ABRAM Q. ALLIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,316, dated November 14, 1882.
Application tiled J une 30, 1882.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM Q. ALLIs, ,a citizen ot' the United States, residing in the city and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Mattresses, ot' which the following is a i'nll and clear specification. i
In the accompanying' drawings, forming part ot this specification, Figure l represents a top view or plan ot' my mattress when extended, and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
The object ot' my invention is to produce a mattress that is capable ot' being tted to any size bedstead and which can be readily transferred from place to place, and one that has all the advantages of similar-constructed mattresses, and yet can be manufactured for less cost.
My invention consists ot' a series of parallel slats both on the top and bottom of the mattress, and having between them the coiled springs ordinarily used. The top slats are connected together by lmeans of jointed arms pivoted tothe slats. The lower slats are connected together by means ofjointed arms the same as the'top one, the jointed arms ot' the bottoni being longer than those of the top.
In the drawings, a designates the parallel slats ofthe bottom, and a the'parallel slats of the top. y
o represents the jointed arms which are pivoted to the bottom slats, and c the jointed arms which are pivoted to the top slats.
e represen ts the coil-springs,which are placed between the top and bottom parallel slats and held in their place by means of rivets or any suitable device.
At each corner of my mattress, to the trst joint ofthe arms whichare secured to the bottom row of slats, is attachetllv one end ot' a curved spring, e', the other end ot' which-is secured to the outside top slat, as hereinafter described.
In constructing a mattress of this description it is preferable to make the jointed arms which are attached to the lower parallel slats longer than thosevwhich are attached to the top slats, so that the curved spring attached to the irst jointed arm, as above described,
(No model.)
will form an acute angle, (see Fig. 1,) and thus act as a brace to prevent any longitudinal movements ot' the slats.
I am aware that spring-mattresses having coiled springs and parallel slats at the bottom with jointed arms have been heretofore patented, as shown in patent to Le Quesne, No. 184,880, where the springs are held together on the top by means of chains or links. This mattress is open to the objection that the springs are free for lateral movement when the mattress is partly compressed, and the springs usually upset and become destroyed, while in my mattress the springs are held in position by being secured t0 the slats both at the top and bottom.
I claim that my mattress is less liable to get out ot' order, owing to its simplicity, and it is more durable and less expensive to make.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A spring-mattress composed of a series of parallel slats, a, forming the bottom, and a like number of parallel slats, a', forming the top, and havingbetween them the coil-springs e, in combination with the jointed arms attached to the top and bottoni row ot' parallel slats, as described and specified.
2. In a spring-mattress, the combination of the parallel slats t and a with the longjointed arms c, attached to the bottom slats, the short jointed arms o', attached to the top slats, the coil-springs c, and the corner-bracing springs e', all as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The slats a and a', in combination with thelong jointed armsat the bottom and shorter jointed arms at the top, the coil-springs e, and the bracing-springs e', having one end secured to the lowerjointed arm and the other end secured to the top outside slat, as described and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in spring-mattresses, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand.
ABRAM Q. ALLIS.
