UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE LA BAR, or SLATING'DON, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING SLATE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 267,902, dated November 21, 1888.
Application filed February 10, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE LA BAR, of Slatington, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvement in Folding Slates, of which the following is a specification and accompanyin g drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved slate; Fig. 2, a partial perspective view of the open slate; Fig. 3, apartial longitudinal section of the open slate.
The object of my invention is to fasten hinges to reversible slates, so as to render it unnecessary to blemish, perforate, or weaken the frame of the slate by fastening the hinges to slate-frames, as heretofore, to avoid the noise and scratching desks in school-rooms while opening and folding the slates, and in case of removing the hinges at any time to leave the frame in a perfect and unblemished condition, having for its advantages the simple mode of construction, strength, and durability. Other methods that heretofore were usedin fastening hinges to slate-frames are objectionable for the reason that slate-frames are always weakened and blemished thereby.
In the drawings, A is the slate; B, the frame; 0, the web-hinges.
Fig. 3 shows the mode of fastening the web 0 with the slate A in the grooves, thereby substantially securing the webbing while framing the slates.
In Fig. 3, D D show a part of the web fastened with the slate reverse to the other, C O. Thereby four pieces of web form two complete hinges, one near each end of the slate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and thus giving distinctly the required and aggregate movement to the slate (within the thickness of the may be used, long enough to reach around the frames in and under the slates into the grooves of the frames 1) b, and these are fastened at each end with the slate by the pressure of the slate in the groove of the frame, as shown in the drawings, Figs.3, (l G and D D, thereby .making a complete hinge to the slate, and
giving the required articulation to the slates.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of two slate-frames, slates inserted therein, and flexible hinges,- these hinges having their ends secured rigidly in their places in the groove formed in the frame by the edges of the slates, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. As a new article ot'manufacture, a folding slate consisting of two single slates and flexible connecting-pieces secured into the slate-frames by means of the slates themselves, substantially in the manner described.
JESSE LA BAR.
