To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, LEMUEL BANNISTER, of Pl'iiladelphia, Philadelphia county, State ot' Pennsylvania. have invented certain Improvements in Grates, of which the following is the specification.

My invention relates to that class of fnrneces, stoves, grates,'&c., where the grate-bars are rocked for the purpose of cleaningor raking the fue; and my invention consists in constructing the bedplate of the furnace or grate so as to permit the rocking appliances to be applied to stoves of ordinary construction, yet conceal the same, avoid the distorting of the frame or casing of the stove, and cheapen the manufacture, as fully described hereinafter.

It is common in some classesof grates to use rocking bars and appliances connected to the ends of the bars, whereby all may be rotated in unison to rake the fire. As heretofore constructed these appliances, when applied to a stove, are exposed, in many instances detracting from the nish of the article, sometimes presentingprojections upon which the clothing can catch, and any attempt to conceal them as constructed would necessarily distort the casing. i A

My invention consists in so arranging the rocking devices and in so constructing the frame or base of the stove or other articles that such devices shall be mainly below the level of the gratebars and wholly concealed, without interfering in the least-with the operation of the rocker-lever or altering the form plate, B, and vertical face-1' late,which'conceal the arms and cover the raking appliances, as shown.

To permitof the use of the raker-lever or other device, I make a slot, s, in the cover-plate at-'any suitable point. For instance, it may be above the usual eye-lugs,fg, as iu Fig. l, the lever being passed through the slot s in the plate B into sai'd sockets and operating as set forth in Letters Patent heretofore granted to G. B. Mershon. Where a lever is used Iprefer to dispense with the c ve-lugsfg shown in Fig. 1, and to make a lever-socket, i, in one of the arms c, as shown in Fig. 3. This construction (which is applicable in most cases where suchrocking devices are used) relluces the cost of manufacture, insures the simultaneous rocking of all the bars, including the centerbar, and preserves the parts all in their relative positions, while in the old construction illustrated in Fig. l the removal of the lever permits the center bar torotate freely while the others are kept in position.

In place of socketing the arm, it may have a projection on the end adapted to a socketin the end of the lever.

After the lever is removed a plate, e, covering an opening in the front plate, may be detached, and the center-bar arm maybe drawn forward to permit the center bar to drop.
