l UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICEo y WILLIAM H. GOLDING, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,875, dated November 21, 1882,
Application filed April 1,.1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. GOLDING, of
Chelsea, county of Suffolk, and State of Mas to convert a uniform revolution into a reciprocating movement having an interval of rest, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a printing-press having my mechanical movement applied thereto; Fig. 2, a rear view, and Fig. 3 a sideview, of the same, the latter being partially in section; Fig. 4,21. side view, p artially in section, illustrating that period in the revolution of Lthe shaft when the interval of rest occurs; Fig. 5, a side view, partially in section, illustrating a position of the movement which is opposite to that shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 a front view of the movement detached from its connections.
To enable others skilled in the art to make my invention, I will proceed to describe fully the construction of vthe same and the manner `of its operation.
A represents a shaft, suitably supported in any proper bearings, which is adapted in any y proper `manner to receive revolution from any suitable source of power.
a represents a crank formed in the shaft, and B a connecting-rod, by means of which the crank is united toone end of the rockerbeam G, as shown.
The connecting-rod, if desired, may be attached to any proper mechanism to which it is desired to imparta reciprocating movement having intervals of rest.
`The connecting-rod B, it will be observed, equals or nearly equals the crank-arm in length.
The operation is substantially as follows: Revolution having been given to the shaft A in any proper manner, the rocker-beam or other mechanism attached to the outer end of the connecting-rod receives a reciprocating movement having intervals of rest. This interval of rest occurs once in a revolution at the time when the crank a is in its4 highest position, as shown in Fig. 4, and results from the fact that the connecting-rod B equals or nearly equals in length the arm of the crank o. From this` construction it follows that when the crank is approaching or leaving its highest position the center upon which the lower end of the connecting-rod moves is then nearly coincident with the centerof the shaft A, and consequently the rod at this time is simply swung with the crank, instead of being actuated to exert a downward thrust. The exact coincidence of the crank and the connecting-rod in their movement continues only while the two lie in the same vertical plane; but as in approaching and leaving this line the vertical movement of the rod is necessarily small it follows that an appreciable interval of rest is obtained.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The mechanical movement described, consisting of the shaft A, crank a, and connectin g-rod B, the crank and connecting-rod being equal or nearly equal in length, as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 1st day of March, 1882.
WILLIAM E.Y GOLD'ING.
