. Thus, the rivets 4l function in conjunction with the rivets 39. to support the inner body member 24 against dropping out of the bottom of the outer perimetral shell 2D.
The closure flap 32 The free end of the tab 43 is provided for extension partially across the top face of the nap portion 31 at its free front edge.
That free end oi the tab 4t is provided with a snap fastener element 42 for engagement with a complementary snap fastener element 43 mounted through the ilap portion 31. W hen the snap fasteners 42 and 43 are engaged, as shown in 1Eig. l, the ilap portion 31 will be retained in its closed position.
Mounted at spaced positions on the top face of the ilap portion 31 oi the closure flap 32, there are inverted U-shaped members d between which a handle 43 is extended so that the handbag can be conveniently carried when the top nap portion 31 is retained in its closed position by the engaged fastener elements.
Extended along the inner face of the top nap portion 31, there is an elongated piece of resinous plastic material 45 which has its end edges inserted beneath the strip of binding material 34 oi the closure flap and secured in position by the lines of stitches 35. Thus, the piece of resinous plastic material 45 provides a pocket on the inner face of the flap portion 31 for a mirror 4B. The piece of resinous plastic material 45 is formed intermediate of its ends with spaced slits 'l1 for mounting a comb 48.
The strip of material 2l of the outer shell 20, the main portion of the blank used for forming the inner body member 24 and the piece oi material 33 of the closure flap 32 are all ormed of the same material. rlhose parts can be formed of suitable rigid but bendable resinous plastic materials. On the other hand, those parts can be made of a rigid cardboard material which has its outer face covered by a sheet oi resinous plastic material adhesively secured thereto.
The present disclosure is not intended to be limited in any Way to the speciiic use of any particular material for forming the three main parts of the handbag.
Referring specifically to Fig. 6, it will be noted that the vertical end edges oi the walls 2E of the inner body member 24 which are ree of any connection to the outer shell 23 are located outside of the end edges of the walls 2S which are held in position by the rivets 33 and ai. By that arrangement those ree Walls 2 or the inner body member are retained in position against the inner faces o the end Walls 33 oi the outer perimetral shell 2t.
ln the modification of the invention illustrated in Figs. l0 to l5, the outer perimetral shell 20 is Wrapped vertically about the inner body member 24' to have a top Wall 29', end Walls 36 and bottom vvall portions 3i. The bottom wall portions 3i' have adjacent end edges contacting one another beneath the inner body member 24.
rEhe inner body member 24 is positioned within the outer perimetral shell 2B' with its central .vall 25 located centrally of the width oi the outer shell 2t to form a partition dividing the interior oi the outer shell into separate compartments and 5l located on opposite sides of the central wall 25' of the inner body member 24'. Entrance to the compartments '53 and 5i is by Way of the adiacent open sides of the outer shell 23'.
The closure flap 32' has an intermediate portion 33' extended across and secured to the bottom face of the bottom Wall portions 3 I by means or" rivets 39. Certain of the rivets 33', as best shown in Fig. 13, pass through the adjacent walls 26 of the inner body member 24 to retain the inner body member xedly in position within the outer shell 20'.

Elongated tabs 40 are xedly attached tothe top wall 29 of the outer perimetral shell 20 by means of rivets 4|. One of the rivets 4l', see

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
