Patented May 4, 1954 SUNSHADE AND EYESHIELD FOR HEADGEAR Max Bigler, New York, N. Y., assignor to Viewmaster Corp., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application December 15, 1950, Serial No. 201,053
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-10) My invention relates to means for attaching an eye shield to the vizor or peak of a cap or the like.
One object is to reinforce the eye-shield.
Another object is to provide means for adjustably hinging an eye-shield to the under side of the vizor of a cap.
Another object is to provide a hinge construction which permits the eye-shield to be folded fiat against the vizor or fiat against the crown of the cap.
Another object is to provide means whereby the eye-shield may be readily moved to operative or inoperative position.
Another object is to provide a construction in which the eye-shield can be easily attached or detached and yet which normally holds the eyeshield securely attached.
Another object is to provide an attachment which can be readily made and at low cost.
In its simple and preferred form the invention employs a form of hinge construction consisting of two coacting U-shaped spring clips one of which is attached to the vizor and the other is riveted to the frame of the eye-shield as shown in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side view of a cap with a vizor and eye-shield attached according to my invention, the shield being shown in full lines in its shielding position and shown in its folded positions in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the combination, with the shield folded beneath the edge of the vizor of the cap.
Fig. 3 is a similar view but with the shield folded beneath the edge of the crown.
Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the anchor clips and showing a fragment of the vizor to which it is attached in section and on a greatly enlarged scale.
Fig. 5 is a side view of a hanger and showing in section a fragment of the eye-shield to which it is secured.
Fig. 6 is a side view of connected clips as attached to a section of the vizor.
Fig. 7 is a view of the under side of the connected clips as attached to a fragment of the vizor and shield.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on the plane of line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
The body or crown l of the cap; may be of any suitable material and shape. Usually it willbe formed of flexible material which can be crushed or folded for storage. The vizor 2 may be of any suitable shape and of relatively stiif but flexible material. The eye-shield 3 is formed of a body 4 of transparent material, clear, tinted yellow, green or otherwise and surrounded by a frame 5. of plastic material.
The eye-shield is connected to the vizor by two hinges, each of which has a U-shaped clip 6 secured to the vizor and a complementary hanger clip I secured to the eye-shield.
The clip 6 has a base 8 and two projecting spring jaws 9, 9 spaced apart. This clip is secured to the vizor by an eyelet or a tubular rivet I 0. Each jaw has a central hole or recess l I.
The other clip 1 has an arm l2, one end of which is riveted to the eye-shield 3 by a tubular rivet or eyelet I3 which passes through a hole M in the eye-shield. The frame 5 is clamped between the eyelet head l5 and the finger portion I8 extending perpendicularly from the hanger arm l2 and abutting the frame 5.
It will be noted that the eyelet head I5 is not parallel to the foot ISA thereof but converges theretowards and inwardly of the shield 3 from clamping engagement of the frame 5 and arm I 2 to clamping engagement of the arm and body 4 only as best shown in Figure 5. The shield 3 is thus wedged in the eyelet 13 against any accidental pull as well as having its body 4 pierced by the tubular portion of the eyelet and having its inner border portions confined by the fingers Hi.
The other end of the arm I2 has two spring flanges I1, I! spaced apart and provided with semi-spherical bosses l8, l8 adapted to be sprung between the jaws 9, 9, of clips 6 and which fit rotatably in the holes II in the jaws for hinging the eye-shield to the vizor. The corners l9 of the flanges I! are set inwardly a little so as to facilitate insertion of the hanger flanges between the jaws of clip 6.
It will be noted that clips 6 are rotatable under pressure on the vizor so as to adjust them to accommodate the flanges of the hanger clips 1.
The eye-shield is preferably formed of onepiece of flexible sheet plastic material reinforced by the frame. This frame is U-shaped in cross section and is formed of a strip of plastic softened so that it may be applied around the periphery of the shield and cemented in place with the marginal portion of the body 4 firmly engaged in the bight of the U. The ends 20 of the strip are held together and substantiallly concealed by the head of one of the eyelets of one of the hangers as shown in Fig. 7.
I claim:
In an eyeshield for attachment to the visor of a hat, the combination with a body of sheet mawardly of said body, said head portion further clampingly and wedgingly engaging said frame at the inner margin of said frame.
