UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DARWIN S. WRIGHT, OF MACON, GEORGIA.
MECHANICAL FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,636, dated November 14:, 1882, Y Application filed August 14, 1882. (N0 model.) I
useful Improvement in Mechanical Fans, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for communicating power to a fan, or a number of fans, for thepurpose of cooling the atmosphere in houses; and the invention has for its object to provide a construction which shall be variously adjustable, in order that the fans may be arranged in different positions, according to convenience; and the invention further provides means for the convenient use of fans having tubular stems, such as Japanese fans, which are preferred on account of their lightness.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, showing the application of my invention to use; and Fig. 2 is a detail view.
A represents a crane, which is formed of a bent tube, or of a rod having a tubular end,
and supported in position by means of a bracket, B, upon which its lower end rests, and screw-eyes G O, in which the crane is adapted to turn. The tubular upper end of the crane is provided with set-screws c c for holding the extension-rod D, which is inserted into said tubular end, and this rod is provided with a sleeve, E, having a set-screw for holding the vertically-adjustable rod F, to which the fans are connected. The lower end of the rod F is provided with a bracket, G, in which is journaled the spindle H, having a pulley, I, secured to its upper end, and a hub, J, provided with radial arms K, secured to its lower end. On the arms J, which are cylindrical in form, are placed the tubular stems of the fans L. With this construction the fans may be raised or lowered by the adjustment of the rod F, or moved horizontally by the adjustment of the fans are to be changed from their propellerlike arrangement, which is used when they rotate horizontally, to a position in which they shall coincide with corresponding radial planes. By a lower adjustment of the crane, however, the propeller-like arrangement of the fans may be used to advantage when the fans rotate in a vertical plane.
In fan attachments for sewing-machines, &c., where the position of the person to be fanned is a constant one, a variety of adjustments is unimportant; but in a fan for general use-such as mine-w here the power is to bederived from various sourcessuch as the waterworks of a city, steam attachments, &c.-it is necessary to the practical application of such a fan that it shall be capable of operating in various positions, as convenience may require.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- The combination of the tubular crane, the extension-rod arranged in the tubular crane, and having a sleeve provided with a thumbscrew, the vertical rod arranged in said sleeve and having a bracket for supporting a spindle and pulley, and the hub having radial arms for receiving the fans, substantially as shown and described, whereby the fans may be.
adapted to rotate either in a horizontal or a vertical plane, as set forth.
