Description

Patented Feb. 6, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,189,410 comma Henry O. Stute, St. Louis, Mo., minor to Gaylord Container Corporation, St. Louis, Mo., a
Claims.
This invention relates to containers, particularly to fiber board containers of the kind comprising a tray and a confining sleeve for the sides thereof. The principal object of the invention is a strong, simple and economical container of the above type which will dispense with the separate means heretofore required to prevent the tray from dropping out of the sleeve when handling the container; The invention consists in the container and in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symw bols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the tray member gr section of a container embodying my invenion,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sleeve member or section of said container,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the assembled container,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the corner portions of the container shown in $5 Fig. 3; and- Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a tray of modified form.
The container shown in the accompanying drawing comprising a rectangular member or w tray section A of fiber board or other bendable material and a rectangular sleeve or case B of corrugated board or other bendable material which confines, reinforces and stiffens the sides of said tray. The side walls I and end walls 2 of the tray are bent up from the bottom 3 thereof and are preferably not secured together at the corners of the container; The strip of corrugated board which forms the sleeve has its two ends secured adjacent to one corner of. said sleeve preferably by means of an adhesive strip 4; and
the corrugations of said strip are preferably disposed vertically so as to increase the vertical strength of said sleeve.
One or more of the walls of said tray, preferably the two end walls 2 thereof are made widerthan the tray at the top thereof than at the bottom thereof, whereby said end walls have obliquely disposed upwardly diverging side edges 5 that are disposed outwardly of the side walls of said 50 tray at each corner'thereof and bite or wedge into the adjacent corners of the corrugated confining sleeve and thus prevent the tray from slipping downwardly through said sleeve under the weight of the contents or the tray. The side walls I of u the trayare disposed in abutting relation to the wedge-shaped end walls 2 thereofand thus prevent said end walls froimswinging inwardly. Inward swinging movement or the side walls of the tray is prevented by its contents, such for instance, as cheese molded in place within the tray. The container may be provided with any suitable cover (not shown) The tray shown in Fig. 5' is similar to the tray shown in Fig. 2, except that the side edges 5a of each end wall 2a of the tray of Fig. 5 are disposed parallel to each other, the frictional engagement of said edges with the corrugated sleeve from top to bottom thereof being suiiicient to prevent the tray from falling through said sleeve.
The hereinbefore described container has severa] important advantages. It is simple and inexpensive and can be quickly and easily assembled. The tray is held within the sleeve without the aid of separate fastening means; and-the sleeve serves to protect the tray, prevents spread- 2 ing thereof and permits stacking of. the packed containers without danger of crushing. a
What I claim is:
1. A container comprising a multi-cornered tray and a confining sleeve for the side walls thereof, said tray and said sleeve having vertical side walls, one of the side walls of said tray extending across and beyond the ends of the two adjacent side walls and having downwardly converging side edges, whereby said wall is adapted to be wedged edgewise into said sleeve.
2. A container comprising a multi-cornered tray and a corrugated board confining sleeve for the side walls thereof said tray and said sleeve having vertical side walls-and the corrugations of said sleeve being disposed vertically, one of said side walls extending across and beyond the ends of the two side walls adjacent thereto and being shaped to effect an edgewise wedging engagement with said corrugated board sleeve, said sleeve completely covering the comers of. said tray.
3. A container comprising a multi-cornered tray and a similarly shaped corrugated board confining sleeve for the side walls thereof said tray and said sleeve having vertical side walls and the corrugations of said sleeve being disposed vertically, one of said walls having its opposite side edges disposed outwardly of the two adjacent side walls and adapted'and arranged to so frictionally engage said corrugated sleeve, said sleeve completely covering the comers of said tray.
4. A container comprising a rectangular card-, board tray and a rectangular corrugated board sleeve snugly fitting the side walls of said tray and completely covering the corners thereof, said sleeve having vertical side walls, and the corrugations of said sleeve being disposed vertically, two opposite walls of said tray extending across and beyond the adjacent ends of the other two walls thereof into frictional engagement with the adjacent walls of said sleeve.
5. A container comprising a rectangular fiber 10 board tray having side walls bent upwardly from
