CAAEf/YCE ff flan 5 419 Patented Apr. 20, 1954 POWER TAKE-OFF MECHANISM FOR GARBAGE DISPOSAL UNITS Clarence E. Dunbar, Whittier, Calif.
Application January 7, 1952, Serial No. 265,334
2 Claims. (Cl. 241-101) My invention relates to power take-01f mechanisms for garbage disposal units, and included in the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a power take-offmechanism which may be readily and quickly connected to or disconnected from a garbage disposal unit so that the motor of such a unit may be employed to operate other devices, for example, juicers, mixers or the like.
Second, to provide a mechanism of this class which requires no alteration of the conventional garbage disposal unit or thus in any manner interferes with or damages such a unit for its intended purpose.
Third, to provide a mechanism of this class which enables the device operated thereby to be placed over a sink and thus when used to operate a juicer, is particularly convenient for the reason that the waste material may be deposited in the sink for later disposal by the garbage disposal unit.
With the above and other objects in view as may appear hereinafter, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my power take-off mechanism arranged for operating an orange juicer and shown in conjunction with a garbage disposal unit, the garbage disposal unit being shown fragmentarily.
Figure 2 is a partial sectional and partial elevational view showing the glass or container supporting bracket.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through 33 of Figure 1 showing the adapter cover and adjacent portions of the sink.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view through t4 of Figure 1 illustrating the manncr in which the adapter cover operates the switch mechanism of the garbage disposal unit.
A conventional pulverizer or garbage disposal unit involving a housing structure I formed of several parts. Contained within the housing structure is a motor (not shown) having a shaft 3 which extends upwardly and drives a rotor 4. The rotor is provided with impellers 5 which coact with a stationary shredder ring 6. The rotor forms the floor of a pulverizer chamber 1. The upper end of the pulverizer chamber is restricted to form a throat 8 adapted to align with the drain opening of a sink 9. The garbage disposal unit may be held in place by a screw threaded clamp ring H3. The garbage disposal unit may be provided with a switch H mounted at one side of the pulverized chamber and operated by a pin [2 projected into the throat 8.
2 The conventional garbage disposal unit is adapted to receive in its throat a cover provided with cam means for engaging the switch pin.
In the exercise of my invention, I substitute a special cover i3 which insofar as its engagement with the garbage disposal unit is concerned, it is conventional, that is, the cover is provided with a skirt it having cam means it for engagement with the switch pin, and is provided with locking means (not shown) for securing the cover in place. The cover it is provided with a bore therethrough which may be internally screwthreaded to receive a tubular pedestal It. A tubular fitting I? is screwthreaded into the upper end of the pedestal and forms therewith a packing gland It. In the structure shown, the fitting H is provided with a bushing 19 which may be yieldable and arranged to support the bowl 2!! of a juicer. The bowl is provided with a central upwardly extending boss it which fits over the bushing l9. Mounted within the pedestal It by means of bearings 22 and 23 is a drive shaft 24. The drive shaft projects upwardly through the packing gland is and terminates in a polygonal shaped driving tip 25 adapted to receive an orange juicer cone 25. It should be understood, however, that devices other than an orange juicer may be mounted on the pedestal and connected with the upper end of the drive shaft.
The lower end of the drive shaft is provided with a coupling element 2? which may be in the form of a hexagonal socket adapted to fit over a correspondingly shaped head 28 of the shaft 3. The head 28 is a conventional part of the garbage disposal unit.
The pedestal may be provided with a cup or a glass Supporting bracket is suitably secured by a clamp 39 Operation of my power take-01f mechanism is as follows:
The conventional cover for the garbage disposal unit is removed and the special cover it is substituted. In the course of securing the special cover in place, the coupling element 2'! is joined to the drive head 23. The skirt forming part of cover it insures vertical stability of the pedestal it; Vertical stability is aided by the fact that the drive head 28 is a substantial distance below the throat of the garbage disposal unit. By turning the cover it, the switch ll which controls the garbage disposal unit may be set into operation causing the drive shafts 3 and 24 to operate.
If the power take-ofi mechanism is used to oprheld against rotation by the pedestal it while the juicer cone is rotated by the shaft 24.
It will be observed that inasmuch as the juicer is mounted in the sink which contains the garbage disposal unit, any messiness inherent in juicing oranges is limited to the sink and the peelings and pulp may collect in the sink for subsequent disposal through the pulverizing unit.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a garbage dispesal unit set in a sink and having a throat, a pullverizing chamber, a rotor therein and a. drive head projecting above rotor in alignment with said throat, of a power take-off mechanism comprising: a cover for said throat; a tubular pedestal extending upwardly from said cover; a yieldable bushing at the upper end of said pedestal; a packing gland within the upper end of said pedestal; bearings within the top and bottom portions of said pedestal; drive shaft within said pedestal and journalled by said bearings, the lower end or" said drive shaft being engageable with said drive head and up er end of said drive shaft protruding from said packing gland; and a device including a statienary element recessed to fit over and be supperted by said bushing, and a rotatable eleme within said stationary element and operativ I engageable with theprotruding upper end of drive shaft.
2. The combination with a garbage disposal unit set in a sink and having a throat, a pulverizing chamber, a rotor therein and a drive head projecting above said rotor in alignment with said throat, of a power take-off mechanism comprising: a cover for said throat; a tubular pedestal extending upwardly from said cover; a yieldable bushing at the upper end of said pedestal; apacking gland within the upper end of said pedestal; bearings within the top and bottom portions of said pedestal; a drive shaft within said pedestal and journalled by said bearings, the lower end of said drive shaft being engageable with said drive head and the upper end of said drive shaft protruding from said packing gland; a juicer including a bowl having a re-entrant opening adapted to fit said bushing and a discharge spout, a juicer cone within said bowl and operatively associated with said drive shaft; and a laterally directed bracket adjustably mounted on said pedestal for positioning a container under the spout of said juicer bowl.
