Description

May 11, 1954 A. R. JAIN rs1-AL STOVE HANDLE Filed July 7, 1951 .uw ulanr Patented May 1l, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STOVE HANDLE Alva R. Jain and Frank Merrell Spence, Galveston,
Ind., assignors to Globe American Corporation, Kokomo, Ind., a corporation Application July 7,
1951, Serial N0. 235,642
2 Claims. (Cl. 16-111) elongated bar handle and the mounting bracketsv therefor all of stamped sheet metal, and wherein cylindrical metal bar.
More particularly, the invention resides in the structure formed of sheet metal and assembled which enables a bar handle of this character, including its mounting brackets, to be produced in a more economical and facile manner than heretofore.
The invention is accomplished, in general, by rolling an elongated sheet metal piece about its edges to form an arcuate cross section with rolled in groove forming inner edges, forming a pair of bracket members of stamped sheet metal adapted to slide or telescope into the bar from each end in an interlocking relation with the inturned edges, each of said brackets being formed with a bent up end to about the open ends of the formed bar and simulate a solid bar construction.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
Fig. l is a front elevation of a stove illustrating the mounting of the handle thereon,
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the bar handle showing one of the brackets telescoping at the left end thereof with a portion of the bar broken away, and the pre-formed bracket and end closure separated therefrom in position to be telescoped into the opposite end thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l with a portion thereof broken away.
As illustrative of the invention there is shown in the drawings a gas range Il! having the usual back panel I I extending upwardly from the cooking surface l2. Below the cooking surface the stove is provided with one or more compartments which may include an oven, a broiler, and perhaps a utensil compartment. As shown in Fig. 1 there are three of such compartments, each having a hinged door i3, I4 and I5, respectively. Secured on each door there is provided an elongated bar handle I6l for grasping to open and close the door in the usual manner. The bar handle i6 is formed of sheet metal having an exposed curved the stove of a solid bar of metal. The rolled in edges provide locking grooves I9 open at opposite ends of the bar for telescopically receiving therein the mounting brackets in the manner illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
There is provided such a mounting bracket to be telescopically received at opposite ends of the bar, each of the said brackets, together with the corresponding end closure, being formed of stamped sheet metal. One of the bracket clo- 4Stamped from one end of the base plate 29 there is formed an enclosure cap 2| which is slightly dished and of an oval shape, likewise conforming to the cross form an opening indicated at 24 to receive a stove bolt 25 for securing said bracket directly to the outer surface of the compartment door I3, as shown in Fig. 3,
The bracket 22 is secured by welding or the like to its base plate 20 through the medium of a pair of inwardly-extending wing mountings 23a lying across the inner end of the bracket in abutting relation for mounting support of the bracket on the base plate.
After the bar It is formed with the desired cross sectional curvature and the rolled in edges, the pre-formed mounting units, including the base plate 20, bracket 22 and end closure cap 2| is telescoped into the opposite ends of the bar, respectively, so that the base plate iirmly interlocks with the locking grooves I9 formed by the rolled in edges I3, and with the end closure cap seating snugly into abutting relation with the open ends of the bar. With this assembly the sheet metal bar and mounting brackets may be readily secured to the compartment door in such relative position on the stove as to give the visual appearance of a solid bar handle.
The invention claimed is:
l. A stove handle for mounting on a compart ment door of a, stove comprising an elongated sheet metal bar curved in cross section to provide rearwardly and inwardly extending rolled-in edges to provide opposed elongated locking grooves, a pair of sheet metal units for mounting said bar on the door, each of said units including a sheet metal base plate conforming to said curvature of the bar and interlocking with said locking, groovesyonergend of said fbase plate extendinglaterally therefrom adjacentY the end-of said bar to provide an end closure cap therefor, a bracket secured to each base plate to extend outwardly therefrom formed of sheet metaloffiriverted U-shape in cross section terminating'in inwardly extending wing portions `to :provide end members therefor, one ofrsaid?en'dfrnembers'rbeing rigidly secured to said base plate andthe other end member being formed Withan-aperture. therein for receiving a stove bolt for locking it in abutting relation against the surface of thedoor-With said bar extending spacedrelationthereto for hand gripping.
.2. :Astove v handle for mounting onf a compartment door of a stove comprising an elongated ,-Sheehmetallbarcurvedin cross section to rpro- Avide, rearwardly and inwardlyextendingrolled-in provide opposed elongated locking yfgrooves, a pair'of sheet metal units formounting saidfrbar-on the door, each of `said units inelud- 'kingra sheetmetal base plate conforming to the transversely of the door in inner curvature and of a dimension to t snugly Within the inner surface of said bar for telesoopically sliding into the opposite open ends of said bar with the opposed edges embraced and interlocked by said locking grooves, one end of each plate having an end closure cap extending laterally therefrom with edges curved to conform with thegrolle'dfin edges of sai'dzbar and provide Ian Pend 'closure "therefor, a rsupporting bracket secured to and extending outwardly from the base plate of each said unit having an aperture formed rtherein,
and a locking bolt extending through said aperture for securing the ends of the respective brackets :in :abutting relation against the i' "surface ofthedoor-with said bar extending transverselyxi'thedoor in spaced relation thereto for y:hand gripping.
