Claims priority, application Great Britain December 31, 1948 9 Claims.
This invention has reference to windows and is particularly applicable to vehicle windows but maybe applied to the windows of ships and buildings.
The present invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of window which embodies few parts, which parts can be readily assembled to form the window and which will insure a weather tight joint with the panels or bodywork in which the window is fitted. Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of window whereby unsightl features of construction will be effectively concealed.
Various embodiments of the invention as applied to vehicle windows will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the annexed drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of one construction of a window with vertically sliding window pane,
Figure 2 is a sectional plan taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional end elevation taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figures 4 to 8 all show sectional end elevations of further constructions of windows in accordance with the invention,

In the drawings the bodywork of the vehicle is shown formed of an outer and inner panel a and a which carry a fixed frame a this frame form ing the window opening.
Fitted in the window opening, in all constructions shown in the drawings, is an outer or main frame I) having a flange b recessed on its inner face. This recess receives a sunk rubber weathering jointing b which bears on the outer face of the outer panel a of the bodywork and prevents direct contact of the flange with the bodywork.
The outer or main frame is provided with the necessary glass or window moulding receiving channels, guides or the like. In the drawing this frame is shown provided with two webs c, c which, together with the frame, form a channel Further this frame in the construction shown in Figures 1 to is provided with a guide rib d.
In the construction shown in Figures 1 to 3 to which particular reference will now be made, a

The sliding frame is provided with an exterior channel extending along its upper and two vertical sides and in this channel is fitted a felt or like moulding 71,4 recessed to receive the ribs d, the vertical ribs acting as guides or rails when the window is being opened and closed.
Any suitable means may be provided for raising and lowering the sliding frame and also for retaining it in position, such means if desired being carried by the cross member e.

The finisher frame gives a finished effect to the interior of the window and conceals from view the inner face of the outer or mainframe. This surround is shown as being of a deep U formation the limbs of which make a sliding fit on said flange of the finisher frame and a spring Z is housed within the surround to resiliently hold the surround to the outer or main frame. By such provision it is not necessary that the depth of said flange should correspond to the thickness of the bodywork in order to obtain a close joint between the outer or main frame and the finisher frame.
In the window shown in Figure 5 the finisher frame i is provided with an outwardly turned outer flange i which fits within the fixed frame a and abuts against the inner face of the outer panel a, the screws y serving to pull the outer or main frame I) inwards and force the finisher frame outwards.
The lower half of this window has a fixed pane g as in the construction shown in Figure l but the top half is formed by a fixed pane g and the horizontally sliding pane 9 The cross member e in the construction not only forms channels for the reception of the moulding of the upper and lower fixed panes but also a guide rib d which, together with the rib d of the upper side of the outer or main frame, form guide rails for the frame It carrying the sliding window.
In the construction shown in Figure 6 the outer panel aforms a marginal flange projecting beyond the fixed frame a and seated on the fixed frame and abutting against the inner face of the marginal flange is a further frame m having a deep recess in which is inserted a compression spring 12 and in which is fitted the outwardly turned flange i of the finisher frame. The finisher frame, as in the construction shown in Figure 4, is provided with a spring loaded self adlusting surround Z. The spring loading on the surround is considerably lighter than that exerted by the spring n. When the main or outer frame and the inner or finisher frame are drawn together by the screws 7', the spring n is compressed and the flange b caused to exert any desired pressure on the weathering jointing b the lightly loaded surround automatically adjusting itself to form a close joint with the flange 0 By means of the screws the inner or finisher frame can be adjusted with respect to the inner panel of the bodywork. The finisher frame may be provided with a vertical flange i indicated in dotted. lines. When said frame is fitted in position this flange abuts against the inner panel a of the bodywork.
In this. construction there is only a fixed pane, there being no sliding pane so that the outer or main frame is not provided with guide ribs. Further as shown in Figures 9 and 1c the outer or main frame is formed of separate top, bottom and sides which are secured at the corners by means of L plates k accommodated in the channels formed on their outer faces.
Further this frame may be formed of upper and lower half sectional frames likewise secured together by means of plates secured in said channels.
In the construction-shown in Figure 'l the inner or finisher frame i is secured to the fixed frame a by means of screws 0, and the screws 51' introduced through holes in brackets 11 provided with flanges s which bear against the fixed frame 0 the heads of the screws 7 bearing on said brackets.
In the construction shown in Figure 8 the fixed frame a carries spring loaded plungers q which co-operate with a flange r carried by the finisher frame, the end of this flange being of bulbous section as at T The finisher frame also carries a spring loaded surround Z similar to that shown in Figures 4 and 5.
The outer or main frame is secured in position as in the construction shown in Figure 7 and the inner 0r finisher frame is pushed into position until the bulbous end of the flange r overrides the plungers, the plungers then holding said frame in position and the spring loaded surround automatically adjusting itself to make a close fit with the outer, or main frame. It will be noted that no screws are required in this construction to hold the inner or finisher frame in position.
In all the windows described the outer frame is or may be formed of two half sections secured together by plates accommodated in the channels formed in their outer faces. It will be noted that each of the half frames is of one of two construc tions, one construction having guide ribs and the other having none. By selecting and combining the frame sections any of the frames described can be fabricated.
I claim:
1. A window comprising inner and outer panels each having a window opening therein, a fixed window frame sandwiched between the panels, an outer or main flanged frame fitted into the fixed window frame so that its flange overlaps the marginal edge of the opening in the outer panel, said outer frame having at least one channel and window pane fitted therein, a weathering jointing introduced between the flange and said panel, screw means by which the outer frame is drawn into the fixed frame so that its flange and weathering jointing make a weather tight joint with the said marginal edge and a separate inner or finisher frame which extends over and corn ceals the inner face of the outer frame and forms with said face a housing in which window fittings can be accommodated.
2. A window comprising inner and outer panels each having a window opening therein, a fixed window frame sandwiched between the panels, an outer or main flanged frame fitted into the fixed window frame so that its flange overlaps the marginal edge of the opening in the outer panel, said outer frame having at least one channel and window pane fitted therein, a weathering jointing introduced etween the flange and said panel, a separate inner or finisher frame which extends over and conceals the inner face of the main or outer frame and forms with said face a housing in which window fittings can be accommodated, and screw means by which the outer and. inner frames are together so the flange of the outer and weathering jointing maize a weather tight joint with said outer marginal edge.

A window comprising inner and outer panels each having a window opening therein, a fixed window frame sandwiched between the panels, an outer or main flanged frame fitted into the fixed window frame so that its flange overlaps the marginal edge of the opening in the outer panel, said outer frame having at least one channel and window pane fitted therein,- a weathering jointing introduced between the flange and said panel, screw means by which the outer frame is drawn into the fixed frame so that its flange and weathering jointing make weather tight joint with the said marginal edge, a separate inner or finisher frame which extends over and conceals the inner face of the main or outer frame and forms with said face a housing in which window fittings can be accommodated, and a spring loaded self adjusting surround carried by the inner or finisher frame and bearing resiliently 0n the inner face of the outer or main frame to form a close joint therewith.

A window comprising inner and outer panels each having a window opening therein, a fixed window frame sandwiched between the panels, an outer or main flanged frame fitted into the fixed window frame so that its flange overlaps the marginal edge of the opening in the outer panel, said outer frame having at least one channel and window pane fitted therein, a weathering jointing introduced between the flange and said panel, a separate inner or finisher flanged frame which extends over and conceals the inner face of said outer or main frame and forms with said face a housing in which window fittings can be accommodated, its flange then overlapping the inner marginal edge of the opening, and screw means by which outer and inner frames are drawn together so that their flanges make tight joints with the said marginal edges.

A window comprising inner and outer panels each having a window opening therein, a fixed window frame sandwiched between the panels, an outer or main flanged frame fitted into the fixed Window frame so that its flange overlaps the marginal edge of the opening in the outer panel, said outer frame having at least one channel and window pane fitted therein, a weathering jointing introduced between the flange and said panel, an inner or finisher frame which makes a neat fit within said opening and extends over and conceals the inner face of the outer or main frame and forms with said face a housing in which window fittings can be accommodated, and screw means whereby said outer and finisher frames are drawn together.

A Window comprising inner and outer panels each having a window opening therein, a fixed window frame sandwiched between the panels, an outer or main flanged frame fitted into the fixed window frame so that its flange overlaps the marginal edge of the opening in the outer panel, said outer frame having at least one channel and window pane fitted therein, a weathering jointing introduced between the flange and said panel, a further frame provided with a deep recess, which frame surrounds the outer or main frame, an inner or finisher frame which extends over and conceals the inner face of the main or outer frame and forms with said face a housing in which window fittings can be accommodated and which inner frame is provided with a flange which fits into the aforesaid recess, spring means fitted in said recess and screw means whereby the outer and the inner frames are drawn together against the action of the said resilient means.

A window as claimed in claim 6 wherein the inner or finisher frame is p vi e w th a Sprin loaded self adjusting surround which bears resiliently on the inner face of the outer or main frame to form a close joint therewith, the spring loading of the surround being less than the spring loading exerted on the flange of the inner or finisher frame which fits into the recess.
8. A window as claimed in claim 1 wherein the inner or finisher frame is removably secured in position by resilient retaining means.
9. A window as claimed in claim 1 wherein the outer or main frame is formed of sections having channels on their outer faces and which sections are secured together to form the frame by connecting plates accommodated in the channels.
