1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in serving tools for tightly wrapping a rope or cable with a wire or cord cover.
An important object of the invention is to provide a serving tool adapted for turning about the object to be served and mounting a reel on the tool from which the wrapping is fed onto the objects as the tool is turned, the tool having an adjustable frictional bearing functioning as a brake to hold the wrapping under a desired tension.
Another object is to provide interchangeable inserts for the tool to accommodate objects to be wrapped of various diameter.
A further object is to provide a tool of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on a line 3-3 f Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the work holding head of the tool taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on a line 5--5 of Figure 1 and showing the socket for the reel;
Figures 6 and 7 are perspective views of the interchangeable inserts; and
Figure 8 is an end elevational view of the reel showing the adjustable bearing or brake in open position.
Referring now to the, drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 5 designates the serving tool generally and which comprises a handle 6 having a relatively wide arcuate or semi-cylindrical head i at one end in which is removably secured an insert 8 .by means of set screws 9. The insert 9 is of substantially semi-cylindrical form to fit closely in the head 1 and is formed at its concaved side with a web l0 having a groove II adjacent the outer edge of the head and in which a rope, cable or other object l2 to be wrapped is seated.
The handle 6 is formed rearwardly of head 1 with an opening or socket [3 in which a stem [4 at the base of a reel supporting yoke I5 is held by a transverse pin 16. One arm I! of yoke 15 is formed with an eye or bearing l8 for one end of a shaft I9 01? a reel 20, while the other arm 2| of yoke I5 is constructed with a split bearing 22 including a lower fixed section 23 to one end of which an adjustable bearing section 24 is pivoted on a pin 25. The other ends of bearing sections 23 and 24 are formed with opposed flanges 25 and 27 connected to each other by an adjusting screw 28 to frictionally adjust the hinged bearing section 24 with a drum 29 journalled in the split bearing in a braking action.
The outer edge of head 1 is formed with a guide opening 30 for a wrapping cord or wire 31 wound on reel 20 and by means of which the wrapping cord or wire is fed to the work i2 seated in groove II for wrapping about the work as the tool is turned about the Work.
Split bearing or brake 22 is adjusted to keep the wrapping under a desired tension.
Figure 7 illustrates an interchangeable insert 32 to provide a work holding groove 33 of different diameter for different size objects to be wrapped.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A serving tool of the class described comprising a handle having a work engaging head at one end and provided with a groove in which the work is seated for swinging the tool about the work, said head also including guide means for a Wrapping for the work, said handle having an opening therein rearwardly of the head, a reel supporting yoke having a stem at its base portion secured in the opening of the handle, said yoke also having an adjustable split bearing least at one end portion thereof adapted to rotatably support a reel therein for the wrapping, and means for contracting the bearing to apply a braking action to the reel to adjust the tension of the wrapping.
