CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of L etters Patent N0. 267,8 6 8, dated November 21, 1882. Application filed June 24, 1882. ,(NO model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. JoHN ArFRAZIER, a citizen of the'United States, resident at Lilly Chapel, in the county'of Madison and State of .Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, referen ce being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of'reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of my car-coupler. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section view. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the link, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the link.
This invention has relation to devices for coupling cars automatically; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ofthe draw-heads, recessed longitudinallyfrom above downward and provided with a spring-bearing in araised rear portion of the recess the hooked coupling-caps for said draw-heads, having stopshoulders to receive the. links in rear of their hooked ends, said caps being let into the recessed draw-heads and piy oted thereto in front of the spring-bearings; the transverse bearing and brace for the front portion of the couplingcap, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. y
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the drawheads, each of which is longitudinally recessed from the rear abutment orwall, b, forward, the recess opening clear at the front end or mouth of the drawhead. The bottom 0 of the recess is somewhat raised in rear, as at d, and in this raised portion is formed a recessed seat, 0, for the reception of a strong spiral spring, F.
G indicates a cap-plate or coupling-cap, which forms the top of the draw-head between the side walls, H, thereof, said cap being let in between said side walls, so as to be flush with their upper edges. A transverse pivotbolt, k, arranged'a short distance in front of the spring F, serves to connect the cap-plate to the bearings lin the side walls, H, ofthe draw-head. The front part of the cap G is formed with a coupling-hook on its under side,
| having a convex rounded bearing, as indicated at m, and in rear of this hook is formed, also onthe under side of the cap, an abutmentshoulder, a, of sufficient depth to engage the nose or beveled end of the coupling-hook P when the latter is inserted in the mouth of the draw-head.
In the forward portion of the draw-head, under the cap, and engaging the shoulder at thereof in the angle thereof, is a bearing and draft-brace, R, which may be in the form of a transverse bolt, as shown in the drawings. This brace-bearing serves to form a rest for the couplingcap, and also to take the strain of the draft in great measure off the pivot-bolt k by its engagement with the shoulder n of said cap. Y
Through the top and bottom of each drawhead are usually provided the perforations s, for the reception of a couplingpin to be used with the ordinary loop-link in coupling with cars provided only therewith; or the couplinghook P, which is formed with the upwardlyturned hooks 2 on its ends, may be made with slots t to receive vertical coupling-pins. The coupling-hook P is formed without lateral wings or projections, and is designed to engage the hook ends m of the coupling-caps G,
and its hooks z are made with rounded convex bearings, to swing easily from side to side when engaged with the cap-hooks. Flexnre of the coupling devices is thus provided for. The width of the hooked coupling-bar P is designed to be as great as its depth at the hooked end and greater than its depth in the shank, so that if a car should jump the track and turn as much as the quarter of a circle an uncoupling will automatically result.
A lever, 1 can readilybe connected to-the top of the cap, as indicated in the drawings, and pivoted to a bearing, 20, of the frame of the car, so as to extend laterally outward and form a handle, whereby the hook end of the cap-plate can be raised to enable the couplinghook to be withdrawn; and to the lever v or directly to the cap-plate an operating-rod, may be extended upward in hearings to the platform or top of the car to enable the capplate to be operated therefrom.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
